Who the hell modded this insightful? Anyone who uses the phrase "liberal left," and then calls Slashdot a "party," is anything but insightful. This doesn't rise above an ideological thumbing of the nose, with all the insights that entails.
students thousands of miles from Shanghai or Beijing will be able to access online course materials from M.I.T. or Harvard and fully educate themselves
That sounds great... until you think it through. Besides connected villages, this would also requires students who have...
Advanced English, including technical vocabulary.
A high-school education. A *good* high-school education.
Reliable power and Internet connections.
Consistent and extensive access to a computer hooked up to the net. A printer might be nice, too.
Considerable time to study.
Exceptional levels of self-motivation.
No problems with the government, which will inevitably monitor their activities.
No problems with family, which might or might not think this is a good use of one's time.
Etc.
I'm all about the rural poor becoming educated in China and everywhere, but it's going to take more than access to Google to do it.
This fish hunts land-borne insects... like the archer fish. But it leaves the water... like the mudskipper. And TFA doesn't even indicate that it breathes air, like the lungfish (or the mudskipper).
I agree with what you're saying, but I have to ask... am I the only person who's been to an aquarium or seen the BBC's series "The Blue Planet?" I've known for years that lungfish and mudskippers can breathe air as well as water, and I learned from the BBC series that there are fish that walk along the bottom of the ocean.
Why is it that these things come as such as surprise? Science has known this stuff for decades. We don't need to look for missing links - they aren't missing at all.

What about "have a filmed?" Is that British thing? Because I'd hate to think it was a typo that got past the crack editorial staffs of both the Sun and Slashdot.
Let me chime in with my "me too." Editors edit. Yes, primarily for content, but also mechanics. It is definitely not too much to ask that content vetted for public consumption be inspected and if necessary, corrected. Speaking as a past and future editor myself, I'm mortified when spelling errors get past me. Errors distract from the content. This is the point of having editors in the first place, so that the content can be evaluated on its own merits, not those of the the medium.
Yes, I know not everyone is a great speller. Yes, I know spelling skills are not related to general intelligence, or specific knowledge about the material in the submission. That's why not everyone is given the title of "editor."

As a web designer for a magazine most Slashdot readers will know of, I recently wrote my boss to ask if I could skip testing my site on IE5-Mac entirely. So, no extra Windows box for testing for me. I have a Windows box around, but that's because it belongs to my girlfriend(!), not because I need it for testing.:)
No, the parent is right. In those days, there were only gays acts, not gay people. By extension, the same thing went for straight people. People were just people, and their sex acts did not define them. There's definitely something to be said for that.
It's a battle between those who don't view commercials (which means less money for advertising slots), and the need for the television company to make money.
And the winner is... those of us who don't watch television at all.
Not to be a spelling Nazi in Spanish, but that's "Qué será, será."
Que tengas un buen día.
Anyone care to calculate how much force is needed to do it?
A whole bunch. In round figures.
Who the hell modded this insightful? Anyone who uses the phrase "liberal left," and then calls Slashdot a "party," is anything but insightful. This doesn't rise above an ideological thumbing of the nose, with all the insights that entails.
Won't someone think of the children?? Oh, wait... someone did!
Senator Sensenbrenner (the same politician that sponsored the infamous Real ID Act)
This is also the same guy whose immigration bill brought Latinos into the streets in unprecedented numbers to protest.
That's some record this guy is racking up!
It's a simple spelling error. Try the real site, http://www.remembersegregation.org, and you'll get better results.
And assuming you don't mind heavy Flash usage, it is a nice site.
How could anyone be a Microsoft fanboy? There hasn't been a single innovation out of Redmond in the life of the company
More to the point, how could anyone be a fanboy of the system used on 90+% of desktops?
"Yeah, I'm in the overwhelming majority! Now that's elite! Cutting edge! Top shelf!"

Somebody clarify how this is news.

It tastes like burning, too.
in fact I just got back from a 3 week trip to Eurasia
Ah, that explains why I haven't seen you post as often as the next three most frequent posters combined, like I'm used to.
And aren't we at war with Eurasia? Oh wait, that was Eastasia.
Then again, I suppose "Marg" got past both, so....
What about "have a filmed?" Is that British thing? Because I'd hate to think it was a typo that got past the crack editorial staffs of both the Sun and Slashdot.
They're crazy. Everyone knows nano is a text editor.
In Soviet Russia, I must be new here!

I can't give you skin with chlorophyll, but I can give you this.
That's "blogazine." As in Blog A Zine. It's two, two, two buzzwords in one!
Let's see...
Brides and grooms.
Boys and unmarried girls.
Judges and murderers.
Thieves and travellers.
Brewers and the Greek Catholic Church.

But he wouldn't have had much interest in her (except as a model he was commissioned to paint), as he was gay.
As for the article... I think these folks just need a hobby.
