Those two names invoked in the same sentence makes me feel a little ill. Nothing but bad experiences with both, what could possibly go wrong with them teaming up?
Yeah, I see that going well..."trash the rules but please respect ours". "OK", said no hacker ever. Speaking of ruses...that's the very definition of these "Hackathons".
I don't trust anything technological anymore that requires uniquely identifying information to be used and stored for my access to the device. In theory it is the best thing since sliced bread; in reality it is a much different story. The whole catch-22 about supplying uniquely identifying information is that it has to be stored and anything that is stored has already been proven to be vulnerable to collection and that collection is further vulnerable to mass distribution or to be used against you. Security is no longer secure in a digital format in a connected world. I can change my password, not so much my fingerprint without great pain I'd imagine.
Releasing the information on the anniversary of 9/11 can't be completely coincidental. On a day national security is rallied behind by those in power to protect us from another such incident it comes across as just a PR move to lessen the outrage if possible of those that will be up in arms over their activities.
Here I am fresh out of mod points. For those that don't know when to use "a.." or "an..." I'll keep it as simple as I can. It isn't how you spell the word that determines which is used it is how it is pronounced. If it is a vowel sound you use an, if it is a constant sound you use a. For instance "an union" even though it starts with a vowel and "an hour" is correct even though it doesn't. Not nearly has many words that begin with the letter h should be proceeded by "an" as people seem to give it credit for however....."a history", "a hit", "A HELICOPTER", and so on. That's my "an" or "a" rant for the day.
Remember when they froze the Minecraft purchase account with a whooping $750k in it? While that is an absurd amount to keep in a PayPal account, that was right when the game became a household name and was selling so fast that every time you refreshed the sales page it went up by almost 1000. This is what PayPal does, they have given countless examples over the years as to why you should NOT be using them!
I agree, should have been more clear on my comment. I made it after reading comments posted to others, not the actual story so it would have been better served in response to one of the many rather than a stand-alone comment.
This is just a case of Russia being opportunistic obviously. Look!! Quick!! The US isn't all rainbows and unicorns like they pretend to be and look at all those gay rights while you're at it.
Sure, all the jabs are at the US and lord knows it deserves every last one we get with our ridiculous treatment of pretty much everyone in the world including our own citizens but come on...Russia never has and never will be the lesser evil of the two. Using Russia as your champion only significantly diminishes the whole debate.
If you aren't going to keep abreast of current affairs and the charges of which they are bringing against him it might be best to not talk about said subject.
I've watched enough movies to know that is what spies do...infiltrate other spy organizations. Welcome to the first time someone sat around a fire with a bunch of people they just befriended in their freshly skinned furs to find out when they were going to be bringing their pointy sticks to the other camp of guys sitting around a fire eating their freshly butchered mammoth.
Many moons ago when I was in high school I attended a slightly less than average school. The parents couldn't care less for the most part when it comes to districts such as that. Most of them graduated high school and that was it and those that went to college either struck out in the work force, didn't graduate or majored in communications or culinary arts (or some other useless major for the vast majority of the people that pursue said subject). Most parents whose children are attending poor school districts are not interested in fixing the system, particularly when it comes to having to pay more taxes to do so which is always the proposed cure. Sure, you get your handful of activist parents who try their best to make a difference but when it comes to actually improving school education and conditions they are faced with the uncaring mass of people who just don't care what you are trying to do.
You have pretty much made his point for him. There is no private business in the world that has the funds or ability to fund the loses long enough to eventually get to the point where profit is possible, particularly when it comes to colonizing Mars. I can almost guarantee there be more deaths and lost missions than actual settlements.
That is a ridiculous argument...the moon is beautiful, don't mine it. First, do you have any idea how large of a scale we would have to mine to make the moon not "beautiful". The moon isn't exactly tiny and any mining done for generations wouldn't be noticeable just looking up at it. There is nothing to "wreck", it's a barren wasteland without life, bio-diversity or penguins to hurt. Every major source of energy we use right now does more damage to the Arctic and potentially every living organism on Earth than mining on the moon ever would. If the moon could provide something the benefit of mankind, that is more important than saving the moon as some priceless painting to hang in a museum.
We don't need video games for that. All you have to do is look to Twitter or ANY online medium where the user feels safe behind their keyboards to find all kinds of hatred, egotism and racism. That has nothing to do with games. If you think it's only white heterosexuals that conduct themselves in that manner, in online games or elsewhere, than you are naive. It's universal.
We have politicians that have staked their career on this not being the case, who have spent massive amounts of money (so they could line their own pockets with some of it) on speculation which is much more important than those damned scientific studies and the children, who is going to protect these sweet, innocent children. We are now going to have a whole generation of mass murdering, raping, drug addicted, Mortal Kombat killers running our streets. Don't let REAL data tell you otherwise. It's true, because it makes me millions and don't forget to re-elect Dumbass A next election.
I thought for sure the first comment would be "I'm on to you NSA...down time for service "upgrades" " I'm disappointed in you my tin foil hat wearing brethren.
Easy, the artists are indebted to those that are no better than mafia in less stylish suits. They have a history of signing musicians that see riches but get pennies and no rights to their songs. Their opinion is irrelevant in infringement matters.
The problem is that a "secret" court NEEDS to be set up with ALL those capabilities in order to ensure rampant abuse of the system isn't occurring. The fact that Obama and others have used the existence of the courts as proof that nothing could possibly go wrong is flat out exaggerating and willfully deceiving the American, and world, public.
Because the world would have to be responsible for their inaction and cut off billions in funding, nobody wants that! Oh wait....everybody wants that, except politicians of course. To much money going around in lobbying and special interest groups and whatever else can put money into their pockets to take a stance that might hurt that.
Those two names invoked in the same sentence makes me feel a little ill. Nothing but bad experiences with both, what could possibly go wrong with them teaming up?
I think you are not comprehending what was intended. This summary isn't blaming Snowden, it is crediting him with revealing what was going on.

I didn't know his dream was for his sons to make a fortune off his activism...silly me.

Let me be the first to say that we will all miss your witty posts on good ole /. :D

Score: 5, Funny doesn't do this post justice. Well played, sir!

Plenty of people "discovered" it through the years without a doubt....just nobody big enough to write the history books or be taken seriously.

The review in the link above currently has 278 up votes while the 4 star rating directly below it has 2. /. keep doing what you do!
