2 years to make the transition smooth eh? No matter how big your company is, it doesn't take 2 years to replace anyone in any position. I don't buy this one bit. In fact this makes me feel dirty, I think I'll go take a shower. It sounds like a publicity stunt to me. Maybe they think the geek community will have more respect for Microsoft if Gates is gone, so they pull this stunt to make their stock go up a little which has dropped ~15-16% this year and continues to fall - which for Gates is a whole lot of cash. Don't give me any Robin Hood crap either like someone else posted. He's not doing charities because he wants to help people, he's doing it to create an image of a nice, caring guy who wants to give back to the community. If he wanted to give back so much, MS would open up a little and conform to standards. He'd try to cooperate more with the open source community rather than look at OSS as a threat.

Two years is an awful long time and anything can happen. Any smart techie would know not to trust Gates/Microsoft, so why should anyone trust this? If by some small chance he will actually step down from his current position, it's because he's trying to get out with what he can and save his own butt from a falling giant.

This is a testing release and we don't need everyone downloading it, just the folks that want to be involved with testing and bug reporting. Please don't evangelize this release or start pushing all your friends and family to upgrade. Most of them should wait until 1.0 in about two weeks.

Tsk, tsk, tsk. Because someone trolls the web all night waiting for Mozilla to release another version of Firefox, they get rewarded with their in lights on the front page of slashdot. Did you wonder why it's only on the FTP server and not advertised on the web site?

I'm a techie. I shouldn't have to wear a shirt and tie, but they make me. I may have to crawl under dusty, disgusting desks. Every time I open a computer case, my tie is getting in the way. 18. Apple : Desktop :: Nintendo : Console on E3 - First Nintendo DS Pic · · Score: 4, Interesting

Apple and Nintendo seem to have fallen into the same hole. Both make excellent and fun to use hardware. Both are very innovative. Both make things we may not like at first, but grow to love. And both share the same competition. Microsoft and Sony are both making products to shut down Apple and Nintendo. I can think a hundred examples where Apple comes up with an idea, and Sony and Microsoft use that idea to make more money than Apple. You can almost say the same for Nintendo.

Now why don't these two companies merge? Think of the great ideas that would come out of such a merger! The iPod would be even more kick ass because it would have a GBA cartridge slot and you could play games on it (and maybe copy them to the iPod's hard drive?). The next Nintendo console would look so cool that everyone would have to have one, and the Apple guys would be smart enough to make it play DVDs or whatever new media is out at the time (Nintendo foolishly made their game Gamecube discs mini-dvd, so you cannot play movies on it).

I may not be the first person to think of this, but I feel like it almost doesn't make sense as to why this hasn't happened already.

  20. Final Fantasy on Video Games - Lost in Translation? · · Score: 3, Interesting

Final Fantasy XI Online is played by people all over the world, from Japan to Europe to North America, and is very successful. There are even some (crude) translation tools in the game, so Japanese and North Americans can play together. I'm actually quite surprised this game hasn't gotten more press here on slashdot.

But FFXI is not the only game with success like that. The entire Final Fantasy series has been popular in both cultures. It is quite possible to develop games that the whole world can enjoy, and Square Enix has done just that. And to top it all off, the game is cross platform (both PC and PS2 players are in the same world[s]); something that has never been done before.

This is the best game ever. Ever. You hear me? Go buy it now and meet me on the Phoenix server (Ganiman, Tarutaru RDM).
