I used to think going to a gym was boring, but if you bring along an iPod or a friend it can become fun. Just imagine you are hanging out with your friends or listening to music, but you just happen to be lifting weights or using machines at the same time.

If you think of it more as another event (listening to music) with some exercise thrown in, it makes it easier. I hope that makes sense.

One other thing I forgot to mention. There were also a helicopter and airplane flying overhead. They loaded each up with some wireless gear and flew around Seattle trying to set up an air-to-air or air-to-ground link. Everytime a helicopter or airplane flew by everyone would be like, "Is that it!?" In the end, I think we did identify which ones were ours. However, I didn't hear the results of this test.

Hello all. I attended the demonstration at the Alki site. I'll try and give a basic description of what it was like.

We used a 18(?) dbi Yagi to connect to someone in the Columbia tower (the big black building, the tallest in Seattle). We also used a 24 dbi parabolic to connect to the Magnolia site. First we got internet working by relaying through a guys office in the tower. I got over 250 kB/s at some points. It took us a while longer, but we eventually got the connection to Magnolia working. Actually, Ken Caruso did most of the work fixing the Soekris box on the Magnolia end (it was configured for a different network). We had a little bit of problems with the DNS for the internet access, but that was eventually fixed. We were all able to get into an IRC room and use iChat, but we weren't successful on getting iChat AV to work across the main link. I think it may have to do with the fact that all the computers were behind a NAT to the internet. Rendezvous, unfortunately, didn't work across the link because we were routing.

It was actually a sight to see. We had solar panels, batteries, a generator, lots of tables, tons of cables, video cameras, still cameras, cell phones with cameras, FRS radios, etc. Actually, you can see it. I have pictures on my website:

Actually, hehe, I don't really know much about .htaccess files. If you could give me a few lines to put in my .htaccess file that would use mod_rewrite (or something) to send them to, say, aol.html, then that would be great. I would create a page explaining the actions of AOL.

  16. AOL wants to seperate from the internet, lets help on AOL Blocks Links from LiveJournal · · Score: 2, Funny

I just blocked all AOL users from accessing my website. I am considering blocking incoming mail from AOL users, but I have to talk it over with my users first. If AOL will block internet hosts willy-nilly (they blocked me because I'm on a dynamic connection), then I might as well block them too.

  18. thank you for purchasing the rock concert manual on Perfect Pitch for Those Without It · · Score: 2, Interesting

Blue Man Group's rock concert "The Complex" is a parody of rock concert. At the beginning of the show, a voice comes on like this (I'm paraphrasing):

Thank you for purchasing the rock concert manual. This manual will teach you to how host a rock concert. The most important thing for performers is choreography. Will the advent of autotuners and backing tracks, performers can now focus all their attention on dancing. You no longer have to worry about things like hitting the right notes or showing emotion. Start by loosening your hips. Now, lets try this simple beat...

They performed this on Leno recently as well. It is quite funny how they make fun of all the rock concert cliches.

I looked around the DirecTV website and din't find a digital video recorder that supports HDTV.

If you did get a Tivo one, you are limited by what they let you do. They can remove 30 second skip at well or make you watch advertisements. Stuff like MythTV has lots of features with no advertisements and it doesn't track what you record (and send it to some master database at HQ). Plus, MythTV-like programs allow you to do a bunch of other stuff like play ROMs, DVDs, look at your pictures of the network, listen to mp3s, check your weather, etc.

  22. computers games as well on Is Louder Better? · · Score: 1

In Half Life, the radio is usually louder than the gun shots. This was annoying, because it hurt to turn up the volume. However, the people who created Enter the Matrix did a great job. If you adjust the volume so the guns were the same level as Half Life, then the voices would be too low. So, you adjust the voices to be a good volume, and then you get rocking gun sounds. I am glad some games are finally including good dynamic range.

In terms of music, I also don't like stuff that is all loud. I heard they do that to get people's attention on the radio. That is one of the reasons I like symphony pieces in soundtracks, they have good dynamic range (Lord of the Rings, Jurassic Park, etc.)

  25. Re:Seattle on A Geek's Tour Of North America? · · Score: 1

Another cool Boeing thing to do is the factory tour. You can tour the largest building (by volume) in the world where they make different Boeing planes.

The Experience Music Project is another fun thing to do. The have all kinds of music exhibits enhanced with technology. The place is largely funded by Paul Allen, so most of the computers use Windows (but you can't see their interface). Actually, I have seen some of the demonstration computers have a BSOD :). They have lots of memoriblia. A section called Northwest Passage details the history of music in the Pacific Northwest. All along the exhibits they have relavent music and videos playing. They also have a new section following Jimi Hendrix's life. A really cool place is the Sound Lab where you can learn instruments and other music things. They have keyboards, drums, guitars, vocal rooms, mixing boards, DJ equipment, and record scratching gear that you can learn to use. All of these includes video screens that give step by step instructions on how to play. Once your are confident, you and your friends can get together in a jam room consisting of multiple instruments and just play around. You can also be your own band in another section (I don't remember the name). You go onstage and have your choice of songs. The songs play and you play along on your instrument of choice in front of an "audience." Finally, you can chill out in the Sky Church which is a very tall room with tons of lights, fog machines, jellyfishes on the ceiling, video projectors, and other things. Plus, half the room is covered by a huge LED screen.

If you wait long enough before coming here, you can see the scifi museum that is set to open in a year or two (talked about here on /. a while back). Also funded by Paul Allen and in the same building as EMP.

For hiking, I would suggest stuff over by Lake Chelan and Glacier Peak. They have a bunch of trails there which are away from civilization and have great views.

I know someone who owns an airport in Walla Walla. He took us up in his small plane. He flew my brother of the wind farms which is really cool.

If you know anyone with a boat, have them take you out on Lake Washington so you can see Bill G's house.
