  5. Do they really need one? on When Should You Buy Your Kid A Laptop? · · Score: 3, Insightful

Two years ago I started attending a computer engineering program at Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden. I bought a laptop with wlan when I started, but I sold it about a year later. Why? There were computers available in abundance everywhere and I got tired of toting around a 3kg laptop and my regular books in my bag. I could not afford a lighter laptop at the time. But on the other hand a lighter laptop would probably have a screen that was too small for my taste.

I decided to get a new desktop machine at home and kept my home dir in school in sync with a folder at home using unison. That worked great in both the WinXP and Red Hat environment that the school is using.

How come download caps seems to be The One Rule when talking about broadband in the UK and the US? I live in Sweden and I haven't heard of any ISP using download caps and several providers are offering 26Mbit/s down (if you live close enough to the telephone station). Currently I have 13Mbit/s down and up (VDSL), static IP and I've been running servers without any complaints since 2001 ( I haven't had VDSL since then but the same ISP). This costs me 399 SEK ( ~44 EUR, ~57 USD ) per month, a bit much for a student, but on the other hand I couldn't be happier with the speed!

It's the same chunky graphics, interface etc though. One example of this is SVT (I think it could be called the Swedish equivalent of BBC, http://www.svt.se).

I don't believe this is true. In Sweden the word is "skål" (pronounced somewhat like "skull" or "skoal") and translates to the english word "bowl". So I would think that it's a reference to the cup you're drinking from, not someones skull. I believe the same applies to Danish and Norwegian.

  15. Re:Compare with Gentoo on Custom Debian Distributions · · Score: 2, Funny

Actually, a new package intended to help Gentoo users switch to Debian was announced on debian-devel yesterday:

    Package name : apt-gentoo
    Version : 0.0.1
    * URL : http://www-jcsu.jesus.cam.ac.uk/~mma29/apt-gentoo/
    * License : GPL version 2 or above
    Description : enhanced package installation

apt-gentoo enhances the Debian package installation experience to make
it fully competitive with newly-popular source-based distributions.

As packages are installed, apt-gentoo automatically downloads their
build logs from the buildd network. The logs are then slowly scrolled
past on the user's terminal to simulate building the software on the
    local machine.

apt-gentoo optionally, and by default, gives increased realism by
spinning the CPU in a tight loop between build log lines, and writing
    large files to disk.

An additional utility apt-gentoo-benchmark is included to tune the
delay loops for your hardware by finding the length of time taken by
typical compiler and linker runs. (On slow or low-memory hardware we
recommend leaving these values at their defaults.)

A preliminary package of apt-gentoo is available at
    http://www-jcsu.jesus.cam.ac.uk/~mma29/apt-gentoo/

I installed with 2.4.18 and it worked like a charm. I don't think there's anything wrong with the ability to choose. If you install it with the default 2.2 kernel you can apt-get the 2.4.18 packages and have that kernel installed instead.
