This happens all the time. Toyota sells the code for the Prius to other manufacturers. Ford sells engines to other manufacturers. Your analogy is flawed.
Why does it have to be free? If you want to read Stanger in a Strange Land for free, whats stopping you from going to the library? If the $21 price tag on the Starship Troopers opus is too much, then head over to Amazon and get the novel for $5. This whole 'everything should be free' movement is weird.
Yes it is. Theres a difference in what Sony says in a press release and what they tell thier manufacturing partners. Sony says 'we wont stop porn' to the media. But then a rep goes to a replication plant and reminds the owner that Sony would not be happy if any 'unrated' material were to be printed. The message is sent.
Porn execs are typically sleazy and untrustworthy, but for some reason, I believe them over Sony this time.
So, according to the majority of these posts it doesnt matter how many starving people Bill Gates has helped feed, or how many children lived because of the Gates' contributions to medicine, or how many families recieved shelter from the elements because of Bill Gates opening his check book. All that means nothing because you think MS could have written a better email program? Since IE isnt better than Firefox and Office is a resource hog, that takes precedence over a baby in Africa getting vaccinated?
The more I read, the sicker I get. Everyone posting has a life 1000x better than most of the people Gates gives money too, just by the fact that you have electricity. But still, you feel that not getting to see the source code for Outlook is a big enough slight to negate giving hundreds of millions of dollars to charity.
What percentage of your income have you given? How much of your time do you donate? Before buying that harddrive or monitor, did you even think about how much medicine that money would've bought a sick child? Did you care enough to even pause before handing over your credit card? Before trashing -anyone- that helps others, look at yourselves.
Have you ever felt that sometimes people go out of their way to put down Microsoft.
Basically the article says: Vista is the best version of Windows ever...But its not. Vista is very secure...But only if secure it. You get a free Antivirus program...Buts its not as good as the ones you have to pay for. Vista is very easy to use...But I still had to click on stuff, so it sucks Vista has a cool search feature...But Apple had it first.
I just read a bunch of replies telling me how dumb BR and HD-DVD are, or that they're too expensive, DRM sucks, or how its not a big enough leap, yadda yadda yadda. I was about to write a lengthy reply, then I realized that behind me, I have an HDTV playing an HD-DVD of Casablanca and it looks stunning. I'm happy. Thats all that really matters.
What exactly are you complaining about? Are you actually blaming Microsoft for the low cost of data storage? Or are you blaming Microsoft for seeking outside help? Or are you blaming the US government for helping secure the computers of 600 million users?
Are you upset at helping to pay for the filling the pothole outside my door? What about the FDA spending money to improve drugs for women that you'll never take? Or are you just mad that Microsoft seems to actually be trying to make Vista a decent OS?
You seem to have so much blind hatred for MS that you're quick to blame them for anymove they make, for any reason.
Unlike DVDs, HD-DVD's have dual keys, 1 for the title, and 1 for the player. At the most, this guy has managed to make 3 titles playable on a single player. What will happen next is Cyberlink will have it's PowerDVD keys revoked and new keys will be provided with a patch.
So at most, you'll be able to 'back up' (or Pirate) the current batch of Full Metal Jacket HD-DVD's to play on an older version of PowerDVD.
So dont go around yelling about how HD-DVD is cracked, cuz it's not.
To 99.5% of the population, the following sentence is pure gibberish. But for the chosen few, it's like porn and candy all rolled up into one.
"Just a few examples are new sensors and materials from collaborations on bio-info-nano convergence, improved analysis of engineering problems, as well as Earth, life and space science discoveries from supercomputing and data mining, and bringing entrepreneurs into the space program."
Why is this such a sore spot for so many people? Just because MySql no longer supports the flavor of the month distro of Linux, you all throw up your hands crying 'I never liked you anyway'.
The vast majority of mysql users will never buy a support contract, and those few who do, will probably be RedHat or Suse. (When was the last time a Debian user admitted he needed help for anything?)
Instead of having to support dozens of distros, Mysql is supporting the main two. It may be Open Source, but it's still a business.
Malware designers can take any linux install, add their evil software or compromised mailservers to the install process, and distribute it without the end user knowing the difference. How is this any different than Vista, except than in Linux's case, it's been possible for years.
HDs visual benefit is far from marginal. Its a huge jump and the fact is, once you've seen HD video, anything less looks muddy. You really dont realize what you're missing out on.
An HD-DVD player is not $1000. It's $500 or less. Thats half of what you balked at.
Triple Format? Did you make that up? I'm not sure how you did your math but even most regular DVD players can play 3-4 different formats (DVD, VCD, CD, JPEG, etc etc). And there are only 2 HD formats (unless you're a crazy person and count WMV-HD)
Exactly how is the DRM on HD-DVD's hurting your viewing experience? I've had a player for months at at no time has a little window popped up demanding more money before allowing me to press 'play'.
Even it they really did find a way to get 'free' energy, it doesnt really matter. I dont even get excited over announcements like this anymore. Because if its false, then everything stays the same. If its true, the current energy corporations will do anything and everything possible to make sure it never sees the light of day...and everything stays the same.
I was able to get coupon codes up and running in less than a day on my heavily modified site. 'Massive' modification and changing a few files are 2 different things.
Shipping is nowhere near as complicated as it is for other sites. There are more than a few cart applications where stores just spout 'FREE SHIPPPING' because they couldn't figure out how some goofy table sytem. OsCommerce is a lot easier.
THe admin menu isn't the greatest, but so what? It's just a bunch of links so you can always create your own.
I've worked with at least 10 different carts and OsCommerce is by far the most flexible and easiest to set up/maintain.

When Apple released its lastest OS, they talked about all the pretty colors it has, and the cool music you can listen to.
When Microsoft released Vista, they talked about all the pretty colors it has, and the cool music you can listen to.
The latest release of Linux is trumpeting virtualization, hypervisors, microoptimizations, and something about a lockless radix-tree.
Nuff said.
