  1. Outlook Express! on Ask Slashdot: Best Way To Archive and Access Ancient Emails? · · Score: 2

heh - i have all my email going back to '98 in Outlook Express. Best email program ever! It's nearly perfect for what i want. (Any way to get it to do inline spell checking, ie, underlines misspelled words as you type?) Still running it on an XP box. Been using Windows Live Essentials a bit for Win8, it's not horrific, but lacks some of the characteristics..hope MS injects some of the OE spirit into it..

Not necessarily... Where i live in Victoria, BC, in my basement suite i can just barely get a connection with my Rogers supplier, but when friends on Bell visit, they have no bars. 12. The End of Faith, Sam Harris on Ask Slashdot: What Books Have Had a Significant Impact On Your Life? · · Score: 1

Dawkins is fantastic, and also his book 'The Greatest Show On Earth' should put to rest the thoughts of anyone questioning evolution...but in this area, i think Sam Harris' book really takes the cake. He didn't even write it for an atheist audience (doesn't even like the term, questions our use of it, we don't have a name for people who don't believe in Santa Claus, so why should we identify ourselves for other fictional characters?), but it's a slam dunk home run. The writing style is also fantastic...i swear my IQ temporarily goes up 10pts when i read a chapter.

To answer the OP, this is the most influential book i've come across, and really shook up the way i think about things. Harris isn't perfect of course, and certainly some holes in some of his positions, but on the whole it's very good stuff.

I was going to comment on the gender issue as well, although the OP here took it in the wrong direction. I'm more inclined to suggest that women are less able to succeed because they're expected to dress up significantly more than men in many cases... How many men also put on make-up as well as choose from the clothes they wear? And how successful do you think any women would be if she wore the same outfit or two every day at work? (And what does it say that this even has to be asked??!) It seems a tad unbalanced, and something like this article could comment on that.

Same here in British Columbia (Canada) - there have been a few municipal elections which were very close, and went back and forth in the recounts, but eventually they came to a proper conclusion. Why *wouldn't* they do a recount somewhere if requested...? That's just bizarre to me. But so is a two-party system that puts down a one-party system (Communism) claiming to be the herald of freedom and democracy...two choices instead of one does not a real democracy make. It's still a bit too much of an ultimatum, imo.

  22. Re:Overlooking something important... on Lance Armstrong and the Science of Drug Testing · · Score: 5, Interesting

Not quite. WADA (World Anti-Doping Agency) is standing behind USADA's decision, and they do have much more authority. The IOC (International Olympic Committee) is one such body that will be influenced, and any body under the IOC will likely have to play along - and thus i believe the UCI (International Cycling Union).

Also, USADA's case *is* being continued - next up is Lance's long-time team manager Johan Bruyneel, who will likely make a similar decision (although will be surprising to see him leave the cycling world.) Then, i believe the USADA will provide the IOC and UCI with their findings, and THEN we'll see Lance's titles stripped from him. Given that these bodies all have to play nice, i would be very surprised if the UCI challenged the findings. Yes, it will implicate themselves, but they're pretty much damned either way as i see it..if their real goal is to eliminate doping from cycling, then they'll have to shape up. I think the evidence is pretty strong that there has been corruption, and they won't be able to hide it much longer...

    That's my two cents. =)
