To say that "war" causes scientific advancement is a gross oversimplification to the point of being wrong.

It is true to say that war has been a great motivator for research spending. But today, you will find that proffit is probably a larger motivation for research spending than war is (especially with drug, energy, and communicaton companies to name a few)

The person who wrote this blurb seems to have an understanding of English that is far worse than any I have seen in a widely-read publication, like slashdot. It read like a drunken IM conversation between close friends who lack the ability to touch-type. Reading this hurt my brain. Editors, please take your jobs more seriously; it could lead to increased readership and respect of slashdot.

Welcome to capitalism: the best economic system currently known to human kind. You may not be fond of the inevitability of advertising under such a system, but you would certainly like the alternative economic systems even less. And if you think you can redisign capitalism without the bad aspects, such as advertising, then you don't really understand capitalism.

Combining hashes is effectively just inventing a new hash algorithm with longer digests.

As a mathematician, this "seems" like it would be intuitively much more difficult for someone to discover an attack against.

As an engineer, this seems like it is obviously NOT a "good" solution.

If H1() and H2() are both weak, the hybrid H12() is obviously stronger than either, but also fundamentally flawed.

I'm thinking you aren't being honest (an engineering student wouldn't be called an "engineer" outside of a group of students) or you are a faux engineer (such as a "support engineer" aka a technician). It is also possible that you have somehow managed to royally fubar your finances, but engineers are usually too good at math to let that happen. So which is it?
