Heh heh...these are times when a little smart shopping makes me a very happy person.
NewEgg has an ASUS NForce 220-based motherboard (Asus A7N266-VM) for $72.99, shipping inclusive. It's a mATX, not full-size ATX, so it has only 3 PCI slots next to the AGP slot. But considering that unless you are a hideously hardcore gamer, the onboard video, audio and LAN are quite usable indeed, you might not need much expandability.
A killer board for less it costs for a PC Chips POS? If you do a little shopping around you'll find it. http://www.pricewatch.com/ is your friend. The board still shows as available at NewEgg. Just a heads-up...
Virtual PC is your friend, Grasshopper. Much as WINE-X/Crossover Office is your friend if you are trying to get non-ported games or Microsoft Office running on Linux. Yes, you will need a copy of Windows but the price of Virtual PC with Windows 2K is actually comparable to a copy of Windows 2K alone.
You'd be surprised how far 2MB of RAM goes on a Palm. I have an m100 and there is still 1327K free out of the 2MB. And I'm not just storing my addresses and agenda on there...I have some little amusing games and toys on there. Tetris? Mahjongg? Frogger? Ask Daria? Present and accounted for.
After seeing more of the Zire, however, the more I like my little m100. The m100 has a backlight. The m100 has a hard plastic cover rather than the rubber mudflap...well, it HAD one before the darn thing broke off. No worries...I keep my m100 in a zippered case for protection. I don't even mind the battery use.
I might grab an m105 before they're gone and keep it boxed up for emergency replacement. I have grown to rely so much on little Chibi-Nuku here that if it broke I'd be absolutely lost. At least syncing is easy, quick, and thorough.
It's not quite at that stage yet...I will keep everyone posted. When the website's up there will be an announcement in my journal.
Call it vaporware if you must, but "trial balloon" is a more accurate word for my post. And my evil plan is working...I got two offers to alpha test in my email box this afternoon.;-)
This is what the Kawaii Linux project is all about. The idea is to create a graphical Linux distribution that will run on everything from 486DX on up. Right now we're looking at doing this with Debian and an installer currently being developed by an Australian developer which will smooth out the usually cryptic Debian install process to a better extent than even the Progeny installer.
The target for Kawaii Linux is people who are refurbishing old computers for distribution to charities and underprivileged kids. A secondary target is those who want to play with Debian but are intimidated by the usual install process, although Xandros and the Progeny Installer address those issues too.
This will be a K.I.S.S. distro in the tradition of Lycoris. The goal is a fast install with the best of breed amongst lightweight applications. If you are interested in the project, email me.
The glowing blue in particular had the look of "good guy" territory. Can't wait until they get their MCP team up and running...the red neon will make those units look sufficiently evil. Or should I say 3v17?;-)
What's the matter with a little flash anyway? It doesn't hurt the machines, it brightens up an otherwise boring looking NOC...jeez, get a little sense of aesthetics, if not humor!
Sun should seriously look at this becoming standard equipment on their machines. How much would this add to the cost of their hideously expensive hardware anyway? A little style goes a long way...ask Steve Jobs.
to name but three. Gary Krakow did all three articles and nobody's muzzled him yet.
I also remember that "The Site" show on MSNBC was very scrupulous in trying to make sure MacOS and Linux got as much time as possible. The fact that Leo Laporte and Soledad O'Brien were both Mac heads probably helped. If you recall, when "The Site" was pulled (it was getting far less ratings than the wall-to-wall Princess Di coverage) it spawned ZDTV, later to be known as TechTV.
Alas, Soledad, where have you gone?
About Gates as geek deity: the Flynn character in "Tron" was kind of modeled after him. It would be cool if in "Tron 2.0" Flynn goes from being a downtrodden geek to being an evil monopolist who revives the MCP to dominate the brave new world of Cyberspace. It would work.
Lycoris, in all the times I have worked with it, has "just worked" on everything I've thrown at it.
It's a real Linux distro that doesn't have you running as root constantly, and distributes its source freely. You can even download a full copy of it from the Lycoris FTP site.
It has a "click and run" type thing going called IRIS that requires per-computer registration, but that's only $20 for the life of the computer, while getting that kind of functionality with Lindows costs $99/year and might be going up. You get one license for IRIS with each physical retail copy of Lycoris you buy, and extras are $20.
And the Update Wizard, which is powered by the same setup as IRIS, is free to all. So if all you want to do is use the apps you got with Lycoris and keep your system patched easily, that functionality is free.
Lycoris also has a great community full of very helpful people. Haven't seen this with any other flavor of Linux. Most LUGs aren't this helpful either.
Lycoris is my choice for newbies. Actually once you install the development tools it's pretty choice for average Linux users too../configure make make install isn't that hard.;-)
There are some chat networks which obfuscate IP addresses on command like Slashnet and Sorcery.Net but this is a better solution. After having suffered an attack while in channel on a notorious "open" IRC network, one which displays naked IP addresses, IRC has suddenly gotten less fun. This might put the fun back into it.
And my senators are Boxer (0wn3d by MPAA/RIAA) and Feinstein. (0wn3d by MPAA/RIAA)
The guy who's challenging Berman for the 28th District on the Republican side would rather be Mayor of the San Fernando Valley, and is (not) campaigning accordingly. There's a Libertarian, but as a third-party candidate he has two chances: slim and none.
Representative government? Ha! What a fsckn joke.

