  17. Napsterizing text content... on Sony To Launch E Ink-based eBook In April · · Score: 2, Insightful

For those who know where to look, you can find a fair amount of copywrited text content online. The thing is, what the hell do you do with it? You really don't want to read an entire novel sitting at your desk. And printing them out? Easier to just buy the book.

Until now. Assuming this device can display content unencumbered by DRM, its only a matter of time until these files become more prevalent.

I'm not sure what it all means, though. The publishing industry has been vigilant about making sure digital copies of their media stay out of the hands of pirates, and probably think they've been very successful. But the real reason text content hasn't been traded much on P2P networks is because of the lack of an acceptable playback device.

    So, now what?

  18. Min/Maxing is a skill... on On Reaction-Based Massively Multiplayer Gaming · · Score: 3, Interesting

but not one that I respect. All the posts I've read imply that there is strategy and skill in playing your typical MMO, but they're actually talking about min/maxing. Min/maxing is the 'strategy' of gaining optimal value for your experience, knowing which skills to buy, what weapons to have, etc. The skill is knowing how the game functions and building the best possible character to match. The related skill is knowing how to 'game' the system. Figuring out how the AI works, managing the health and stats of your party, etc.

There's a final skill to these guys that ties the other two together: Deluding yourself into thinking that anything else is going on.

Perhaps the first person who figures out what it takes to kill the uber-monster and coordinates the players to do it is applying skill, but the ones who go with him? They might as well be AI party members.

I want those MMORPG's to be more than they are, I really do. I'm an old school pen and paper player, and the idea of having those amazing worlds displayed on my screen in full 3d wonder makes my heart leap with joy. But the gameplay is everything I disliked about pen and paper honed to a razor sharp edge. Everyone is a munchkin, the game IS about the leveling, and everyone talks in a modern game specific slang (uber, agro, mog), occasionally peppered with the odd "hail".

With Planetside, I feel like something new has been added to the table. The twitch component makes me feel like I'm doing something to earn my experience, regardless of the fact that the game itself is relatively shallow at this point.

Here's hoping the next batch will take the best of both worlds and make something truly extraordinary.

I disagree. Both stories were about the future, despite Pattern Recognition being set in the present. While it had it's faults (uneven pacing being my biggest criticism) Pattern Reconition to me was William Gibson shedding his writing of all the trappings that had become the 'cyberpunk" genre. Neural interfaces, cybernetic implants, magical nanotechnology, all of it has become a sort of replacement for writing about the future. Instead "cyberpunk" authors have taken to writing about neet technology.

Answer: They are not different versions of the same product!!! They occupy two seperate categories:
    • the pack of cards sized hold my entire music collection hard disk based mp3 jukebox
    • the stick of gum, listen to while I'm working out, hold the stuff I'm actually listening to right now walkman replacement

This new player is obviously of the later type, and it should be viewed and evaluated as such. I've been shopping around for a small mp3 player to use while exercising, and this fits the bill perfectly!
