This has been Palms biggest problem in recent years I think. They can't seem to decide if they're making Palms for business customers, or consumers, or both.

Sony has (had) this great thing going making shit-hot Palms with all the latest features for bleeding-edge Palm junkies, while their lower models had all the cool new features (for their price range) for Joe Consumer. Palm has this "5x-m500" reputation of building nice, solid, business minded Palms, but since the majority of new features to come out on Palms the past couple years have been consumer-related (cameras, MP3, etc), Palm has been in an identity crisis.

The 4210 IDS we have is basically a re-branded Dell rack mount. I needed a 256 memory upgrade for it to run the 4.x OS update, which luckly we got for free under maintenance contract, but if not would have cost us like $500. And I installed the memory, I know for a fact it wasn't anything more than a genereric DIMM stick.

  13. Re:Interesting move for 3Com... on 3com to Compete with Cisco · · Score: 2, Funny

I'll have you know that 3Com's line of routers have a default username/password of 3Com/oakland. So clearly they are a seperate and complete product from Cisco's line of routers, and there is no chance whatsoever that any of Cisco's code was used to create the 3Com router code.

  14. Re:30-50% less? on 3com to Compete with Cisco · · Score: 5, Interesting

True story: We have a Cisco VPN (don't know model off hand) that we needed to order an extra 256 meg of RAM for. We call up our Cisco rep, and they get a price quote from Cisco of $9600. For a 256 piece of RAM. The damn VPN itself only cost like $12k. So our Cisco rep does some more calling around, trying to find out what the story is with that price, and finally comes back with a price of $450 or something like that.

So obviously this is much better and we're all relieved, and then it dawns on us: Who else other than Cisco can buy PC133 sticks of RAM in bulk for probably $10 a pound, stick a "Cisco Certified" sticker on them, then sell it to you for $450 a stick, and make you feel like you're getting a good deal?

  20. You know on Chrono Ressurrection Forced to Cease & Desist · · Score: 3, Insightful

Not trying to be an asshole here or anything, but I really have to wonder why anyone associated with this project ever thought it would end in any way other than this.

Chrono Cross, while not a direct sequal to Trigger, is still based on the same game universe (sort of, lots of time travel and dimensional weirdness going on in both games stories), and is just now coming up on it's 5th anniversary. This isn't like someone trying revive dead franchises like Star Control or whatever. Square still owns the rights to the "Chrono Universe", and it would not be suprising in the least to see another Chrono-based game from them in the very near future.

Added into this is that Square already has a history themselves of reviving their older Final Fantasy games with updated graphics, new CGI movies, and other stuff. In fact Chrono Trigger itself was part of the Final Fantasy Chronicles package along with Final Fantasy IV.

In other words, there's just no way Square could allow this project to continue, seeing as how the Chrono Universe is still an active viable property. I'm sure people associated with Chrono Ressurrection were only motivated by their love for the original Chrono Trigger game, but come on: what did you expect would happen?

  21. No, Star Trek should not die on Should Star Trek Die? · · Score: 1

There's absolutely no reason Star Trek cannot inspire good, intelligent sci-fi, even after all the over-exposure.

A TV or movie is only as good as the people in charge of writing and/or producing it. Shit-can Berman and Braga and everyone else permanently associated with the franchise these days, and give it to someone who actually knows a little bit about sci-fi. Get some scripts from up-and-coming sci-fi writers. Sure, you'll probably get a lot of shit, but you'll also get the best Star Trek scripts seen in 10 years.

The point being, it's not the concept of Star Trek itself that's the problem, it's the people delivering it to us. Get the right people, and Star Trek can be exciting, interesting, and relevant once again.
