Agree totally, it's amazing how inconsistent its interface is...middle click (open in new tab) works one day, doesn't the next. How you view your groups changes regularly. Admin settings change at random. It's abysmal.

Worst of all is that they've removed the 'add user' feature. So now people have to be 'invited'. For someone with non-profits like me, i collect emails at a table at an event, and it's a nightmare trying to get them into the group. Now there appears (on some pages, depending on if it's the 'old' or 'new') you can add people again, but if it detects one error in an email address (it seems to know if a gmail address is legit or not), it fails...but it doesn't tell you which address is failing. So if you've got 10-20 in there (or heavens forbid, more), you get to try and figure out which one is the problem.

This really sucks because i've spent years with GG, building up lists, etc...and the last couple years they've been buffoons. So frustrating.

Last night was pretty laggy as well (not just my connection, lots experiencing the same thing in the chat channels.) When it gets like that (for about a minute when i tried to move, i'd just warp back to my 'start' spot), it's really not cool that the game is completely unusable.

Otherwise, i've been enjoying the experience, it's kind of neat that if you find an item, it's usable by any of your characters, and with the new shared stash, it's super easy sharing items between your characters - which wouldn't happen if playing offline single-player.

Is that worth 'online-only'? Probably not. But the game has been stable 99% of the time for me, so it's nearly a moot point for my experience, although if i lived somewhere with less-than-stellar internet access, i'd be pretty darn choked.

Exactly...i like the idea of making a statement as people, and showing that we're sorely lacking on this front in the TV world. I'm reminded fairly regularly that there are barely any scifi shows on, yet it's such an amazing platform for storytelling. And maybe the studios will perk up if they see that many people actually want this as well (although it's practically been a sledge hammer of an effort telling them this anyway..) Either way, i'm happy to see something on its way.

This is the tip of the iceberg - consider how cattle are primarily killed: the captive-bolt gun. It propels a chunk of steel into the animal's brain, which is pulverized, and bits of brain are then carried through the body of the animal via the circulatory system.

And as the OP mentions, nerve tissue is where prions are found, and TSE's are found primarily in the brain. It turns the brain to 'sponge', thus the S in Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathy, or BSE (Mad Cow) which is Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy, which in turn is CJD or vCJD in humans.

    Eating meat is risky.

If you look more deeply into the matter, you'll see very, very few people are tested for vCJD. Sure, in 2006 there were 200 people discovered. Since the symptoms are similar to other illnesses (Alzheimer's for example, of which there are MANY cases), plus the time to manifest is huge (last i read, 40 years potential incubation), there could be considerably more un-diagnosed cases. I wonder how many people are tested for vCJD in less-populated countries like China, India or various African nations? Are we to assume that in 2006, there were zero cases of vCJD in these areas as well?

  14. Re:Animal Rights? on Hunters Shoot Down Drone of Animal Rights Group · · Score: 1

You could say the vast majority of 'animal advocates' are fine with eating meat. An animal *rights* activist, if they truly are coming at this from a rights perspective, would no more tolerate the killing and eating of a cow than a human. There are numerous parallels between animal and civil rights. (Not all, of course. No animal rights activist is saying squirrels should be allow to vote, but certainly they deserve consideration, and the right to live 'on their own terms'.)

There are many who wish to reform animal husbandry practices - certainly any omnivores who wish to remain omnivorous would fit under this hat. But to attach 'rights' to the description is really a more significant perspective that's quite misunderstood. Unfortunately, 'animal rights' is often conflated with just about any other 'advocacy' work for other animals, such as 'bigger cages' campaigns -- to give it a human equivalent, imagine arguing that human slaves should be given larger cages, instead of arguing against slavery itself. A few years ago i fruitlessly tried to have the animal rights section of Wikipedia updated to reflect this, but the response of editors was literally 'Wikipedia does not want to reflect fact, but commonly accepted information'. *sigh*

  15. Re:Animal Rights? on Hunters Shoot Down Drone of Animal Rights Group · · Score: 1

Yes, imagine suing a mosquito because your personal rights were violated. Or suing an ant colony because they stole from you.

