How would that be more beneficial than simply opening up the current sources? What parts of BSD would you include? Certainly, you don't mean the kernel, because you want full Solaris compatibility.

Oh, wait, you must be one of *those*.

Here's how to transform your Solaris box into a BSD box:

    1. Install gcc and gnu make packages from sunfreeware.com
    2. usermod -s /bin/csh cow007
    3. Add this to your .cshrc: "setenv PATH=/usr/ucb:$PATH"
    4. Add this to all Makefiles: LOADLIBES += -lbsdmalloc -lucb

    That oughta do it.

Without fail, *every* morning I have come to work in the last five years, that stupid thing has either crashed repeatedly or hung the box outright.

This is a real pain, because the power button on the Compaq wore out years ago, it doesn't have an auto-power-on option in the BIOS, and it didn't ship with a reset switch (or a place for one on the mobo). I have to jump the freakin' power switch pins with a goddamn nickel.

Maybe I should just short the power-please signal on the ATX power supply connector and be done with it.

In the first BIOS screen, there is a Display option, and allows you to select Monochrome, CGA, EGA/VGA or None.

This whole "signal strength" strength is a boat load of red herrings.

I don't know how the tracking software works per se, but you can bet your backside that it probably employs:

    1. Which cell [antenna cluster] you're logged into
    2. Which sector of the cell you're using (around here, there's usually three, and they are directonal)
    3. What the TDMA transmit delay is

3 is a little less obvious -- GSM uses TDMA to divvy up the channel. The phone and the tower need to know how far apart they are, for speed-of-light reasons -- this is why cellular switches are all run off atomic clocks.

Since we know the time for the signal to reach the phone, we know how far away it is. We also know the direction (down to 120 degrees).

Finally, GSM phones keep tabs on up to six nearby towers, and the GSM network must know which ones the phones can see in order to do tower handoff.

So, now we have a several approximate vectors and distances. It shouldn't be hard to come up with their intersections. I think it can be done with two angles and two distance measurements.
