I'd bet once those are accounted for the PS3 is even ahead of the XBox. As for the Profitability of the PS3 Sony has had a 8 or 10 years in a row at an operational loss for its gaming division. For the end of the 2012 physical year it looks like that has a 2 or 3 billion loss. That's where the "It's questionable if MS and Sony have really come out ahead of this or not given the systems cost".

When you look at the actual number it looks like each and every system took a nose dive some time after April 25, 2011. I wonder what that was. Oh, I know, that was the Wii U announcement date. What moron is going to buy a Wii knowing that the Wii U will be out soon and cause the Wii to have another price drop. Ether you're saving for the Wii U launch or your waiting for a price drop.

Can't blame that on Japan. Sales were down like 73%. You don't think that has ANY part in the fact that they lost $950 MILLION

Yes I can. Try reading something relevant. I mean really, how is a supply chain disruption not supposed to kill your margin. Honestly, if the tsunami never happened Nintendo's little misstep with the 3DS price point would have been completely erased by the end of the year. They made a little mistake at launch and they corrected it properly. That'll teach them not to listen to the E3 reporters and raise their price point 100 bucks. The tsunami also stopped game development for just about every Japanese developer. That little side effect is only now trickling down since game development take over year so the 20% drop in released games can be tied to it and the Wii U announcement. Since who's going to develop for the Wii when they know the Wii U is just around the corner.

Nintendo has been playing this game for a while now and every time people like you come out and claim they are dead and no longer relevant. The 360 and PS3 haven't sold as many units and Nintendo was able to make actual profit off of their system right at launch.

It's questionable if MS and Sony have really come out ahead of this or not given the systems cost. The only real reason why MS and Sony aren't releasing a new system this year is that they still haven't made up for all the losses they incurred from the last round.

If Nintendo ever fixes its issue with 3rd party developers then Sony and MS will have to worry since that is the only thing making their system relevant enough to stay in the market. Their 1st party development is lack luster and Nintendo can practically print money without the aid of 3rd parties.

They have only had ONE year with an operational loss. Look at what's happened in Japan in the last year tsunami/nuclear disaster, Every major industry in Japan has been in the red.

To add to your flaimbait. You have to be retarded and ignorant of the history to make the claim that Nintendo will be irrelevant. They've ether been irrelevant for the last 20 year or they haven't been and probably won't be.

The Part about assaulting their User Base was actually directed at KoA, but I can see how you thought I was attacking Blizzard. Writing nice clear html on slashdot is for crazies. Yes the video game Industry was considered Recession Proof up until 2008. Just like the Alcohol Industry. Do some research and you'll see that they never actually were hit by any of the recessions up until then. A Slump is actually different then a recession. In the 80's the "slump" was Atari imploding. Again do some research and you'll see. That ET video game nearly killed them.

It is pretty sophisticated stuff. Clearly has gone over your head for most if not all of your life.

You've made the mistake that every publish and dev that's railed against Rentals and Used Sales. You're assumption is that those buyers would buy your game at the regular retail prices. The honest truth is that they won't and never will. Back when you could expect a regular price drop in a Video Game these people just waited a couple of months for the first wave of price drops. EA and others have gotten so good at making sure they don't flood the market so that regular price drops are rare. When a game has been out for a year and is still being sold at 60$ their is a problem. This behavior took sales away, and made rentals and used games more valued. Between the Price Hike and Supply Control the Publishers have squeezed the maximum amount of profit out of the system. Any attempt to squeeze more just pushes more people to Used and Rentals. If you actually want to learn something go lookup the economics of the Car Industry and see how it uses the Lease and Used markets.

Yea, no used game sales for PC titles and have you noticed how PC game sales have been in the toilet for nearly 20 years? Diablo may have broken some PC records, but Its a drop in the bucket to what Consoles expect to make regularly. Million unit sellers on the PC are very rare.
That little trick they did could also be what cost them sales, but you can't actually measure sales lost because the user-base decided that they weren't going to take it. It breads negative sentiment for the brand.
Lets see if you understand even a little bit of economics. Game Stop puts about 1 billion a year into the hands of Gamers. This is based off of their Reported Profits from Used Game Sales. That 1 Billion then goes to ether New games or other Used games. You might think that the Used game sale costs the Developer something, but in Reality it freed up some cash so that the Gamer who traded in the New Game first can buy another New Game. If he didn't that would reduce the Speed of how many games in total that they would be able to buy in a Year. The same logic applies to the Used Car Market. Stopping Used game sales could end up causing the New game sales to contract by 1 to 2 billion dollars since it doesn't just stop the 1 billion from getting into the gamers hands but also puts a stop to the over all flow of games. The overall market would have a contraction of over 5 billion since it would kill the 3 Billion in GameStop Used games and contract the New game market as well. If you're goal is to kill the industry this is exactly how you should do it. I've heard these excuses before. I'm old enough to remember Nintendo complain about Block Buster Rentals. Up until recently they've had a Recession Proof Industry, and the lost Sales the last few years is clearly due to the Recession, and has nothing to do with Used Games. The Profits from used games can also be tied to their price hike. Nintendo Warned them that it was a bad idea to increase the cost of development too much, and look at what it got them. A price hike that has caused Used Games to become preferable and made it so they no longer have a Recession Proof Industry. And this year we're in a flip where People arn't buying much because New Consoles are around the corner and new AAA games are being put onto systems that aren't out yet so supply is contracting. It happens every Console Cycle.

It matters to each and every player in the XBox and PS3 market that ether wanted to trade it in or buy it used because it devalued the game. That one little trick caused the price of it used to drop faster which also means less trade in value (47.99 instead of 54.99). Developers and Publishers want to think that these hurt their sales. In truth they are what are driving their sales. Without the economic flow from the used game sales the new game sales would be a smaller pie.
