  2. Re:Don't tell the evolutionists.... on New Evidence About 'The Great Dying' 250 Million Years Ago · · Score: 1

Not trying to nitpick here (and I may be wrong), but wouldn't lack of competition actually stifle evolution? Evolution implies survival of the fittest, where a mutation eventually becomes standard. If there is no competition, even the non-fit ones are surviving and multiplying, therefore the "strong" mutation isn't becoming as dominant as evolution would require. There would also be less to feed on and breed with, which can either work for or against evolution now that I think of it.

In the end, we both may be right. I'm just a bit confused as to whether a huge drop in population actually accelerates or deccelerates evolution.

  7. What about video game piracy?? on GTA: Vice City Sells 8.5 Million Copies in 3 Months · · Score: 1

Compared to the piracy-laden music industry, the video game industry seems to be doing quite well. I'll keep this short and sweet: perhaps people are putting what little extra money they have in their pockets these days into products that offer more "play" than just a list of songs. Shuffling the playlist to make track 2 come before track 1 just doesn't seem as interesting as defeating the next big boss, or trying a different course/weapon/whatever. Maybe that could explain for the downturn in music sales. I don't have any stats or pages to back this up, but video games in general seem to be doing respectably well even in the down economy right?

Okay, so lets say right now, the studio's have broken even. Shouldn't all future sales then be posting a profit?? Much of the overhead is up front for making a movie right (hiring actors, special effects, filming, etc)? Maybe the studio fudged their numbers, maybe not .. but if they just broke even right now, then Stan Lee should get 10% of all future profits. Surely the movie studio wouldn't keep pressing more DVDs if it would cost them profits!? If they are spending more than $20 to press, ship, and advertise for a DVD then something is seriously wrong.

  13. Re:Nothing. on What Software Do Cable Installers Place on Your PC? · · Score: 1

That's about what happened with me. The cable guy came to activate my connection and run the wire from another room for me. After giving me the box of stuff, he left. By the time the tech guy arrived to set things up, I already had everything connected and working fine, save for the addresses of roadrunner's news and pop3 servers. I didn't want the tech guy messing with anything or installing software, but he did want to verify that my connection was working. Apparently the active web browser, irc session, instant messenger conversation, and ftp connections weren't enough proof of a working connection so he decided to do "ipconfig /release" from the console, which triggered several of the programs to choke and spit up error messages. My only response was something along the line of "uh, I told you it was working... can you leave now so I can fix it?" No major harm done though, he was just doing his job, which I understand. Since I had been distracted I forgot to ask what the news and pop3 servers were though, which defeated the real use of even opening the door for him.

UMG should be required to sell these cds in different jewel cases that make them EASILY distinguishable from the standard jewel case. The lack of sticker won't catch the attention of 99% of the buyers. There should be some other reason that the buyers will not associate this product with a real CDDA compliant cd.
