I think the part of creating an installation package that's difficult is all of the registry edits you need to do in Windows. Of course, if you wrote your code well (such as Apache or MySQL), you wouldn't need any registry edits (unless you want to create services for these applications). Almost any good piece of Linux software can simply be untarred into any folder and work (unless you like to compile it yourself, of course).
If you've read anything about this, you would have seen that this is a Microsoft developer who created Wix in his free time. Anything you create on your own time, no matter who you work for, is not the intellectual property of your business; it is yours to do what you want with it. It looks like that is exactly what this guy and his buddies are doing. Sure, it's an app designed to run in a Windows environment, but is it the IP of Microsoft? I haven't really found anything that says it is, I just see that this guy works for MS.
So, is it really MS that is finally putting out open source, or is it just one of their employees with a sight for the future?
*EVERY* OS has had/comes with/includes a media player.
Not *EVERY* OS. Gentoo doesn't at least. Neither does Familiar linux. I sure can get a media player for each of them, but it definatly does not come with it. I'm sure there are a lot more than just that.
they would start development on their second OS right now. I don't live in Europe, but from what I read and hear on IRC, I get the feeling that M$ is not going to win any appeals, and eventually will be forced to sell their cut down OS. It would save them time and money. Why drag it out in court, when you're probably going to lose anyway?
everyone who wants to play games buys a PS2/Xbox/Gamecube. Everyone playing a console game has the same hardware and game developers don't need to dumb it down for the low end machines. I play my console online almost every night and I enjoy far more than an pc game I've ever played. I can even hook up a usb keyboard/mouse and use it with fps games just like I'm used to from pc games. You think when I finally get my copy of Final Fantasy XI that I'll be playing on a Windoze box? Nope. PS2 with a keyboard and mouse is where I'll be at. And I'll never have to tweek a setting. If you've got $300+ to spend on a video card for your pc, you're far better off buying a game console; it'll save you cash.
Where I work, almost all of the big whigs have spelling errors in their emails.. no matter who they are addressed to. There are a lot of two finger typing execs. Just my two cents.
That could possible be the dumbest thing I have heard all year. Microsoft should not buy anything. They ruin nearly everything they touch. They know how to do one thing.. marketing. It's all they've ever really been good at.
PS1 and PS2 are not junk, and it is quite sad that you try to compare them to DOS/Windows (which is ironic, because you support M$ earlier in your post). They may not have the hardware like Xbox does, but they don't need it. They are very good and efficient at what they do. M$ writes code that needs huge honking machines to run on; the rest of the world doesn't.
Why weren't people so angry when people were playing GTA1 or GTA2? As I remember, the games were pretty much the same thing; pull people out of their car, shoot them, take off with their car and continue your mission to join a gang. The graphics may not have been quite as detailed, but the ideas were the same. I think ideas of violence are more dangerous than the illustrations of violence.
"Why would you have NetBIOS enabled on your network adapter that is connected to the Internet? Are you planning on sharing your Windows printer with 1,000,000 other people in the world?"
What makes you think that every Windows computer will have more than one network adapter? Do you even know what you are talking about?
"..Several concepts from Word are a part of every aspect of ANY OS you are using today. From the concept of selecting a word with your keyboard or mouse and then deleting it, changing it's font, etc to drag and drop of text and real-time spellchecking. The whole WYSIWYG UI of select and modify were introduced in Word. So next time you select a word with your mouse or keyboard and delete it, copy it, or change its font, say thanks to the MS Word developers.:).."
You could do these types of things in the DOS version of Word Perfect.. long before MS Word.
"...turn off NetBIOS over TCP/IP for the Internet Connection..."
What good is a Windows server if it doesn't use Netbios over TCP/IP? I know I don't want any of my Windows boxes using any other protocol than TCP/IP, so how exactly will they communicate with each other? How will Active Directory work? That solution only works for a single standalone DESKTOP, not SERVER.
OS X? Not sure if anyone has said it yet, and I am certainly not going to read the previous 450+ meessages to find out. From all the screen shots I have seen, it looks like M$ is (once again) taking some of it's gui ideas from Apple. The interface reminds me somewhat of Aqua. They have once again decided to keep the Windows taskbar, but have removed "Start" from the Start button. The rest of what I have seen looks very similar to OS X, but changed enough to be called a Microsoft original (yeah, cause they are sooooo original).
I can answer that you fool. iTunes is probably the best mp3 player on the market. And it would be sooooooooooo easy to port to Linux (or BSD or whatever) because the original version ran on a BSD kernel. Hell, given the source code, most of the Linux community could probably get it working on their own.
I use the ScrLk key to make my Belkin KVM switch change displays. If I hit it twice (it beeps) then hit the up/down key, it goes to the next/previous display. And I can even hit a number rather than an arrow key and it goes straight to the terminal plugged into the number key I hit. And if I hit the space bar after it beeps I am presented with an OSD for the KVM switch.
If I hit Ctrl then hit Esc (not to be confused with pressing them at the same time) on my Black Box KVM switch, I get an OSD that allows me to navigate to the terminal I want (very nice when you have 30 servers on KVMs).
I (and probably a lot of other/. people) would probably be one of the "lucky" few to see a search counter, but I hit Google from probably 5 different IP addresses daily. So the results cannot be too accurate. I'd rather not have to log into Google to perform a search either though...
"...the letter points that private individuals who register a domain name expose their names, home addresses, home phone numbers, and home e-mail addresses to the world..."
I can get most of that information from a phone book.
fuck is this world coming to??? SCO making false allegations about IBM's relations with the Linux community, SCO stock rising, IBM appears to be doing NOTHING about this?!?!?!?! I think it's time I find religion and start praying!
So, they put Linux on the desktop, only to run VMWare with a Windows sessions. Sounds to me like they have a lot of extra cash to pay for licensing. VMWare licenses AND Windows licenses?? Why would they do that when they could SAVE MONEY by simply installing Windows. If they really need to run Linux apps, build one (or two or three..) Linux servers and use Putty to tunnel an X session.
Complete waste of money and poor planning on this one..

When was the last time YOU searched using Yahoo?? Yahoo uses Google... every search you do from Yahoo says "Search Technology provided by Google" at the bottom.
. . how long until it's ported to Linux?

I don't think this is Carnivore in action. It's just now how it works. Carnivore is a box that would be in place at the user's ISP, not at Best Buy.

Ever use Diskeeper? It sucks.. really really bad.

I was gonna say the same thing. Here's a link to a PS2 product at Thinkgeek that does this:

It has been available for quite some time now... nothing new.

Well said.
Blow me.
I'll be there opening night.
(And the second movie was great, you're just too blind to read between the lines)
