    ouch, indeed... Never considered it until last summer when I got back from a 6month trip around S-E Asia (rather skint) and could not find a job for 3 long scary months. was a big downer for ones self-esteem as well. Found one in the end - with less pay, but damn much more interesting work (c++, rather than web server scripting and some db stuff). I do think though the quality of your work task comes first, the pay later. (rather less pay go to work with a smmile in my face, than earning more and hate every moment of it)

    AWT uses the native widgets of the OS. Also, have you ever heard of JNI? that's Java Native Interface. let's you go for the metal, well as much as the underlying OS allows you. Of course you'll loose the cross platform feature of Java, but then again, it might not be needed for all apps.

    as said in the oter post the spec is open and free. the only thing you'd have to pay for is using the name 'Java'.

    Netscape did earn a fair amount of money on selling their browser, which, wasn't free in the beginning. (yes private ppl could download and 'evaluation copy', but most companies I know of paid for it).
    So what does MS do? they start to give their browser away for free, using money from other sources, sources which Netscape didn't have really. They also spent tons of money in order to catch up with netscape, why do you think they did that? To be nice to all their users? No they wanted netscape erased off the map. Steal their revenue stream by giving away a similar product for free. Of course netscape couldn't cope in the long run...

    Funny, I still run my good old PII400 back home. yeah, bit slow while compiling, but otherwise it's just fine. Got a Athlon 800MHz at work, pretty much enough for all my tasks..
    nope, don't play games whatsoever...
    Yes, I'm thinkning of getting a faster box home, but wouldn't buy anything faster than a 1300+ or a 1600+ really.

    Better than shielding would be to create some kind of magnetic field around the spacecraft - should do the trick against radiation.

    Sorry, wrong, as pointed out Mars got enought grav. pull to sustain a atmosphere. However, Mars lacks a an magnetic field like Earth. This have allowed for the solar wind to slowly, bit by bit, blow the martian atmosphere away.

    startup time and bloat is mostly due to the XUL based UI. Gecko in it self is damn quick.

    If you want to decrease startup time just preload the app.

    Mozilla might have taken far longer than expected, but it was hardly failed, AOLs switch to Gecko would be a proof of that.
    Gecko is also one of the most standards compliant engines around today

    Don't like AOL 'dirty' games with Mozilla?? Welcome to the real world, at least Mozilla is open source, you can always fork the source and do your own stuff if you think the current mozilla is tainted in some way by AOL

    Well, europe have had it's share if sickies running aropund with guns lately. first in france (the guy who shot down all those politicians and then the german kid who blasted away in his school before turning the gun to himself.

    Not too sure Platoon and SPR was that about gloryfing war. Can't argue over Rambo though! ;-)

    But yes, I agree... both weird and sad that people seem more scared about sex and love than violence.

    If the sail is reflecting the photons will bounce of in an angle and giving you it momentum in an angle relkated to the ship thus giving you the ability to control your direction. You could however never sail towards the sun, you could slingshot around a planet further away from you and then retract your sail (or have a nonreflecting front of the sails) and just go on your momentum towards the sun

    Well anyway, I was more thinking of having all object already on the X Server an x-client just telling what object(widget) thay want and were.

    Don't know much about X if I should be honest, but does X compress the info it send over? Would that be of any advantage?

    Interfaces was an idea taken from Smalltalk IIRC. since multiple inheritance can open a can of worms. The java ppl decided to go for a cleaner, albeit more restrictive solution. Yes, some people though they were wrong, but there tradeoffs with everything.
    Interfaces are just like pure virtual classes under c++. I never had a problem really with java's OO model but then again, I not very hardcore OO. Old c programmer...

    seriously, most of what I've seen has been 'in house' stuff.
    would say go to http://www.sodaplay.com, site seems to be down for the moment, but they got some nice small things, at least proving java can handle physics model with no problem.
    Most problem with java is because of swing - whic h IMHO need some serious work (not sure if it's been done - only doing c++ nowadays)
    If you want big programs you got NetBeans (SUN's Forte IDE) and JBuilder from Borland, yepp, not as fast as it's c equiv. but still workable.