Animation World Network has been continuously up since early 1996. http://www.awn.com/ . Very cool site.
Heh, want a Barbie computer? They've got 'em at PC Liquidator. Warning: this is basically an i810 with no way of upgrading the video. Which means good luck trying to play games on this puppy.
There should be a "Draft Boucher" movement started. Certainly he's the best choice amongst the Dems. He's prolly the last Dem that isn't 0wn3d by Hollywood, at least.
I see us traveling down the same dark path now. I know this Santayana quote is almost cliche now but it bears repeating: "Those who forget the past are condemned to repeat it."
This is not just going on in Louisiana. Rather, it is also going on right here in Los Angeles, CA. KXLU, a free-form College radio station based at Loyola Marymount University in Westchester, CA (near LAX) is battling KTLW, a religious broadcasting station with studios in Van Nuys and transmitter in Palmdale. KTLW has been basically drowning out KXLU's signal by installing repeater stations all over town.
...one of these. Spiffy little bugger. Stylish as hell. The two buttons are for the datebook and the address book...isn't that what you most work with on a Palm, anyway? It would be nice to have a spare in reserve in case my m100 goes south. 2MB is a surprisingly large amount of space when you use lightweight Palm apps. It's like having a Mac SE in your pocket. I like it. It's not a replacement for a laptop or a Zaurus or an iPaq. It's a Palm. It's the right tool for the job.
When an IRC network gets that big, you can bet it's almost totally unusable. DALNet, EFNet, IRCNet...they are all WAY too big. I like the smaller networks. No I won't tell you where I chat, because dammit, this is/. and I don't want to see THEM get spoiled.
Woohoo. Way to go. Netsplits r us. Have fun staying connected, folks...
Lawrence: What about you, what would you do?
Peter Gibbons: Besides two chicks at the same time?
Lawrence: Well yeah.
Peter Gibbons: Nothing.
Lawrence: Nothing, huh?
Peter Gibbons: I'd relax, sit on my ass all day, I would do nothing.
Seriously, aside from enjoying my life at leisure, here's what I'd do:
Buy a house in Santa Monica or Santa Barbara. Near the beach. That would kill about $10 Million right there.
Driver and car worthy of my new status. Driver would also double as a pilot. I'm thinking a Hummer H2 and a Gulfstream. Driving in LA sucks and so does flying on commercial aircraft, particularly post 9/11.
OC3 bandwidth to my own private NOC. Almost zero latency. Even with my less-than-leet skillz I'd 0wn in deathmatches.
Heh, ripping on Lycoris with your Anonymous Coward mask on...
Anyway, Lycoris is a spiffy little distro. I am enjoying the hell out of it. In fact as I speak I am installing the Beta build.
You are going to find teething problems with all the desktop distros. However, Lycoris has their stuff more together than most. It installed like a dream on every box I've put it on. And it does seem scarily like Win2K in places...it's designed for smooth transitions for Windows refugees.
There is going to be some hella-cool news coming from the Lycoris camp real soon...keep your eyes and ears peeled.

Mod this whatever way you want, I don't care, but I just have to say W00t!!! This is a great day for Dreamcast lovers.

But this is VERY serious. The stories about computer waste being dumped on the 3rd World makes this very, very necessary.
Again, you can email me if you are interested in the project.

In the case of MsGeek.Org, they WERE wasting my disk space.

MSNBC has done some surprisingly UNbiased articles about Linux. They have done some excellent articles on:
- Lycoris Linux
- AbiWord
- and the Zaurus handheld
