Sure they want to make money and have market share but they don't want a price war. How do you do that? By entering into pricing and market "agreements". 1: They only supported us after we won the battle of Lake Champlaign (sp) and it became obvious that the Britsh position was becoming untenable. In the aftermath of the revolution, we actually found ourselves gravitating more towards the British then the French.
2: This has less to do with what is the right or wrong course of action when dealing with Iraq then it has to do French commercial interests and French geo-political aspirations. What France is trying to do is set itself as a new global power, hence their neo-colonialist activities in Africa. If that is their goal then that's fine, a little competition between countires can be a good thing. However, I do have a couple of issues. First, I'm not sure France is prepared for the burden global leadership, I'm not sure they are ready to pay the bills in terms of money and blood. Second, when France stumbles, we end up leaving a lot of little, white crosses behind.
I did get a good laugh out of the French Foreign Minister going to London recently and saying something along the lines of how they should work together in the spirit of Anglo-French cooperation like when they teamed up to defeat Nazi Germany. I laughed so hard I almost pissed myself.

He won't be able to threaten friends, bully neighbors, or fund homicide bombers. As an islamic democracy (which technically Turkey is but IIRC they are officially a secular state) we can turn to Egypt, Syria, ect and say "look, democracy does work in the middle east". The reformists in Iran can turn to thier own government and say "look, democracy does work in the middle east".
No one wants this war, if we wanted it we'd never bother trying to get the UN to understand the what and why of what we are doing. We'd just up and do it. Oh there would be protests and flag burnings but in the end nothing would come of it.

I do think that the 'legalize it' movement has to take the lead in educating people about the long term neurological issues involved with pot. Yes I know there are long term neurological issues with alcohol but I think those are beter known. I would like to see a nice 20 year, longitudinal study from a country where pot is legal to compare severity and time of onset of things like short term memory loss between moderate smokers (only), moderate drinkers(only), mixed moderate smoker/drinker, and non-smoker/driker control group.
My guess is that the issues are: A) the cotten cartel is terrified of hemp and b) if Joe Average can grow enough pot for his own consumption then there is nothing to tax.
