Yosemite Sue, who, although she hasn't posted much in a while, had some really insightful stuff to say on some topics. She was able to look at the big picture when other people got caught up in technical details.
Apple changed their royalty policy. They formed a patent pool with Sony, Panasonic, Compaq and a bunch of other companies and made Firewire free for all of them. Anyone not in the pool gets charged a quarter per machine, IIRC.
I'm sorry, but just because Windows 98 has poor support for IEEE-1394 doesn't say spit about whether the technology's good or not. I've used a VST Firewire hard drive at my office and I must say that is is the sweetest thing to come along in a long time. I plug it in and voila! The hard drive is automatically installed with no SCSI-ID crap to fiddle with, no extra power cable, no nothing. I can copy stuff from my computer to the Firewire HDD and if I pull out the cable while it's copying, it pauses and tells me to please reconnect the drive. I even played a Quicktime movie off the Firewire HDD and it did the same thing when I disconnected it. Plug it back in and it picks up where it left off.
Sony makes iLink/Firewire CDRW drives, which would probably be nice because as a rule of thumb they say to keep your source drive and your CDRW on separate chains. There's other stuff like printers and speakers that use Firewire, so it's not all just video cameras... although I must say that video editing with Firewire and MiniDV is sweet too.
I knew it! This is all part of Carmack's evil master plan. He wants people to buy Quake3, so how do you wean players away from Quake1? Release the source code and let the Q1 community be destroyed by cheaters and unscrupulous hackers. Then when they get sick of being toyed around with by hacked servers, they'll come crawling to Quake3. I figured out John Carmack! He's up to something sneaky, that John! Boycott Quake3!
Quake: Pushed the first crop of Pentiums. I'm not saying it was the main reason anyone bought Pentiums or anything like that, but how many of you first saw Quake and whined to your parents until they bought you a Pentium?
Quake 2: Hardware 3D acceleration. At first I thought, that's insane! Who would buy a $250 Voodoo2 card to play a game? Nowadays you can't find a video card that doesn't have some sort of 3D acceleration.
Now we got Quake 3. Carmack's meeting with Steve Jobs back in '98 is why Mac's have OpenGL and Quake3 now. The almost-simultaneous release of Q3A for Win32, Linux and Mac has been a big boost of legitimacy for gaming on alternative platforms. I'd say Carmack isn't just the biggest influence on linux- and open-source gaming, I'd say he had a pretty big influence on the computer industry in general.
Am I talking out of my butt, or does it sound like it makes sense?
What about those times when you have to scratch your head or stroke your facial hair to think? Or pick sand out of your eye (or even boogers out of your nose)? Or reach for a glass of water, or pick up a pencil you dropped? Or swat a fly on your monitor?
Even if there were some foot pedal or other device to turn they keyboard on/off, that's too weird. Just gimme a good old keyboard.
We here in Cali caliente have to pay taxes federales, state income taxes, and a wonderful 8.25% sales tax in some areas (at least 7.25% all over the state). Anyone got it worse than us?
Ok, what sound codecs can xanim handle? I know it handles cinepak for video, but i need to know about compatible audio codecs or else it's gonna be pretty big. I'll see about doing an MPEG version too. Hold on...
I have the resources to recompress it into an xanim-compatible version within the next couple hours, but I'm wondering if I'll get into a legal tangle over it? Should I, shouldn't I?
Mario Bros. was the reason why I played around my local sewer. QBert was why I broke my arm trying to hang from the ceiling. Frogger was something I thought would be fun to play on the freeway Gauntlet told me that drinking ale would increase my health. Ninja Warriors taught me that in the military, only white soldiers are allowed to have guns, and black soldiers are only issued knives.
Anyone else out there been negatively influenced by a game?

It is if you're on the 20th floor of an office building.
You mean they've made a comeback?

I think they're just gonna come after you. Be careful, man.
Item 29 points out that slashdot linked to a site that had the DeCSS, and notes other sites that linked to sites with DeCSS. Is this a threat?
Oh, and get item 32. They're saying that because of DeCSS, the whole DVD industry is going to dry up. What a horrible joke.
I got in earlier. They have G3's and G4's
Mac OSX will be coming in half a year, with better multiproc support. Until then, Adobe's products tend to work well with multiple processors.
The layer known as the Earth's crust.
Yeah, I know it's a groaner. But hey, it's the holidays and I've had too much Krispy Kreme.

Merry christmas to everyone that makes this page the best!
Thank you!
Play along with me here:

Oh whoops. Spoke too soon. Man, that's insane!
Man, that's cheap. And I was already a lizard before this guy was. Just ask my ex-girlfriend.

Ah, skip to 7 and call it Heptium. Then when people ask where was the sextium, tell 'em it was the Xeon or Pentium Pro.
Come to think of it, wasn't the Pentium Pro the actual sextium then? The Pentium's are all P5, and I faintly recall that the Pentium Pro goes by P6...
