i understand that cloning a sheep or any other animal for that matter wont be the same as a human, and that all species are different, but maybe they should get it right with one species first before rushing right into humans tho. for all we know, scientists will never be able to create healthy clones of any species. we just cant tell right now. i just dont see what the rush to clone a human is, other than the prestige of being the first to do it. i know medical knowledge will come from it, but in my opinion that is at most 50% of the motivation behind this man's work. I think maybe we should attain a better success rate with animals lower on the food chain before we work on humans. why not work on cats and dogs first. that way when my dog and cat die i can just start over with new ones!
keep em coming! i dont see troll in there! This surprises me since I know how much you linux hippy freaks love to mod things as trolls! Knock me down a few more points so my karma will matter again:D
"If the opening movie is any indication of what's to come when Kingdom Hearts becomes available in the US, its going to be the best thing to hit the PS2 since, well, Final Fantasy X"
Umm, maybe I'm in the minority here, but that was possibly the lamest game intro I have ever sat through. Maybe the game itself is good, but as I watched the intro, I just kept finding myself asking 'wtf is this?!?!' over and over. Is falling in the ocean over and over until you find the hidden underwater Disney shrine the point of the game? wtf?!
Consoles are easier to use because they are one trick ponies, for the most part. i think of consoles as dedicated hardware, that are for the most part single purpose machines. If you use your computer mainly for games/surfing/email, then a console is probably a viable replacement, or will be at some point. My point is by the time there is a console that can do everything my Mac can, it is in my point of view, no longer a console. Once I can hook up my lcd/crt to it, hook up a firewire cam and edit video, rip mp3s, burn cds, dvds, etc... why should it still be considered a console? Cause it has a 'Playstation 9' badge on it? If it walks like a duck, swims like a duck, and quacks like a duck, then yada yada yada...
"...Consoles are the desktop of tomorrow." Maybe if all you do is play games. If consoles get to the point that they can do everything a computer can, have (standard) firewire/usb ports, pci slots for expansion options, room for extra drives and whatnot, and you hook them up to a crt or lcd monitor on your desk, guess what.... its a computer, not a console. Until a 'console' has all of those things, and probably more, it wont be replacing any of my desktops. On the other hand, my PS2 rocks for a quick game of GTA3 or whatever, and I appreciate it for that.
I agree. I love my Kensington Turbo Mouse(s) I bought my first when when i got my performa 6220 and it still works to this day. They of course now have usb versions available, one of which is attached to my G4 tower. The software for them is also excellent, altho the OSX version is lacking in features still compared to its OS9 counterpart. They may seem a bit pricey for a pointing device, but it should last you a long time. My original one has lasted for 4 or 5 years now.
SXSW is a music and film festival, and a LOT of industry people are there. I have no idea whether this guy actually saw it or not, but it is not beyond the realm of possibility that it could happen at SXSW
actually, the isp he originally got the service from, and cofounded, had no such use restrictions. that isp, TLG, was then bought by Best, which was bought by Hiway, which was bought by Verio. Verio's Use Policy states: "Spamming -- Sending unsolicited bulk and/or commercial messages over the Internet (known as "spamming"). It is not only harmful because of its negative impact on consumer attitudes toward NTT/VERIO, but also because it can overload NTT/VERIO's network and disrupt service to NTT/VERIO subscribers. Also, maintaining an open SMTP relay is prohibited...."
I understand those arent the terms he agreed to, but they are the ones he has to obey now if he wants to keep the service. I can understand where he is coming from to a certain extent. Nobody likes to sign up for a service and then have features you use taken away from you. But the truth is I bet Verio could give a rat's ass who this guy is, and what he did for the internet. It could probably be Tim Berners-Lee in his place, and the response would be the same. I think Verio thinks of him as a disposable customer, regardless of who he is, and that if he wants to run his relay, she should try finding an isp that will let him do it. Dont sit around waiting to see if Verio will really cut off service on April 4th. Thats like standing on a traintrack and waiting to see if the train really will hit you.
well, yes. i respect mr raskin a lot too, and owe a lot of my happy computing experiences to him. that's why this article is troubling me. i pretty much disagree with most of what he said as well... I think skinning is a good thing, as long as it is based off a workable standard. take for instance kaleidoscope for os9. You could completely changed the way your windows looked, and the colors of everything you wanted, but it still stuck to the functional standards. menus and buttons were all in the same place, although they might look funky. and the best part of kaleidoscope skins is the fact that they are system wide, and work on any properly programmed app. This is an example of a skinning application that did it right.
