How is it so hard to understand that playing a game for stakes can be simple, recreational fun? Going into an evening of gambling with only the money you are prepared to lose is no different than going to a fair or holiday holding only the money you are prepared to spend on rides, gifts, foods, and frivolous purchases.
I actually agree with the hard-disk manufacturers. It was wrong to define kilobyte to equal 2^10 bytes, because kilo by definition of SI standards = 10^3. I like the terms Ki and Mi, because they are different and hence, have no confusion. They are not awkward at all. I think all OS to adopt the standard in their user interfaces to use K for 10^3 and Ki for 2^10. Which they use by default is up to the OS manufacturer.
I keep reading comments that it is "a sad state of affairs" that news of a celebrity's death has garnered much more response from the world then, say, news of a recent scientific breakthrough.
The fact of the matter is, Michael Jackson is one of the most recognized persons in the world, and for quite a long time too. So what if he has contributed nothing/little to science? You think without music, art, and other culture we would be the same human beings? Art and music define us and advance us as much as science - why else would cavemen draw?
So what if so-and-so was responsible for inventing solar-power, or discovered water on mars. That isn't affecting the majority of the poor population in Bangladesh. Yet, they ALL listen to Michael Jackson.
Yep. I've always said that Vista was the Windows ME of XP. In other words Vista is to XP that Me was to 98: a poor stop-gap solution until the actual successor came out (XP for 98, and 7 for XP).
I agree that the photoshopped images look better. I also agree with the developers that it would hurt gameplay. We all remember complaining about Quake's dark palette of brown and grey. Yet all those screenshots did JUST THAT.
There are two possible explanations: (1) Most low-uid people have become lurkers. They read a lot but post little. I know this applies to me. (2) Nobody really looks at the uid of posters until a uid-war starts, so nobody notices the low-uid people unless there is a uid-war. I suspect it's actually a combination of the two.
What have I done since I joined slashdot? Changed universities, changed a few jobs, changed a few girlfriends, changed a few psychiatrists, and also changed a few passwords.:-P
"I remember how Sony's AIBO robot dog could actually hunt for its charging station when it was running out of power. On the other hand, it was often too far from the base to make it and ended up temporarily dead on the kitchen floor."
I cannot understand why people here are so gung-ho about comparing systems based on the number of consoles sold. None of us here are making any money off of them. So what if your console has more sales than mine. It doesn't matter! If I wanna boast about my console, it would be regarding its price, capabilities, and what games are available for it.
Yes, I agree that more console sales leads towards more developers targeting it. But most of the postings don't even go there. What are we, rival marketing droids?
I pity you. First you assume I'm American, when I actually live on the opposite side of the earth. Next you suggest I pronounce 'gmail' like people pronounce 'gnu' to solve the problem of people mishearing me. You made it worse. And thirdly, you assume that just because google has a hard g, then gmail MUST have it too. Of course, you could just be giving me a hard time for fun.:-)
I actually prefer @googlemail.com. Firstly, every time I say @gmail.com over the phone or even in person to someone, half the time they hear @email.com, and I have to repeat myself. Plus, I suspect @googlemail.com will be much easier to remember, since most people I know (who have email) recognize the google name. Since it seems anything to @googlemail.com will be redirected to @gmail.com (or they are the same, whatever), I'll start using @googlemail.com from now on in my documents and conversations.
People are always complaining about those who don't RTFA. Seems like now people are stopping at the headline, and not even reading the summary. Dudes, the bill requires ISP's to implement a SERVICE to FILTER out particular websites using a standard list, AT THE CUSTOMER'S REQUEST. This is no form of CENSORSHIP because it is AT THE CUSTOMER'S REQUEST. I see this is a GREAT SERVICE.
My sweet little sticky notes applet! I initially wrote it to scratch an itch, and stopped working on it after the Gnome 2.4 release. It's nice to see that it's been maintained well. Hopefully, once I return to the US, I can take care of my baby again.:) And to all of you who sent me mail about it, thanks, and sorry I haven't replied to any of them for so long.
Okay. Here's the problem I have with the tactics the Toronto police used here. Nobody's going to want to stay in the hotel room where these indiscretions took place. Who would want to sleep on a bed where a 9 year old girl was raped? The hotel owner's not to blame, so why should they be penelized?
This argument is stupid. If a murder took place in your hotel, then by golly your hotel will be all over the papers the next day. If a crazy man goes balistic with a gun in your store, then by golly your store will be all over the papers the next day. Similary, if shifty things like this occurs in your establishment and it gets found out, the press will know. Thats how the cookie crumbles, it's not your fault at all, but it's part of the many risks of running a business.
One must study viruses, how they work, and how they are written, in order to work on antiviruses. One must study spam, including how to do it, in order to work on ways to combat it. I don't understand how some people here seriously think this will lead these kids directly into the "dark side" once they graduate. They sound just like the idiots who were totally against sex education in school. Education is the best way to combat many things. Sure, maybe one student among many will dream up a new, more malicious, spam/virus technique with help from these courses. But don't we all say "security through obscurity is pointless"?
Seriously. Sometimes guys like it when their girlfriend's do something romantic for them. One of the best things my gf did for valentine's was taking me out to dinner, (opened doors for me, etc), brought me hope in a nice limo, and gave me a nice long massage while reading out a long letter she had been writing to me for the past week about why she loved me and still did.

Nope. Didn't say the person should love college or even go to it. I just said he hated it. You're the arrogant one. :-P
Yet another college hater. Sigh.

You're right! But now that we know how they do it, a revolution is around the corner! :-P
I for one welcome our new cat overlords!
Or jog.

Get over it.

Pretty much! :-P

I read the journal entry you were referring too, and it was hilarious. How could you even think that he was being serious? :P

How can you call WOW and Half-life 2 "old favorites", they are not that old.
Anyway, if i'm alone, my comfort game would be Prince of Persia and Prince of Persia 2 (the old DOS games, NOT the PS2 games).
If there are other people around, my comfort game would be Quake 3 deathmatch (and sometimes Rocket Arena 3).

I'm not that old. I just joined young.
All this hubub over a 6-digit UserId? I wonder if I can buy a new car with mine. :-P
