I'm not a expert on Kevin Mitnick, but wasn't a big part of his shtick "social engineering", like calling folks on the PHONE to get passwords and other info about the systems he wanted to crack?
The artists don't see enough of the profits from a CD. And that's why we've flocked to Napster and Gnutella and the like.
People "flocked" to Napster because they could finally used their dormroom ethernet or cablemodem for something other than Porn or MMORPGs. People "flocked" to Napster because they could listen to music and decide if they liked the music without buying the CD [some did buy, some didn't buy].
I'll call baloney on both of ya. People "flocked" to Napster because they could get the music they ALREADY KNEW THEY LIKED without paying for it. And I seriously doubt that many said "This one's for you, [artist name here]! Stick it to the man!" as they downloaded their flavor-of-the-month. Artists profits, my ass. More like "WOOO HOOOOOO! FREE TUNEZ!!"
If you're going to generalize, make sure you've got all the bases covered!
If that's the case, I'm definitely not going to run the sim on my box... Don't want to go on vacation and come back to find a T1000 shuffling around in my bathrobe! Sean
By this logic Harley-Davidson should use their motorcycles to haul motorcycles to dealers instead of using big trucks I know, "it's not a fair comparison, because motorcycles aren't really designed for hauling huge loads and trucks are.."
Hmmm, maybe that's not such a bad comparison after all.. let's turn it around and see:
By this logic, Micro$oft should use Windows to run Hotmail, bCentral, etc, instead of using *nix OS's.. I know "it's not a fair comparison, because Windows isn't really designed for carrying huge loads and *nix OS's are.."
Even if CSS is copyrighted, I have a hard time believing that CSS is what the motion is really about. It's about the movies, and I'll be surprised if the MPAA isn't picking up the tab for DVD CCA's case.
On another note, I wonder how the poor schmuck that wrote CSS in the first place feels about this? Are you out there? Betcha all your programmer buddies don't talk to you anymore!!
I agree - I wouldn't want to see some big crappy billboard or piece of "art" permanently hanging in space.
But what about a temporary display? I think a man-made meteor shower (in lieu of your typical fireworks show) would absolutely rock!
Think about it - a space-based launch facility full of BB-sized or marble-sized projectiles (or whatever, I'm not a scientist...), chemically treated to flare up in colors that change over the duration of the burn. Maybe they could even be synchronized so that they would literally paint the night sky with whatever image or message was wanted..
...and so what if it would end up being a giant Coke logo or whatever, it would still be pretty freakin cool to look at!
I don't necessarily disagree with this, but of course C is a language designed for the current, keyboard-based, paradigm. A programming language designed for computers with voice-based input would presumably have an entirely different kind of structure.
And that programming language will be written in C, hammered out on a keyboard.
A first beta of K-Meleon was posted to the Web on Monday and is available for download. K-Meleon is available under the GNU private license, meaning the full source code is available to developers interested in building upon the browser. (GNU stands for GNU's Not Unix.)
Gotta hand it to Mary Jo Foley for getting "GNU" right and "GPL" wrong!
I wonder how many ZDNet "journalists'" sole duty is to play catch-up to/. all day long?;-) Sean
I'm all for Litestep as a replacement shell for windows explorer, but extensive customization really doesn't change the point-and-click nature of the windows beast..
only those windows in central view are fully sized and detailed, surrounding windows are visible though compressed / distorted (the actual method I think was to provide a geometrical box which you were looking into.. All non-selected windows were on the periphery of the box and thereby taking up less space)
Not sure how that relates to 3D.. Anyway, couldn't Enlightenment's window icons be considered "compressed / distorted" representations of a window? For that matter, couldn't a minimized icon be considered the same thing? It's all about abstraction, right? So it really boils down to personal preference and available technology..
Perhaps you are thinking more along the lines of the movie Disclosure where you make use of a virtual reality helm and gloves.
UGH. Puh-LEEZE. The worst concept for a VR interface to data I've ever seen. To find that data you need, you have to walk down the virtual hall, find the correct virtual filing cabinet, and flip through the damn virtual manila folders until you find the data. No thanks - I'll stick with SQL. seanmeister
According to this guy, it's next to, but not completely, impossible!

Censorship sucks - it's nice to know there's a way to get around it while you're fighting the fight. :-)
