If it's not a fine, then it's not subject to the constitutions prohibition on excessive fines. I think I'd rather it be a fine. Perhaps this settlement isn't a fine, but the judgment you'd get if you took it to court would definitely be a fine.

What are you talking about? Customs agents can open your mail and copy all the papers and effects too. When crossing the border they can open your wallet and copy every scrap of paper they find. The problem isn't that the law considers computing devices different from papers, it's that the courts have fabricated a border exemption to the 4th amendment.

  20. Re:Fear on Bruce Schneier vs. the TSA · · Score: 1

Just because it's against the law doesn't make it wrong. A just punishment will fit the crime. Neither smoking pot nor flying hurts anyone. Getting your balls cupped by a gov't employee is humiliating yes, but does not not compare to incarceration.

BTW, administrative polices don't supercede the law. An act from Congress prohibiting this would stop it quickly, so you do have the same amount of recourse you ever have.

Look to see more bullshit agencies created by executive order, to illegally search - i mean safety screen - you in other venues as well. After all, a Phish concert certainly is a decent terrorist target, right?

It's already happening. Recently a Grateful Dead cover band had their property seized because they failed to provide enough security. I've been there several times and it was, without a doubt, the safest concert environment I have ever been to. There were no friskings because there was no need for it.

No it didn't. Fear mongers have been chipping away at our freedoms since day 1. Getting groped at the airport isn't any more outrageous than getting jailed for smoking pot for instance.

Normal people have 1-2 hours a day of free time. If you can't find 1-2 hours a day to do something you like, then you need to rearrange your life. If you have 1-2 hours a day of free time and video games don't make the cut, that's your choice. And what would be the point of cutting out tons of gameplay for someone who doesn't actually like video games? If you really want to play games where they've cut out all the combat and difficulty, just watch TV. There's no difference between that and a game that's just one long cut scene with no grinding which is what you seem to want.

I personally stopped playing Dark Cloud 2 because simply put, I realized it simply had too much stuff and it was starting to feel like work, start up the game, grind some weapon XP, repeat. Not to mention, the spheda, the collection (and leveling up) of monster transformations, the customization of Steve, the fishing, the fish racing, the medals, collecting the additional NPCs...do I even have to mention the 100 level bonus dungeon that they put in there, on top of the HUGE main game.

You know, you didn't have to do all that stuff. Focus on the main quest, and only do the side quests you enjoy.

  25. Re:Some of us have a life, you know on Why Don't We Finish More Games? · · Score: 2, Insightful

It's not that there's not enough time. Collecting shit for the sake of collecting shit is the worst thing to happen to video games ever as far as I can tell. Give me all the time in the world, and I would never collect all the bananas in Donkey Kong, never collect all the Skulltulas in Zelda, or all the hidden packages in GTA. It's just _not fun_. It's not even close to pretending to be a simulation of something that used to be fun. It's tedious, it's frustrating, it's *work*. No thank you.
