Given the recent development of Google TV and the prevalence of the Opera browser in the embedded and set-top box market (the only other browsers which are widely deployed are Espial, Fresco and IE-variants on Windows CE platforms), it is quite possible that this rumour is linked to on-going Google TV development of digital set-top boxes and DVRs (which have been discussed on Slashdot previously). What the acquisition of Opera by Google would mean for set-top box manufacturers who offer Opera as a browser platform is anyone's guess...

A former colleague and I were discussing this at one stage, which inspired this hack entitled "Audible Code Separator" thereby allowing the bell character (^G) to be used for token separation in Perl scripts. I'll not have any other language stealing Perl's thunder in terms of lack of readability!:-)
The perl5-porters list has already been hit by this virus resulting in 200+ messages being posted over a period of two to three hours yesterday. Additionally, it was reported on this list by Elizabeth Mattijsen on this list here that the Gnome XML list has similarly been affected.
I read this almost expecting to see a -"... I'll get you, and you're little dog too!..."
I can't wait though until all of this is over when Scooby and Shaggy can pull the mask off Darl McBride and find that it was really Old Man Smithers who used to run the haunted amusement park that was behind all of this - "And I wouldn't have got away with it too if it wasn't for IBM and your for pesky OS advocates!"
Other than the one on the bridge where Luke lost his hand, I don't recall any.
The pendant in me must respond - Luke actually lost his hand in Cloud City on the planet of Bespin. Cloud city was a mining colony established as a sanctuary of political freedom from the Empire and Mining Guild. The Empire only took control of the city after the events noted in your post.
Any hacker with sufficient knowledge of these systems isn't going to try to crash them because they will quickly realize that by destroying these systems they're screwing over and creating millions of desperate people, both people who can't access their accounts and companies who can't put out paychecks on time.
Whilst I wish that I could agree with this sentiment, sadly I think that there are many people who would take advantage of flaws located in ATM networks. Whilst it may be argued that the knowledge required to exploit such a flaw would require a mindset vastly different from the average hacker, remember that power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely.
I can't wait until someone who gets moderated down in this discussion cries out - "Help! Help! I'm being repressed!" - and decries the "violence inherent in the system".
It's obvious what this is - KWYIJBO! A big, dumb, balding North American ape. With no chin. And a bad temper.
There we have it - The question of the hybrid ape solved! For a total of twenty-two points, plus triple-word-score, plus fifty points for using all my letters. Game's over. I'm outta here!

Don't be too proud of this technological terror you've constructed. The ability to destroy a planet is insignificant next to the power of the Force.

The site has now been mirrored by karma whores on numerous different hosts at great expense and at the last minute.
Betamax or laserdisk?
As a POP3-to-Hotmail bridge, there is also Hotwayd which works particularly well.
