Lots of stores won't take opened cds (or any other media) back other than in exchange for an identical item.

Which is ironic, since the main reason they do this is to prevent you from copying the media and returning it for a refund, something this CD supposedly prevents. Try convincing the manager at Best Buy of this, though.

  5. Deciphering the Marketing Speak on ReplayTV 4000 Series Shares TV Over Net · · Score: 4, Funny

    From their FAQ:

    Q. How does ReplayTV use my Ethernet connection?
    A. ReplayTV uses the high-speed Ethernet connection to connect to your home network. This means that your ReplayTV is now connected to your PC and to the Internet. If you have more than one ReplayTV, they'll be connected to each other, too. This means, you can now share recorded programming between multiple ReplayTV's within your home, access new television content through your PC via the Internet, and even share programs with friends who also own ReplayTV 4000s. The Ethernet connection can also be used to transfer digital photos from your PC to your ReplayTV and once on your ReplayTV, you can watch digital slide shows on your television.

OK, this stops just short of saying, "Yes, you can record all those Simpson reruns on ReplayTV, then copy them to the hard drive on your PC for archival/editing/sharing with the entire world", but it seems like that would be a logical use as well. Then again, logic rarely plays a part in copyright/IP law. What do you guys think, would that sort of thing be possible with this unit, or do they have some built-in protection against it (i.e., only copying to other ReplayTV units)? And if so, how long before the MPAA comes a-knockin?

  9. The Butter PDA is a Fake! on Get Your New Handheld...in Butter. · · Score: 5, Funny

Yes, that's right, it's a fake. Proof? Consider the following:

    - The picture shows the words "Palm VII x" across the top, but there is no antenna visible on the right side of the unit.

    - The unit itself seems to be out of proportion with real VII x's by nearly 7 millimeters width.

    - The "Login" button on the front screen is missing the "send information" icon (looks like waves moving out from a point) that is the staple of almost all Palm Portal online applications.

    - The front panel buttons seem to be positioned wrong. The real up and down buttons on VII x's are centered approximately 3.5 mm farther down.

    - The "cradle" this unit is sitting in is cleary missing the Palm logo on the front, as well as any visible HotSync button.

    - The entire unit seems to be yellow in color and made of butter. This may be a result of a bad picture, but real VII x's are made of plastic and are black in color, with the distinctive "Palm green" monochrome screen.

Cleary this is the work of someone very skilled in Photoshop. I wonder if this is a retaliation by Palm after the recent FCC screwup with their new i705, to try and generate more interest in the VII x? Or perhaps it is the work of Palm-knockoff pirate organizations in Tailand or China, eager to flood the PDA hungry US market with cheap, imitation Palms.

Of course, geeks of the world will know better, but the point will be to confuse the average consumer, make them think AMD has something to hide.

If AMD uses some other form of model numbering, the first question out of any consumers mouth will be "What speed does it run at?" anyway. Of course sales people will have to tell them, and your back at square one.

    - Many lawyers would be unable bill $600 per hour, and might even be forced to lower their rates all the way down to $400 per hour!

    - Sales of over-prices SUV's and luxury sedans would not increase!

    - Wall Street investment bankers would be forced to cancel plans for that 3rd beach house in Kenebunkport!
