This reminds me of how the employees of Origin Software held a big bonfire after the company died. Instead of code, they burned the Ultima Online 2 schedules and design docs.
Wow, 12 months? After 6 months of unemployment, I'd be selling my ass on the street for five bucks a ride. Thankfully I found a job after ~3 months of searching (and after moving away from cali).
Those figures certainly agree with what I've experienced. In April, I was laid off from my decade-long software engineering job in the North SF Bay area. I quickly noticed that every week, *hundreds* of other local guys were being laid off also. Some from big places like HP, Agilent, and Autodesk. Some from little shops like the place that I was at.
From talking to other people in my situation, it seemed that the rule of thumb was that you should expect to search 1 month for every $10K that you expect to earn. Based on that, plus the nasty cost of living in northern California, I beat a hasty retreat from the area. Thankfully, I'm gainfully employed elsewhere now.
I did a marathon 40-hour programming session in a workshop once. Besides the noise and fumes, my clothes, hair, and skin were coated with a fine layer of yellow paint. I also coughed up yellow junk for the next two days. I'm sure the stuff was toxic.
Sure, it's only 2D, but it definitely requires players to "accomplish outrageous driving stunts to pick up passengers and quickly deliver them to their destinations"
I take it you guys have seen the ingame movies? Looks very nice, and seems to take game physics to a whole new level, but at the same time it looks as if you need a Pentium 5 to get it to run properly!
I will never ever buy a program that needs "Activation"!
Forget the P5, it sounds like you won't be playing HL2 online since it features something similar to "Activation" -- a unique SteamID, authenticated every time you play online, that also prevents you from running the same copy of HL2 on multiple PC's. Sort of like WinXP:)
Every time I need a nonstandard windows control (currency edit, picture buttons, resizable dialog box, etc), I hit sites like http://www.codeproject.com or http://www.codeguru.com
I've used tons of code from these sites, and would encourage windows developers to check them out instead of re-inventing the wheel.
My first real programming job was at the Pacific Geoscience center (a decade ago), maintining the unix programs and scripts that downloaded seismic data from these remote GPS stations.
I would expect that a metallica game would feature bus crashes, setting yourself on fire, beating up hookers, etc. Too bad Grand Theft Auto 3 already exists.
I've been happily using popup blockers for a few months, but have started to encounter sites like www.arcadeathome.com that use "anti-anti-popup" software to try to stop people like me.
Is there any solution? I defy anybody to try to use the forums on that site for more than 10 minutes without going insane.
I use "trade show loot" as a baromoter for how well the industry is doing. 3 years ago, I topped out at about 15 t-shirts for a single day at ESC.
This year, I only got one. And it was from Microsoft. Everybody else was giving away pens and candy and garbage like that. I guess we know who's dominating the embedded systems space nowadays.
While listening to CNN radio yesterday, I suggested a "shock & awe" drinking game to a co-worker. Unfortunately, we realized that we'd drink ourselves blind within 10 minutes:)
Despite the sentiment of the story, I am seeing a lot of posts here that blame CE. Why is this? CE is just the operating system. It's possible to write bad software under any OS. Blame BMW's engineers, not CE. On the few occasions where my TiVo has frozen or acted screwy, am I allowed to say "it's because they used linux"? Of course not.
The [thrifty|poor] among us need these early adopters. They help to finance the subsequent development that turns a product into a mature, affordable thing.
Since much pro-gun FUD is about "keeping your home and family safe", one statistic that I'd love to see is this:
How often a gun is used sucessfully in a "home defence" scenario (killing/wounding/scaring an intruder) VERSUS how often a gun is mis-used in the home (murder, accidents, etc).
Is the middle of the disc called the "corn hole"?

Simpsons episodes? I thought that the accepted unit of measurement for storage devices was "libraries of congress"?

Considering that the BASIC interpreter inside the C64 was licensed from Microsoft, I suppose that the C64 is actually a relative of Visual Basic.

20 years ago the coder usually was the artist and the musician also.
But yes, your point still stands -- he's not making a dime from these games anymore.
So would he mind if I pirated his e-books, then?

FWIW, they've been doing this sort of thing in western Canada since 1991.

Should this article have been posted to our ugly purple friend, games.slashdot.org instead?
Yes
Since this article is games-oriented, why isn't it in the new, garish-colored games.slashdot.org?

Tons of hotographs and MP3 samples included..
My browser doesn't seem to have hotograph viewer support. Is that one of those new 3-D hologram thingies?

Yea, just like a Tape ARchive is supposed to be done!

Has anybody figured this out?
