DragonQuest, by SPI, did this long before anyone else in the pen and paper world. There are still a large group of DQ enthusiasts, too. You can check a bunch of us out via http://www.dragonquest.org/dqlinks.html

Sadly, this game and company got bought by TSR shortly before they sold out to Wizards of the Coast. A new, less-well-liked version of DragonQuest was released by TSR, but, last I heard Hasbro, who own WotC, had no plans to release a version of DQ. Nor did they plan to sell the rights to anyone. And, yes, several crazy people like me asked about it. DragonQuest really was that good a fantasy RPG and, for the pen and paper market, far, far ahead of its time.

No, the worse thing is people use their laptops on public, free wifi networks and think they're safe. It's not about using a public terminal at a library or something like that. The problem is using a business laptop that was setup using at least some kind of security, one would hope, then taking outside of that protected zone but NOT CHANGING THE WAY THE LAPTOP IS USED.

The average user makes no distiction between a wifi network behind a firewall at a corporate HQ, free wifi at a coffee shop and the wifi router their 15-year-old kid setup for them because they couldn't understand the instructions.

No, sorry, as a frustrated writer, creativity does NOT happen rarely. What happens rarely is a publishing or broadcasting system that's willing to take a risk on something new when they can make money on something established that they KNOW makes money. People who live well off someone else's creativity are risk adverse when it comes to actually spending their own money, or collecting ours.

Right now, in someone's basement or back office, an idea a thousand times more creative than "Wagon Train" in space is dying for lack of funding and the pressures of a consumer economy.

Sorry, I missed this story even being posted until today. For some reason, it never showed up in my notifications.

I'm not moving to Linux "just because". I'm moving to Linux because the boss wants to do it and currently they run Windows NT on a dying server. I've worked with Linux, primarily as an application server as opposed to a file server, for about four years and I've worked with other flavors of Unix as an operator. I was primarily concerned with properly securing the fileserver, being able to monitor security on it and explain it to the poor sucker who will eventually replace me.
To answer your questions, which weren't actually relavent to the question, as far as I'm concerned; we have a separate firewall appliance, I'll be using Syncsort to backup to removable drives, and Linux because I've never touched BSD. And, yes, I know the most up to date info is on the web somewhere, but, as I said, I like having an actual book to read.

    Thanks for your input though.

From what my parents tell me, Hiz Honor, Mayor Daley the First, was as crooked as a three-dollar bill and mobbed up, but *he* always did things for Chicago. Yes, not everyone agreed with him, but often the results bore out over time. And, like him or not, he gave quite a bit of his life to Chicago and always did what he thought would benefit the majority of Chicagoans. Not that I disagree with the fact that he was both brutal and a rascist. He was.

I actually met his widow once at a Catholic church in Bridgeport. My parents are friends with one of the priest there. He was celebrating his original ordination, as I recall. Anyway, she was an interesting lady. Tough as nails, but nice and polite, too. I sort of felt like I was being interviewed when I met her. Measured and evaluated, as it were. Since I made it out alive, I guess I passed muster!

Interesting times back home. I'll have to ask Mom and Dad about the camera thing. I'll bet folks are up in arms.

*sigh* Time to evangelize a little....
I don't see many people talking about Novell here, or anywhere else, these days and it's a real shame. They pioneered the PC-based local-area-network market! Okay, sure, Xerox was working on the idea first, but Novell actually made some headway with it. *They* are the company that Micro$oft had to beat for years and years. In my opinion, Novell still has a better product than Micro$oft. (Never mind the fact that I'm Novell certified!)
