The point was made in the article that if the device does indeed need to remain classified for the puposes of national security, it should not be allowed in domestic cases. I think that point is valid. If a government can not disclose how something works it should not be allowed to use it on its citizens. But of course that argument hasn't worked for carnivore or whatever it's called these days.
Mathias could be considered the thirteenth apostle he was selected to take over for Judas. Although when he was selected they called filling the position of the 12th apostle. So you are indeed correct that there never was a position of thirteenth apostle but there were indeed thriteen apostles. See the first chapter of Acts for clarification.
Personally I don't think that police abuse of power and breaking of law is as rare as you'd like to think. I had a very similiar thing happen to me as the post you replied to. If police can't do the job they're supposed to with out violating rights and breaking the law because they fear for their lives let them find another line of work. They knew the job was dangerous going into it. Sure everyone makes mistakes and I'm willing to allow for that to happen. But that does not mean that we should just ignore them. They should be noted when thet occur and if an officer mnakes to many he should be fired and possibly barred from law enformencment permanently. I fully beleive that it is arrogant overzealous law enforcment that are one of the primary factors sending this country to the shitter.
Please tell me what brand of laptop you have that only weighs two pounds. I would like to purchase one since I can't seem to find one under 3.5 with out the battery in it.

I think the real problem is that, we know about Asimov's three laws. Therefore David's creators should have been aware of them. Why would they make a Robot that was so dangerous and plan to unleash so many of them on the world. It was obvious that the humans for the most part never really thought of the robots as anything more than machines or tools. That being the case why would that have not built it safegurds to keep the robots from running off, hurting themselves, or hurting people. It doesn't have to be the three laws but some kind of safeguards just seems like common sense to me.
During WW 2 it was spelled Duck tape. Cause it was water proof or something. Then after the war it was discovered to be handy for taping "ducts" hence the change. Although these days I don't think it is used for ducts.
I never read caliban's hour so I can't comment on that. But I have thoroughly enjoyed the Otherland series so far. It has some slow points but for the most part has kept me engaged. I think that it's every bit as good as memory, sorrow, thorn.
I've been doing this for years. Instead of empty I toss in some prizes. That way the person opening the letter will have
something to talk about on their break. All kinds of things have found a new home this way:
- Little plastic army men.
- Out of focus photographs.
- Change. (Costing more in postage than it's worth)
- Lettuce.
- A printed warning about the Goodtimes virus.
I would ask you if you have been to the US. I've been to europe on several occaisions and in my opinion I would have to make triple what I make here in the US to live at the same level anywhere in the EU. At my income in the EU I couldn't afford the things that I take for granted in the US ie: daily 1/2 hour long hot showers, a house with a fair amount of square footage, a big gas guzzling car, a case of Coke a week, etc. You can have your free health care, I can afford to buy my own insurance so it isn't that big of an advantage.
After having used the freedom network for a number of months, I have to say I like the idea of being anonymous on the net but don't like the price I have to pay in speed. I have a DSL line and I might as well be on a 56k line when I'm running the Freedom client, the response time is so reduced it's painful. This of course make me pick and choose when to run the client, which means I might as well not run it at all cause I frequently forget to start it when I should. Has anyone else had these difficulties?
I didn't see any mention of a giant marshmallow man destroying the earth. don't these people watch TV. Not to mention Godzilla or Gamera. These people obviously have not done their research. Not one mention of the sky falling. These people call themsevles scientists. Bah. Bunch of crackpots is what they are.
Since the porn industry is usually an early adopter of new technologies, I can just imagine the type of slow motion money shots that are gojng to start showing up in porns now. Eww.
What kind of geeks are you? I haven't read one post refering to Doctor Who's robotic dog K-9. The first dog should have been named K-9 and had a sonic screwdriver for a tale.
Perhaps some of us slashdotters could get together and form a not for profit corporation that picks up the slack of the patent office. It's purpose could be to review these internet and business process patent apps at the same time of the patent office. Then when it finds particularly stupid or broad patents that look like they stand a chance of making it through the process, it sues the shit out of the people filing it. Or if not sue at least make a big enough stink to keep the patent from passing.
Ever meet a CD with software that required you to type in a "CD key"? Like recent Windows? Or Diablo II? That's not one-off pressing, yet each CD is unique. Marking of audio CDs can be done similarly.
Those CD's are not each unique, any Windows CD key will work on any Windows CD. The Keys are unique sure enough but the CD's are all the same per pressing.
This is bad just like the music labeling thing a few years back was bad. It leads to censorship. You make not think that it is censorship now, but it can certainly go that route in the near future. I know that my local Wal-Mart won't carry any CD's that have the Explicit Lyrics label on them. How long until they stop carrying game titles that are rated for 17 plus. Do you want Wal-Mart deciding what's good for you to consume?
They fear the music reverting to the anarchist public domain, and would like to keep the industry together (this is an industry organization, isn't it?). Is there anything so wrong with that?
Yes there is something wrong with that. Copyright should expire eventually. In my opinion sooner rather than later. I think the sooner a piece moves into the public domain the more incentive for the artist to keep creating new work. I'm all for the artists getting their due but it eventually should become the property of the society that helped inspire it.

I agree completely.

Anybody know if a copy has been released into the wild? I would like to download it before it gets sued to oblivion.

$50 Shipping and handling fee!! Hardly a bargain. I've spent less shipping on montors.

for this company to go after as opposed to Quake. To me EverQuest was never much more than a 3D chatroom.

One more to add to your list
- Used condom

"Every single artist that you do like is supported by another you might not like,"
I like Britney. Who's supporting her?
WonderBra, perhaps.

BTW, got any weed?
As a matter of fact, i do have some, but it was far more difficult to get than it should be. But that's another topic entirely.

What about people named Dick?

I personally don't have a problem with any one of those scenarios. What exactly is so bad about sharing any of that info?
