    They're constantly one-upping each other with protectionism or subsidies
    There is actually a reason for farm subsidies (though of course it's not widely advertised!). If farms weren't subsidised then you would be importing almost all of your food and there simply wouldn't be a farming infrastucture in your country (I'm assuming you're from the USA or EU).

    While this might sound reasonable from an economic point of view, you have to consider the problems if you were ever at war. It's no use having a huge military force if you can't feed them because the country that supplies most of your food is one of the enemy.

    Similarly, in the UK at least, there are subsidies paid to crofters (small scale farming type thing) for areas where they grow crops without using artificial fertilisers (they use seaweed as a natural alternative) or pesticides. In the event of a major nuclear attack, these knowledge and skill might be very necessary and so they're preserved.

    I'm surprised more people don't know the reasons behind these things, but I suppose it would be a bit imprudent for a politician to openly state that your country was paying farmers subsidies just in case civilisation was destroyed! ;-)

    the default splash screen has been changed to the group photo.
    It's nice an' all, but could we have it changed back please?
    The splash pics are in /usr/kde/3.1/share/apps/ksplash/pics so you can change them, and I believe if you put files in ~/.kde/share/apps/ksplash/pics you can have a customised one for your own login.

    Alter network settings: Control pannel, Networking, Right click, Properties, Click on TCP/IP, adjust values.
    This isn't correct for Windows 2000.

    Hypocracy isn't a word, despite it seemingly meaning "rule by hippos" or "rule by hypodermic needles".
    It could be a word. Presumably meaning "rule from beneath". I guess it could be used to describe a situation where a person appears to have absolute power but is actually told what to do and controlled by his advisors (cf Mr G Bush ;-)

    because it broke ground with internet multiplayer "deathmatch" type gaming that you could actually use.
    My memory may be playing tricks on me, but I'm sure Doom didn't have Internet play. It had modem-modem and network with IPX/SPX....and a bug in the first release that flooded the network with packets causing the whole network to slow to a crawl and getting you in trouble. ;-)

    Ahh...I see. I can't think of a way to force it to either. I guess the only way at present would be to open a macro to do the job for you, or something.

    Have you reported this as a bug?

    Yeah, there is. Don't "Open" it, instead "Insert...External Data" into a sheet. This gives you the proper options. I agree that OOo should give you this option on the Open dialog.

    The main reason is that up till recently there was a real need to get faster processors, and graphic cards and so on. However, we are reaching a point where the latest and greatest in CPU and graphic cards will only be of interest to a very limited number of users.

    When I have files with lots of quotes in them I reduce the size by using single quotes instead of double quotes.
    This is just wasteful as it only applies to quotes. You should use a smaller font so all characters are reduced in size.

    Unfortunately no-one can be told what the Time Cube is...nor can they experience it for themselves. The guy is just nutty, but apparantly he believes in this thing even though he can't explain what it is.