Rights don't translate to 'you won't ever be harmed'. It's communicating a message: we shouldn't harm others. (Or steal, etc..) And if you do, then there are consequences. (And in the case of animal attacks, they're usually hunted down and killed, not unlike we do with humans[including killing, in some states].)

The idea behind animal rights isn't necessarily to include them in society (the right to vote, etc..) but to afford them consideration, and allow them (free-living animals, like deer, bears, eagles, etc - not usually dependent domesticated animals, such as dogs and cows) to live on their own terms without interference (much like we do.)

In the world of law in most places, you are either a 'person' or 'property'. It's not illegal for me to kill my dog, since he's my 'property' (he has no intrinsic value unto himself). If this same dog were 'un-owned' and simply walking down the street, he would have no rights, and the killing of him would be a trivial legal matter for the most part. If someone else were to kill my dog, the dog himself has no value, under the law - but since he was *my* 'property', i can demand restoration of my 'property'. If the dog had rights, it wouldn't matter if i wanted restoration or not, a criminal charge would be pursued on his behalf - same with the un-owned dog.

Animals rights from a legal perspective fundamentally tells us other animals deserve legal consideration and protection - and yes, from humans, since it would be meaningless go the other way, ie: a human to sue a seagull for stealing a few french fries, or even a seagull to sue another seagull. (Interestingly, children, who are similarly dependent as pets, seem to almost float between property and personhood..they have an 'owner', like a dog, but not like a seagull. And i would imagine legalities gets really sticky when the parent/guardian cannot be located..and imagine one 'independent' child trying to sue another..yow..) BTW, IANAL.

  16. Re:Question for the other Catholics on Test-Tube Burgers Coming Soon · · Score: 2

The ultimate authority on this should be the Vegan Society in the UK. They (well, Donald Watson) coined and defined the term 'vegan' in 1944. Based on their ideas, since this doesn't at all challenge the idea that animals shouldn't be harmed or exploited (there is no ethical foundation in lab meat), it probably wouldn't be considered vegan - even if they could somehow do away with using blood, etc.. It still came from an animal without consent, even if it were just one cell. (Consent being the opposite of exploitative activity, which is why oral sex, breastfeeding babies, etc.. are considered vegan although 'animal products' are being...err....consumed.)

This, however, brings up an interesting question: why not use human tissue for this? To run a parallel question to the above author: would eating lab-grown human 'meat' constitute cannibalism? If the cells were willingly donated, and presumably no vectors for illness, why not?

  17. How To Be Modded Down When Discussing Nuclear Pwr on US Approves Two New Nuclear Reactors · · Score: 4, Insightful

Kind of depressing that none of the postings modded up at this moment reflect an anti-nuclear position. There's something a bit off about that. Here's how i see it on Slashdot with the topic of nuclear energy:

How to be modded up: create a duality of only nuclear and coal options for energy production; belittle the dangers and significance of nuclear disaster; insist that there isn't any issue with waste from nuclear plants and that we will 'use it all up'.

How to be modded down: mention that uranium is a finite source and that we WILL eventually deal with a depletion in the same way we're facing oil; inject that the costs of insuring nuclear plants are outrageous and that no private firms will (leaving it to governments [ie: citizens] to cover in the event of an emergency); highlight that it takes DECADES to get a plant to operating status (how is that going to help now, next year, or in the next 10 years?) Fact is: nuclear is *expensive*. Finally, a sure-fired way to be modded down is to insist that we have technology accessible to us NOW that can reduce emissions and is not nearly as expensive (environmentally or economically) as nuclear will be.

FYI, on my own habits - i rarely mod down a post, unless it's blatantly ignorant of any factual matter, and even then it's rare. As suggested, i try to use my mod points to mod up, not down. Would love to see a bit more of that here for a more balanced display of discussion on this subject...
