We could keep the number of ambiguous patents at bay by requiring a WORKING VERSION of the PRODUCT before a patent is granted. That way if you have a GOOD IDEA and can IMPLEMENT it you get protection to be rewarded for the fruits of your labor.
This would eradicate the conceptual patents that are causing most of our pain. "A method to increment the value of a positive or negative value in a given number space" patents would be thrown out, thus keeping 'n++' free to use by all.
There are many more unsatisfactory operations than you know about. My Lasik was 4 years ago - the beginning of SEVEN surguries. I still see multiple images with my left eye, but they are closely grouped and managable - but I've learned to completely ignore my right eye. I see 4 distinct, but overlapping images of everything I look at with it, but only the lower left one is really there.
This was from a highly respected opthomologist in my area, not some strip-mall, rip-off artist. My doctor is still trying to help me, with another attempt scheduled later this year. But I can no longer see the stars - or even read highway signs. Makes it pretty rough when you are a traveling consultant...
Also note that when it works it only returns your CURRENT vision to 20/20 - you're eyes will continue to degenerate and you'll need those glasses again in a few years.
Would that I had the opportunity to start again I would save the money for something else.
What most people see is that this is just an extended version of IE's built in search that throws you to MicroSoft's search engine (which sucks), so they don't see the implications for all the REAL internet applications that don't run through a web browser.
I walked away from cigarettes, cocaine and several other unspecified alkaloids at the same time 30+ years ago. Take Nike's advice - Just do it...

Remove the hard drive from an old PC. then build a Linux install on CD - configure it to dial her ISP, get her an account on www.mybookmarks.com and write "This Side Up" on the CD.
It boots, she can do whatever she wants, but she can't effect any local settings.
The only trouble we ever had is why it says "This Side Up" on the CDs - I'll leave it as an exercise for the reader to figure out what she did...
RIAA and it's ilk are as busy screwing the artists as they their customers. Here's a posting by Janis Ian about her experiences as a "represented artist" and why she supports p2p file exchanges.
The most reading I see done at once is on airplanes, but here is a period during takeoff and landing that you can use no "electronic devices". I carry several books (audio, text & html) in my PDA at all times, but have to resort to the good ol' paperback for my weekly flights.
This is the kind of technology that would make touch screen portable displays a usable reality. If I could use GSM to connect to my home/work servers from a truly lightweight touchpad screen think how productive I could be! EVERYTHING on the network literally at your fingertips no matter where you roam.
Maybe those electronic notepads they used for Startrek TNG aren't so far into the future after all...
Although I've not been at SCC for over 6 years, I must commend SCC on their uncanny ability to reverse-engineer ANYTHING related to printer cartidges. While I was there HP released a cartridge purported to be impossible to open (5Si), therefore impossible to recondition. These guys immediately manufactured a machine designed to cut them open without harm, and all the parts to refit it. Copyright infringement is not something I would accuse them of, and being extremely good at what they do should not be against the law.
Been doing it fulltime since 1974, Unix Admin, Multi-Language Developer, Software Specialist - always updating my skills and staying near the leading edge, but far enough back to not get swept up in the "latest craze".
I now find that I'm respected for my extensive knowledge and depth of experience - I get to act in advisory positions and get paid accordingly.
Retire? Maybe... When the travel gets old and the stock market gets it's feet back, but for now I'm doing "just fine" thank you very much.
I don't know where most of the posters get their information, but we amateur radio operators (hams) have been doing VoIP for quite a while, over dialup and without static IPs - and we talk anywhere in the world to any other connected user. Check out http://www.eqso.org and http://www.synergenics.com for excellent software.
No date/age/time reference, but I remember lying on my back, looking up a bright light bulb suspended on a cord from the ceiling (think early 50's electrical wiring), with a moth flying around it. In my peripheral vision I see the vertical bars of a crib or playpen. That's it, just the movement of the moth...
and use asp2php as found on Freshmeat.

I'm certain it will be JUST as effective as CAN-SPAM.
You can strip out the power supplies and with a few small mods turn them into stand alone 12 volt power supplies for other projects.
I use them for low-power Ham radio equipment.
Does this remind anybody else of a Segway?

www.thelinuxshow.com - discussion of the current news as it affects Linux - Interesting guests - lots of Micro$oft bashing - often very interesting.
A word of warning Miguel and friends, taken from the lessons learned by the previous companies who have partnered with Microsoft:
"There is only one rule in dealing with the Devil - Don't!"

REAL programmers use cat >
"and there is to be a live audio stream of the event."
And the MP3 will be on Kazaa about 20 minutes after the event.

So you get a few red dots! So!! How many guys do you know who regularly watch the scrambled porn channel?

IBM produced some amazing adds in support of OS/2. I particularly remember the nuns...
In the end me, 3 of my friends and MCI actually bought and used it..
Elegant adds do not a product sell. I can only hope this is the beginning of a better campaign.
And can I hear an "Amen"?!?!
I have approximately 30 people who mail me everyday who seem to be EXTREMELY concerned about the size of my penis - can we do them first? - Please?
Go over to freshmeat for a copy of The Manhattan Project - a virtual classroom. Everything you want in one package.