raskin's attitude in this article does worry me tho. he is a very smart man, but i dont like the 'my way or the highway' attitude he is taking. i think freedom to customize can greatly enhance the computing experience when it is based off of what he would call a functional 'scientific' gui model. I have been reading stuff raskin said for many years about GUIs, and i have agreed with him for the most part. but i can only listen for so long before i have to say 'Put up or shut up.' Mr Raskin, please show us this gui you have in mind for all of us. Please stop talking about it endlessly and just do it. You can rag on Steve Jobs all you want... but to quote Steve, 'Real artists ship.'

whether or not the cli is more productive depends wholly on your task.
is using cli the most efficient way to do traceroutes, grep searches, and other similar things? yes.
is cli the best way to browse the web? depends. lynx is good for news sites, not so good for porn!
is cli the best way to edit graphics? ummm.. let me know when the cli version of photoshop comes out and ill let you know.
my point is yes, years ago, the cli was the most productive interface for computers, but that is only because there was nothing worth doing at the time that couldnt be handled with a cli. at this point computers have so many uses that it is mainly a matter of the right tool for the right job.
Steve jobs did NOT invent the macintosh. he was the team leader after a while, and made it into his baby, but it was not his idea, or creation. in fact, jeff raskin deserves more credit for the wizardry of the mac ui than just about anyone else. i may not agree with everything he said about apple and/or jobs, but strictly from his experience, he has a right to voice his opinion, and the smart people will at least take what he says into consideration even if they dont directly follow the 'law of raskin'
that rolling stone article you posted the link to was great... gives a good glimpse of what the first gamers were like. "These are heads, most of them. Half or more of computer science is heads." I really get a kick out of that line in particular.
but.... the old photshop is still compatible... it runs in the Classic compatability layer, and quite well I might add. If you are so inclined, you could keep running the classic version of photoshop, presumably forever. How is that a lack of compatability? The problem with photoshop wasn't that people couldn't run the old one, it was that they wanted the native version. No on HAS to buy this new version of photoshop, as you seem to imply. Same with Office and countless other apps. If people are happy running them OS9 style then more power to them
Yes, the main point of the excellent Apple software is to generate more hardware sales. This is of course Apple's biggest source of revenue. They are a hardware company because they get most of their revenue from new machine sales, but they are also a software company because those nice new machines would be nothing without the excellent Apple software. Apple makes great hardware, then develops software which encourages people to go out and get that hardware. I think this is a win-win situation. Apple is motivated to make top of the line software, much of which they release for free... and we are motivated to buy new machines. For some people it is still a better idea to stick with their old trusty machines they have had a few years, but for those of us that are interested in burning our own movies and such, Apple makes it worth it to be a customer
easy, download a blizzard game from a warez site, then connect to any bnetd server you want. i think that is blizzard's point in this... they use bnet, partially at least, for license verification. each cd gets a user id attached to it, and you can only have 1 ip using an id at a time. Not the best checking in the world, but it keeps most people from giving the game to their friends so they can hook up and play... cause they cant. at least not on bnet. with bnetd you can play online without any checks that you actually bought the game. so while they may not actively encourage piracy, bnetd does nothing to diminish it, which is one of the key functions of the original bnet
Carmack may not have said "I promise to release everything under the gpl" but sometimes actions speak louder than words. He has released Wolfenstein3D, the Doom Games, Quake, and Quake2... all under the GPL. Although he may not have made any 'promises' he has said he plans to continue releasing source to his old engines, and to this point he has released more game code under GPL than any other professional developer I know of.
You say the movie is an insult to Tolkein, but it was he himself that sold the movie rights to it, for whatever reason. Call me cynical, but I think Tolkein's surviving family is motivated by something other than 'honoring the memory of JRR.' The movie is good, and I'm glad that it was finally made, after the rights being sat on for so long. If the author sells the movie rights to his works, I hardly think it is fair to come along and blame the filmmakers for actually going through with it.
BTW, this movie is no Scary Movie 2 or Leprechaun 4.
