I'm surprised no-one has mentioned the RTLSDR yet. A $15 DVB-T Tuner than can tune from ~70MHz to 1700MHz. Maximum bandwidth is about 2MHz. It has poor dynamic range (8 bit ADC), but for receiving strong signals it's awesome. There is a source block for gnuradio, and some nice tuners for windows (HDSDR, sdrsharp,..).
Lots of cool stuff to do. For instance I've successfully received MODE-S transponder replies from airplanes as far away as 200km with the stock antenna.
Tuning to FM radio, portable mobile radios, DECT, GSM, Exploring the spectrum,..
Of course it cannot compare to an USRP or this new Phi, but it's very cheap and is perfect for getting started, and does not require a HAM license.

Or muffins. We don't like muffins around here. We want no muffins, no toast, no teacakes, no buns, baps, baguettes or bagels, no croissants, no crumpets, no pancakes, no potato cakes and no hot-cross buns and definitely no smegging flapjacks.
Normally these cheap devices directly control an actuator (coil or motor etc..) that is physically embedded in the door lock. If you can open the device, only little logic is needed to directly drive the actuator using the power supply, or gate the responsible transistor with a wire.
It would be more secure if the scanning device had a digital link to a control system located somewhere else, that would verify the code and drive the actuator directly.
I wonder when we'll ultimately just drop the concept of "frames"...
For a CCD polled thousands of times per second,
And how is that not still sampling ? you are suggesting the framerate should be in the kHz range.
A question. In an urban environment, where the device is unaware of the surrounding geometry, how is it going to compensate for all the sound reflections ?
how can you say it was better than BSG ? The "new" BSG series was epic, Caprica was a load of crap. When i saw the last episode yesterday i was wishing it would be canceled. It's just terrible.
The first part of season 1 was reasonable and had some interesting concepts. But GOD, it was simply horrible since the second part. It was an embarrassment to the BSG franchise.
Frankly, i'm glad they cancelled this piece of garbage.
It uses a high speed spinning mirror and requires head tracking, not very practical imo.
Second, this is already quite old, the first time i saw this exact setup was at least a few years ago.

I completely agree! Steam sales can get a little dangerous though : http://www.fantikerz.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/steam_sale_time_wallet-240x300.jpg
And Klingon Gagh and Bloodwine .. oh wait ..
I put sambal on my bread in the morning, i so love that stuff, and I have black hair. I have yet to see any of my red friends try that.
additional: the shutdown is to prepare for 14 TeV collisions (7 TeV per beam)
It will be SHUTDOWN at the end of the year for 20 months to PREPARE for higher power tests. So it will be 2014 before they can run these.
looking at the video on their site, the lag on the camera alone makes it unusable at speeds > 1km/h. It might be cool as a kids toy, but racing ? no.
girth ..
Broadcast on all frequencies and all known languages, including Welsh.
er, shut up Neil you ugly poo-faced git!
I have a mint-in-the-box signed wesley crusher action figure for sale, also getting rid of my lightsaber collection, interested ?

Well, from google maps, the thing is ~1.2km by 500m, so nothing close to 1,000 km ...
somebody switched the decimal symbol perhaps ?

Seconded

The carbon units will now provide V'ger the required information.
Death by snu snu !
Jeez, get some freaking contacts then ..
