I was wondering about that too. The telomeres must be restored in the genitals somehow or the offspring would live shorter than their parents...
By the way, I saw a tidbit about resurrecting the Tasmanian devil on TV last night, and there were some people that claimed they had seen live ones and are not convinced that it's really extinct. That would be great because if they are resurrected from the puppy cells from the jars you can bet that a live one comes wandering out of the forest just then. And then you can compare the DNA of the 'real' tiger with the cloned one to see how much it differs!

  4. Re:Graphic Adventures on Top Ten Dying Game Genres · · Score: 1

Yeah, Tex was the best adventure character ever. The games were among the best I played with lots of freedom, interesting characters to talk to and good puzzles. Too bad Microsoft killed it... But at the The Unofficial Tex Murphy Web Site there is there is a tidbit about Tex coming back, online! Yes!

A 90 min. film would then take 90*60 = 5400 weeks to make. By the time you are at the end of the movie you cannot use the frames you shot in the very beginning any more because:
    a) you are dead
    b) the film has rotted away
    c) in case you recorded digitally: the equipment you used back then is not available anymore and you have to reverse-engineer it, which of course is illegal because of the DMCA :-)

  6. Diamond on Exactly One Kilogram Of Silicon · · Score: 2, Insightful

Pity they can't make a perfect sphere of 1 kg of diamond. Diamond has, I think, a less complicated chemistry to take into account. At least I never heard of diamond surfaces oxidizing.

  7. CD's and harddisks on What Software Do You Use for Unix Backups? · · Score: 1

I use mkisofs and cdrecord to copy all my data to a CD-RW. I have two of those; the oldest data gets overwritten. At work I use cp to copy all data to an extra harddisk that is removed after the copy is made. And I keep my backup for home at work and vice-versa. Very important in case your building burns down.

  8. Scary on "Killer Flu" Emerging On Both Sides of the Pacific · · Score: 2, Informative

This is really scary. I have a heart disorder. People with heart disorders are extra vulnerable to the flu, so I hope my doctors will warn me in time and tell me what (not) to do... I heard it takes about 10 years to make a vaccin against a new type of flu so that will probably come too late.
I think I'll stay indoors and only invite people if I really have to :-)

  14. This is great news on Office 2003 and XML · · Score: 2, Funny

Many offices will soon have to upgrade their PC's and software to be able to use XP together with this new MS software. Apart from this being a Good Thing for the economy, this has another important side effect: the 2nd hand market will be flooded with PIII's and cheap Athlons. I was thinking of buying a new computer to make a nice Linux server but I guess I will wait until this new Office thing comes out.

Maybe something almost as good is requiring of a computer program that is to be sold in the EU that it does only one thing. If it does more than one thing (like be an OS AND a browser AND a media player AND a vacuum cleaner) it is called a program suite and the separate components must also be sold separately (and work separately of course). This is, of course, very difficult to enforce in practice. But that is something for software sellers to worry about.
