No. I think the point is prison shouldn't be used as punishment. It's only function should be removing dangerous people from society and rehabilitating those that are able.
The idea that we are spending our money to put people in "time-out" for using drugs, or any other victimless crime is fucking stupid and any logical person knows that.
Studies have shown that interactive constructive environments in jails/prisons improve behavior and rehabilitation rates. So maybe they don't need mindless entertainment like TV, but I hardly think 23 hours of bare concrete is a better choice.
Ok, so now we'll need to protect cargo ships same way that we do aircraft carriers. Hmm, do we have enough battleships for escort?
The fleet that accompanies an aircraft carrier is not for pirate protection... they are there to protect against submarines and battleships, and to resupply the aircraft with fuel and munitions.
Forgive me if I'm not giving the pirates enough credit, but until they have modern submarines and battleships, or fighter/bombers... then I think a few armed guards with sniper rifles and maybe a large caliber deck gun would suffice.
You sound as though you're implying that someone who isn't extremely passionate about their work won't be good at it, or is just a drone doing the minimum to get by.
I don't think that is the case at all, take mercenaries for example... sure they might love killing people... but I imagine that they do it for the money, and happen to be very good at it too.
This person actually convinced me that evolution does not exist with their flawless idea for experiment.
Heres why I do not beleive in evolution. If I had two, lets say Penguins for arguments sake. If I bread these two penguins in a big deep hole with a ledge with their food on say, two feet out of reach of the penguin then how many generations would it take for the Penguins to Evolve into a creature that is capable of getting the food off the ledge? Also wouldnt they just die out while they couldnt get the food?
Isn't it obvious? God would grant them flight, and we would get a new species.
Interestingly enough... I have noticed that drug testing tends to push people towards harder drugs. Marijuana is a pain in the ass because it stays in your system for so long. Once people realize that drugs like cocaine don't have an overwhelming odor, can be used discretely and the metabolites are out of your system in 24-72 hours... they might switch drugs (if they don't mind the different high).
I thought that part of the reason for the condition of Mars of today is due to a weakening magnetosphere.
Mars may well have had a thicker warmer atmosphere but without the protection of a strong magnetosphere (like earth has) the solar wind 'blew' the atmosphere off of the planet. Less water vapor, less CO2 means less greenhouse effect and all of these factors snowball into the cold desolate conditions we observe today.
You point out exactly why this will probably not be used in forward combat situations.
It will certainly still be used for surveillance... but probably over our own country. So there is no need to worry about any "assault weapons," let alone anti-air capabilities.
"Hey look, its the Goodyear Blimp... I wonder why its been hovering here for weeks...."
No. But, your analogy is disingenuous. If you noticed these gaps, then proceeded to commit unlawful entry and trespass in all these homes (or even just one of them) then you'd be responsible for your crime.
If, in addition to your trespassing, you also were able to lock the owners out of their house when they wanted in then you might be forced to pay damages to some degree.
I'd like to add that this reminds me of the problem prisoners have when they are finally released after a long prison stay. Often times they cannot handle the freedom and lack of structure in the real world. Unfortunately the vast majority of humans essentially feel the same way.
Freedom is scary, and dangerous. People can't deal with that.
It is a solution for a pop culture non-problem.
What I mean by that is... All of the people who are irrationally scared of the word "nuclear" have the same fearful position on nuclear power.
"What do we do with the waste? Not in my back yard!!!"
"The run off from uranium mining can rape the local flora. Not in my back yard!!!"
It isn't about solving some huge looming problem. It is about pacification of people's irrational fears so we can actually build nuclear power plants and stop spewing mercury and radioactive ash into the air. Shit, we could even use the plants to split water for hydrogen fuel... then again "hydrogen" is scary too.
If this "solution" can be used to convince people we have all of our all of our bases covered, then it is a very good thing.
That doesn't solve our biggest problem. What do we do with all the none vegetative people who cannot learn? You know... those people who think "intellegent design" is biology, and can drive a car, own a gun, and vote.
You are correct that the article is bullshit, this has become par for the course in pop-science articles.
For what it is worth I RTFA and some of the comments, so this idea is not entirely my own....
I think what may well be the case is that the panel produces a marginal amount of current, but enough to slowly charge say.... a 9volt rechargeable battery... which is then used to power a lightbulb. This scenario was suggested by a poster from the region who claimed to see this featured on television. If this is the case then it isn't hard to see how an ignorant reported could conjure some sensational bullshit and make it into a headline.
The same problem is happening in the biotech industry. Patents are being given out for individual proteins, which is not only stupid, but there is no pressure for these patent holders to actually DO something with them.
This kind of shit only helps to hold back legitimate progress.

This is from a .pdf on the site linked in the summary. Sounds like it definitely has some energy potential.

I agree with everything you said.

Well its really both it's density and hardness. The Brinell hardness of U-238 is 2,400, which is just shy of tungsten at 2,570. Iron is 490.
Also, DU has incendiary properties (somewhat similar to magnesium) which make it great as an artillery shell.

Of course, because planned obsolescence has never been an issue before... especially with a corporation full of engineers.
