And if that zombie box also happens to be an important computer:
Flight control, medical records, first responders, military operations, etc etc etc.
Yes, these computers _SHOULD_ be locked down, but randomly attacking computers in which you do not know what operations they are running could lead to a dangerous situation for somebody, and that would lead to MASSIVE liability on your part for any losses.
And not to mention that sending a DDOS atack against an army of zomby computers would be quite unfeasable, and possibly turn the spammers into turning that army against you and DDOSing you off the net.
This is probably a fight that is better fought by the government by passing laws, and then investigating and punishing those who created the army of zombies. And finding non-destructive ways of informing operators of zombified machines that their computer has been compromised and then helpind them clean their computer up and lock it down would also be a large help.
Problem with this is that the spam itself usually does not come from the spammers computer, but they hijack the computers and internet connections of regular people.
What Lycos was doing was attacking the vendors who support advertising through spam, either directly or indirectly. The goal of this is to remove the economic benefit from spamming, because then companies will hopefully look at their advertising "partners" a lot closer.
And then there's the fact that the sun does not necesarilly shine for one half of a day (day being one complete revolution of the earth around its axis, not sunrise -> sunset... erk.)
Where I live (Milwaukee, WI) sunset can be as early as 4:20 PM on the winter solstice and as late as 8:35 PM on Summer solstice (Central Standard Times, I believe.) I'd think that right before sunset the clock would read 6:00PM, so that's over an hour and a half off.
I'd say that mascots are declining because so often you don't see one character anymore. Recently games tend to be FPS, MMO or RTS which don't have the one ubiquitous character.
The mascot's domain lay largely in the side scroller.
I'm not sure about Panda in particular, but I know that many anti-x (where x is virus, spyware, etc) will quarantine a suspicious file rather than deleting it. Quarantining essentially just puts it in another folder, sometimes compressing/encrypting it or the like so that it can not be run. One big downside of this is that if you run a separate anti-x program, then it will find the threat that has been quarantined and then flag that.
So there's really only one solution: now that Pixar's release from the Iron Claw of Disney is upon us, why don't they start working for Nintendo? I could actually see them taking the characters and transposing them onto the big screen in a way that actually makes us care about them (at least for 123 minutes or whatever the run of the movie is.)
This would help Pixar not be crushed by the Mouse's Massive Mmarketing Minions(tm)when Pixar tries to release intelligent movie after intelligent movie which somehow competes with Disney's continuous offering of bland blah.
How did I get so worked up over this? I think I'll go make myself some herbal tea.
Similar to changing gears in a car. You don't sit there and think okay, the car is now in third gear, I must engage the clutch and then switch to fourth gear. The conscious mental process is just "upshift" and the body does the rest (or at least subcounscious portions of the nervous system.)
Same thing with writing and typing. I usually don't even think of the individual letters that I need to put down. I don't even deliberate over the words that I use. I just kinda think of the topic, and then my fingers move. When I want, I can then enact tighter control by switching my focus.
In fact, when typing, I usually don't even notice the keyboard, or most of the OS. Right now I guess I am thinking about interacting with this little box, not even noticing the rest of the page.
IIRC the deep see thermal vent ecosystems are based on chemical energy from the vents. The liquid that comes out of them is extremely sulfer (I believe) rich. This sulfer is captured by various bacteria which oxidize the sulfer to gain energy. And indeed, these bacteria are often found inside of other organisms. Not inside the cells like mitochondria, but more like inside a special organ (Much like out large intestine is a host to bacteria, or moreso like the stomach of a cow.) Come to think of it, Humans carry around more bacteria cells than they do human cells. Although, the human cells are generally larger, meaning that most of our mass is genetiacally human.

And then there's the whole issue of mitochondria/chlorplasts. Those were originally single celled organisms that got absorbed by another single cell organism, but then reproduced rather than being consumed.
The resulting Chimera passes down both the "host" organism plus the mitochondria/chloroplasts with their own unique DNA from the cell proper.
End result: Now these two once foreign cells are essentially the powerhouse of modern life. Chloroplasts are where plants actually convert light energy into chemical energy (stored as sugar) and mitochondria are where plants and animals (and most other assorted organisms as well) then convert sugars into readilly available energy, ATP (Adenosine TriPhosphate.)
