Because a common problem with a site not displaying correctly is that old content has been cached. One of the settings that you can set the cache to be checked is "Once per session," and a session can be many days log.
It's an easy thing to do that "caches" some common errors.
Teh best (and I don't say I ever did it) is to make a CD that consists of 5 minutes of silence, and the something like "Bitch School" or "Hell's Bells". Or even better, grab one of their "Best Buy Demo CDs" and "edit" it.
Find the control deck. One deck is usually running all the speakers, subs, etc.
Put your CD in. You now have 5 minutes to turn up the volume, and turn on as many speakers as you can. It is possible to get more than one pair at a time to turn on with selective glue or tape application.
Now wander to the other part of the store and wait for the Audio Assault.:)
By raising costs to your competitors, you reduce the profit they can make. If their profit is reduced, then they can't spend as much on research and development of new products.
This allows you to get a foothold, or in Google's case, to continue to stay ahead of the pack.
I've often felt that M$ would be well served to release a new OS based on an entirely new codebase... get a group of developers that have never seen Windows source code, only the GUI and let them rewrite it without backwards.
It has been done. This company has done basically what you want.
And you can get the major software (Office, MSN, etc) for it, including Photoshop!
And therein lies the issue. If Microsoft broke backwards compatibility in a large manner, then there'd be no reason NOT to go to OS X or Linux or something else.
No one has mentioned a big reason for backwards compatibility:
Reduction of Confusion.
So you have this PlayStation, and this PlayStation 2, and most people will assume that what worked on the first version will work on the second.
But going from a Super Nintendo to a N64 is enough of a difference to not expect that they'll work together.
Combine this with the fact that there isn't any visible difference between the media of the two units, and you'll see that XboX2 not working with XboX games will hurt it. Customers will be cuss-tomers.
But, then again, they already are.

Uh. Car battery big. Computer draw little. Car battery last long time.
In reality, if it was done right, it could last a hella long time. I've run a Mini-ITX computer from a dead battery (no charge enough to turn the engine over), and it ran for 8 hours. A fully charged battery could easily last multiple days.
It's even worse now: Update: 06/21 15:36 GMT by S: An MSNBC story confirms that SpaceShipOne 'glided safely back to Earth, landing back at the Mojave Airport' around 8.15AM PST.
Talk about having to do timezone changes in your head!
That's an important thing that many people don't recognize as necessary. You have to have emergency shutoffs on anything that is automatic!
In this case, I bet that some automated software shut the power off because the payment wasn't received. If it had been humans, they could easily be told to wait or contact the customer, but a machine will just do what it was programmed to do.
Actually, if you work out some of the costs, it gets pretty scary! For example, there are about one million homes in San Diego County (Ref: US Census. The median price is $200,000 (probably more now), which means that San Diego County is worth $200,000,000,000! And that doesn't include business properties, etc.
In reality, companies are still quite small compared to countys, let alone countries.
Though some such as Coca Cola or Mc Donald's get pretty big.....
Ah, I see. I wonder, though. The main killer of the smaller sites is that you'll want to change someday.
After all, the main reason people use hotmail, etc is that they can keep the same email address even when moving to a different provider. Most ISPs provide web access to their mail servers, but if you change ISP you'd like to avoid changing email address.
Of course, those in the know fork out the $15 a year for the domain name that remains the same.....

My preferred method of transportation gets 1.2 gallons per mile....
Which is better than a hybrid car for certain numbers of people.....

I guess the Beatles would have that one down.
After all, everything just means I have to buy the White Album again, right?

If Apple was putting out a console
SSH! (And I don't mean no secure protocol!)
That's the big secret! Keep quiet, you.

Supposedly the hard parts are going to be the hard drive and the graphics.
But the graphics is solveable, the hard drive isn't.
Wouldn't we be suprized if they released a "docking" station that would connect the XBOX to XBOX2?
Or maybe they don't want no h4x0rs playing on their new toy.
I can't believe that people mod this interesting.
Read the D#$%$@#M links, people! You've been meta-trolled!
Ideuts.

They're saying that it will sound better than using a cassette adapter or an FM transmitter.
And that, I believe.
Most planes have this in first class, and almost all new planes have this at every seat.
However, it is difficult to get permission to retrofit older planes, and therefore is not cost worthy.
But as the planes continue to fall out of the sky, the replacements will have this kind of power.
More importantly, what will Apple call this?
iPower? iBattery? iHindenburg? iBall?
In a press release from Texas, John Carmack noted that Doom III was being delayed another month to "punish those Californian dweebs."
Half-Life 2 was said to be available........on the moon

I posted a clickable link to pass my POST (Posting on Slashdot Test).
Uh, did you click the single link?
He's a professional test pilot, and is being paid money to ride this thing into space.
And he hopes he won't have to do much, but I'd guess that he's much more able to pilot a space glider back to Earth than anyone here......
I dual boot with pride.
Except OS 9 is being booted very often anymore.....
