Not to be rude, but yeah right. Like anyone at the DOJ is going to touch this with a 10 foot poll right now. Not only do we have a president in power right now who could give a rats ass how badly Big Business fucks over the little man, but the DOJ knows full well that if they try and concentrate on anything besides terrorism for the next 12 months, they'll have Big Business pundits all over them on CNN and such, asking why they're messing with this kind of stuff, when "American lives are at risk".

It's wrong, but it's a fact of life right now.

Is this the worlds biggest DNS server? Meta DNS? Seriously, though, how many companies who snatch up an .info or whatever are going to bother to create a new web site specifically for that domain?

I read somewhere the other day that Lucas has said their won't be any original trilogy DVD's until at least 2005, after Episode 3 is done. And your right, they'll probably be those "improved" versions at that, with even more stuff thrown in if this Ep1 DVD is any indication.

It's too bad Lucas has apparently decided his original work is crap, and has become obsessed with what his big machines up there on the ranch can do. A boxed set of the original trilogy, in it's original form, would probably be one of the best selling DVD sets of all time.

Dammit George, I don't care if you originally wanted yet another big-headed alien in the cantina, or you can see the strings on the Tie Fighters in Frame 2045-78. Give me Digitally remastered, Dolby 5.1/DTS Star Wars, Empire, and Jedi, and you'll be the Geek Hero you once were.

If this were simply an arbitrary decision by Clear Channel to not play these songs anymore, then it would be OK, but clearly that's not the case. This is a reactionary move to save their stations and themselves nasty-grams from upset people who happened to hear "Learn to Fly" on the radio at the wrong moment.

Which is of course why this list is utterly ridiculous. As if these were the only songs that could be upset people about the attack. People hear what they want to hear from music, you can't protect them from it.

Still, it's not something to get upset over. There's no way songs like Imagine and Stairway to Heaven can now be banned forever from all Clear Channel stations. It's just a temporary CYA.

  18. Re:What can be done about terrorism? on More On Tragedy · · Score: 2

I've heard the Air Marshall idea propsed a lot, but personally I think it's unworkable. Reasons?

    - It's incredibly dangerous to have any firearm on a plane, no matter who it belongs to. I don't care if you hire Chuck Norris, if a terrorist organization puts 5 of it's men on a plane, chances are they're getting that gun, or something else bad is going to happen. You don't want bullets flying around an airplane. And if you don't give the air marshall a gun, he's just another passenger, who perhaps knows a few self-defense techniques. Hardly the kind of protection you want against a terrorist with a weapon.

    - It will cost a bundle. I know that sounds very callous right now, but think about how much money it would take to keep an air marshall on every flight within the United States at any one time. You would need literally thousands of air marshalls, perhaps even tens of thousands. To say nothing about the support structures (computer tracking systems, training, background checks, etc) needed to keep such an operation up and running logistically. And of course that doesn't count international flights, which would only add to those logistics. The costs would be tremendous, and would either drive the cost of flying sky high (no pun intended), or require a massive tax increase if the government were expected to foot the bill.

    - People wouldn't like it. It might be well recieved at first, but once shock of this event wear's off, it will be seen by most as just another flying inconvenience. Most people wouldn't like the idea of firearms on board their flight. Also, an air marshall would presumably have the authority or even responsibility to search anyone getting on the plane, which is sure to be ill-recieved.

Your right, there are no perfect solutions here.

You don't write down "Over throw evil government" on a To-Do list along with "Pick up bread and milk". It's not an easy thing to do. It takes weapons, manpower, money, luck, and time. Particularly when your government is a hard line one.

Ordinary people in Afghanistan are struggling just to survive every day. They might be shot if their wife doesn't hide her face in the right way. Their entire homes might be burned to the ground, while their government sits back and does nothing about it.

These people did not ask for an oppressive, evil government, it was thrust upon them. It's wrong to punish them for not having the resources to do something about it.

When someone dies in a car crash despite having their seat belt on, car companies don't throw up their hands and say, "Well, clearly these seatbelt things are useless, someone still died! Take them all out".

Airport security and metal detectors in buildings do serve a purpose, to deter criminal activity, and hopefully catch people in the act. No security system in the world can be made to handle every concievable possibility or threat. That does not mean, however, that we should just abandon all security and leave ourselves open to attacks from every minor or not-as-serious threat.
