At a recent computer expo (COMDEX), Bill Gates reportedly compared the computer industry with the auto industry and stated, "If GM had kept up with the technology like the computer industry has, we would all be driving $25.00 cars that got 1,000 miles to the gallon".
In response to Bill's comments, General Motors issued a press release stating: If GM had developed technology like Microsoft, we would all be driving cars with the following characteristics:
1. For no reason whatsoever, your car would crash twice a day.
2. Every time they repainted the lines in the road, you would have to buy a new car.
3. Occasionally your car would die on the freeway for no reason. You would have to pull over to the side of the road, close all of the windows, shut off the car, restart it, and reopen the windows before you could continue. For some reason you would simply accept this.
4. Occasionally, executing a manoeuvre such as a left turn would cause your car to shut down and refuse to restart, in which case you would have to reinstall the engine.
5. Macintosh would make a car that was powered by the sun, was reliable, five times as fast and twice as easy to drive - but would run on only five percent of the roads.
6. The oil, water temperature, and alternator warning lights would all be replaced by a single "This Car Has Performed An Illegal Operation" warning light.
7. The airbag system would ask "Are you sure?" before deploying.
8. Occasionally, for no reason whatsoever, your car would lock you out and refuse to let you in until you simultaneously lifted the door handle, turned the key and grabbed hold of the radio antenna.
9. Every time a new car was introduced car buyers would have to learn how to drive all over again because none of the controls would operate in the same manner as the old car.
10.You'd have to press the "Start" button to turn the engine off.
If you have an existing Windows infrastructure thats works then bolting Linux onto it ok however as pointed out in the articule just shoving clients on isn't going to reduce the cost.
However if Sun are talking about it you would expect that most of their infrastructure is already UNIX so it would actually make sence. Of course I can't see all the windows workstations being replaceed as the saying goes
I've always found that when things are outsourced (or moved offshore) is that the dialog between the users and the devlopers/support etc breaks down. The idea of IT is to help the company function and for that a good dialog is needed during development etc.
There is nothing to compensate for talking round the water cooler and say "Whilst I think of it...". I hoenstly believe that the development costs might be lower but overall it will cost more on the bottom line
I've always wondered that if there were some crew memember aboard the ISS and something catastrophic happened to Earth how long could they survive? I know people on Mir survieve for over a year but I have no idea how often Mir was restocked.
However generally I agree that if we do want to survive long term (and we don't destory ourselves) then we will outgrow this planet or strip it bare forcing a move.

The UK has come up with a nice half-way house where people can opt-out of having their details published but instead their ISP/Registrar puts up their details. Should any of the details (for police etc) then the ISP can pass them on as needed. However normal people can't find out the details
Why do we need games to go faster than 25fps as that is what TV runs at and I don't see any jittering? I can understand say upto 30fps for more sensative but why do we need 60fps+?
Well basically I have a squid proxy listening on 127.0.0.1 on a remote machine with a fast uplink. I run a compress SSH tunnel from the server to my local machine. Tell Galeon to use localhost:3128 which tunnels over the compressed SSH tunnel to the server and bingo. Increased throughput for a little outlay
Well it would be nice to have something where I know all my digital photos will be safe in a few years time. I've been using RAID hard disks but will I still be able to get the data off in 5 years let alone 20. It would be nice to have some very long term storage which has some sort of guarentee
I dunno I always get worried when a company is generally in trouble and people leave. However it might in turn be a good thing as it depends on his motives if he feels that he is burnt out and wants a fresh challenge.
Of course I can think of at least 1 company where there is large reductions but the people in the top still live in the ivory tower.
I don;t know about the US but here in the UK it could be argued that children under 13 don't know the differenet between right and wrong with the appropiate judicial process of course.
If it can be shown they don't then they couldn't even be charged. Of course in this case it would be an even worse PR disaster
Prehaps it mightbe with the success or LOTR people are becoming more interested and with the general level of recent SCI-FI films (which IHMO is a bit below par) they are looking for something decent.
There are only so many science base scenarios you can have. Either aliens, end of the world or robots. Its a bit of a generalisation but with fanstasy you can create anything your imagination can concieve

It nice to see a price drop and hope it means that more people go get CD's. I mean I will admit to having a large MP3 collection but I still use CD's as the quality is vastly superior on most of the MP3's you download. On a decent stereo its easy to hear the difference. Now of course if those price cuts are passed on..
mm4 has a fix as I've just noticed from the Changelog

IT could be worse. I've seen shots where companies are writing confidential letters to customers. Now that is just stupidity
The buddie list could be seen as an honest mistake

I can't help but think this will need seriously large amounts of RAM/CPU to get it running well. Can't find anything on the sun site though

There is an alternative in the offical yahoo messanger UNIX site
