  1. average 28? on The Average PC is Infested with Spyware · · Score: 3, Interesting

I'm a fairly saavy (hate that term) computer user, 20 years experience, professional web developer.. I know what to avoid, I know what to click no on, I have stop-the-pop on my win box.. I still have on average 40 different spyware apps installed on my box every week (between spybot and adaware) .. When ever I go over to someones house and run a scan for the first time, there are generally over 400... its getting outrageous.

Alpine is coming out with a HU this summer that will allow you to plug your iPod in, and store it in any location (glove box, center console, trunk, etc..) and the HU will display the song info and allow you to control the iPod. Google for more information, here is a quick link to their press release.

  6. iPod on Professor iPod Discusses Device's Social Impact · · Score: 2, Insightful

Having been a supporter of mp3 players for a while, I previously had the first Rio available, then went to mp3cd, had the first mp3cd available, then went with another mp3cd player.. and recently just got the iPod.
I by far like the iPod the best out of any of them. Firewire interface is great, was able to fill 15 gb within a couple of minutes.. I've found myself now listening to it on the way to my car, while folding laundry, in my car with iTrip FM broadcaster.. The size of the actual device, the ease of use of the interface and buttons, the large storage capacity, are all amazing.. battery life is enough to get me through a full day of work to.

  8. College blocking ftp? on FTP: Better Than HTTP, Or Obsolete? · · Score: 4, Interesting

I would say go with http.. my reason is simple.. my college blocks ftp! There are two sides of the story, first off, the complete blocking of ftp started a week ago when they switched firewalls.. they couldn't get the ftp to work, and they decided it wasn't a high priority so they didn't do anything to fix it... After yelling at the IT department for half the day I got the priority up. But besides that.. Even before, when they allowed ftp, it was only active ftp.. I was unable to go to a website, click on a file that is served from ftp:// and download it! I'd have to use flashfxp or another client to d/l files.. I was able to figure that out quickly, but what about the other 99% of the school that wants to download say shareware from download.com or a driver from somewhere.. they are denied! FTP is a superior protocol for file transfer in my opinion, but administrators don't seem to care about it as much as they do http.

Prestige is definitly one of the aspects of why people pirate. You say "People in these grups need to keep hidden" .. yeah from the eye of the public, but the underground scene is a whole different story all together.. If you are in a group such as DOD you get respect from 1000s of people.. and for some odd reason.. even though its just online, that sort of respect means something..

  11. EMusic on HMV to Sell Digital Downloads · · Score: 3, Insightful

Speaking as someone who hasn't bought a cd in almost 10 years, I was really suprised when I learned of EMusic. I am a fan of punk, ska & hardcore, and glady pay EMusic $15.00/mo in order to download their vast selection of music in that category. Granted, their other sections lack content, so my girlfriend gets upset when she can't find her newest pop album, but I am rather happy with the selection that they offer me.

  12. Message from Admin of Unix.com on unix.com Wins Domain Dispute · · Score: 5, Informative

From Neo (Admin of Unix.com) on their forums:

    A few facts:

    * We registered the UNIX.COM domain in 1993 in good faith.

    * We only registered UNIX.COM (UNIX.NET and UNIX.ORG were registered by others)

    * We have spent well over $25,000.00 on UNIX related legal fees.

    * We have spent many more thousands of dollars to maintain this site so that all people can freely discuss UNIX related issues without commericals.

    * We have spent a lot of $$$ to promote free speech regarding UNIX and UNIX like operating systems.

    * UNIX is a generic term regardless of X/Open's claim.

    * X/Open's false claim hurts the world UNIX community because it creates a negative environment and fragments the community with harsh actions that are, in reality, anti-open.

    * We do this because we love the UNIX philosophy and the true UNIX community.

This is my gift to you, each and everyone of you.

  16. Ureach.com on How Long Can The Free Services Stay Free? · · Score: 1

Ureach provided an excellent service. They would give you a toll-free number (877/888) and you would be able to get voicemail, read emails, listen to voicemail over the email, forward it. I had it for about two years with 60 minutes free per-month, and they decided to stop all free services. It's a shame that all these nice services that you get really used to end up closing down and try to charge you. I guess its just a big marketing scheme.

  17. Script Kiddies on Undernet In Serious Trouble: Any Suggestions? (Updated) · · Score: 1

My question is, where did all these script kiddies come from? I remember in the early 90s we did have our "irc warriors" .. but the most we'd do is throw up a link looker, find a split server, and take advantage of a bug to collide someone off.. or use a packet program like pepsi or smurf to kill off a person or two.. is there any real point to what these kids are doing? They arent doing this to gain control of a channel or get back at someone, they are just doing it because they feel like it? It was pretty sad a couple weeks ago when I saw some kid who was probably still in junior high, boasting the fact that he has over 400 rooted shells.. is there no security anymore that these kids can go around trading shells to run floodnets and packetnets off of? Down with script kiddies, we need to take EFNet (and other servers) back. nd [DeSynK/Havok]