Although the soundtrack is awesome, this is one movie where it was more amusing when the sound failed. Me and some friends were watching EDII at a midnight showing, when the sound went out shortlty after the clock stopped, when the Candarian Demon is first trying to bash its way into the house. At this point, the camera keeps panning wildly around, supposedly following where the demon would be outside the house. However with no sound people in the audience (all Evil Dead fanatics, I'm sure) started making "whoosh" "Zoom" "Zing" sounds that were simply... hilarious.
One of the few times where "audience participation" (AKA being that annoying guy in the theatre) actually contributed to the filmgoing experience.
There weren't even any complaints about how the sound went out that night...
How about just throwing it in the microwave, that should destroy any data on it, and probably fry some electronics on teh drive to boot. Then if you really want you can give the stormtroopers a countersuit for "destroying your property." They'd have virtually no way of proving that they didn't do it...
I guess you just hope that they can't prove that you did it, otherwise you might get pinned with "destroying evidence."
Close. Basically, ticket sales are about enough to pay for the use of the film to show the movie. Take away ticket sales and the movie theater loses money, eventually going out of business.
The reason the popcorn/etc is so much is because that is what the theatre uses to pay for the facilities, employee wages, utilites, advertising, etc that go along with running a theatre.
Means you'd have to send between 1,000-1,000,000 e-mails on average to get through.
And you know what people those messages are likely to get to? Those who don't have spam filters, and so likely those people who don't understand it, and therefore... Ding Ding Ding... those people who are most likely to become "customers."
I suppose that spam getting filtered out at the ISP, companywide, or campuswide level would probably cut out access to a fair number of marks, though.
Grr... Why is the submit button so close tbe preview button.
There is also Biodiesel which would be quite adept at moving our vehicles in a more eco-friendly manner.
The major problem that I have seen mentioned about biodiesel is the fertilizer used to grow corn (or other oily crop) is usually derived from natural gas.
This problem could be mitigated by using different farming techniques and finding alternative sources of fertilizer.
Designing city spaces in such a way to take advantage of more efficient machines could have a much greater impact:
Assume a baseline of the Volkswagen Passat TDI which gets approximately 38 MPG from diesel fuel, which would be comparable to the mileage from biodiesel.
A 180 pound person will use about 120 calories per mile walking at 4.5 miles per hour. That is the number of calories in one Tablespoon of corn oil, the main constituent of biodiesel. Considering there are 256 teaspoons per gallon, that comes up with an efficiency of 256 miles per gallon of corn oil, or greater than six times the efficiency of the Passat TDI (which is a fairly efficient vehicle already.)
The human body can also use much more tasty fuels than drinking pure corn oil, although they might have lower energy densities and higer prices. Additionaly, walking places will actually bring the efficiency up as weight goes down! Other side effects would be reduced stress, lower health and auto insurance premiums, strengthened immune system, and a body that is not repulsive to the opposite sex.
If the commuter needs higher speeds, they can get on a bicycle and increase their speed while actually increasing efficiency to about 912 miles per gallon at 15 miles per hour, nearly thirty times the efficiency of that Passat.
Okay, I've convinced myself. I'm gonna go put on some shoes and take a walk now.

Who believes that there are ideas, ideas, that we mustn't be exposed to, because they'll do something evil
Like the commonly held belief in many parts of Africa that having sex with a virgin will cure you of AIDS? This idea has caused the rape and subsequent spread of HIV to many children...
Ahem. United states has almost six times the proportion of people in prison as China. Now, it is possible that China is simply not reporting many of the imprisoned people, or that the simply use alternative methods which we may find less savory than imprisonment, but...
If only we citizens could band together and give politicians large amounts of money, so that they would work in our best interests.
Nah. The politicians would see throught that and realize that the companies have deeper pockets. A better idea would be to band together and take that money to start a service which is better than the existing monopolies. Then you could get that money back and invest it into more services.
Yeah, eventually the company will grow large and corrupt, becoming part of the old guard. That's when a new generation of idealists has to come in and start the process over. Hmm... reminds me of Joesph Campbel's "Hero of a Thousand Faces" only in terms of economics.
I think what the graandparent wants is the ability to put multiple tags on an individual email. Oftentimes emails can cross over to many different topics.
Can I have a play on that slippery slope once you're done with it?
This may seem like a slippery slope fallacy, but it is indeed based on solid evidence. Analysis of historical climates indicates that climate changes are indeed very sudden.
Ahh... you're looking for Sunbird. Still really in the production stages, but...
