  1. And that is immoral on Terry Pratchett Considers Assisted Suicide · · Score: 1

My life is my life, so I must be the one to choose to live and for how long. Not any church, government, expert body, nor anyone else. If we follow this rule as firmly as we follow the current rule of "no right to die", then we will not go down the path that the Catholic Exchange suggests.

That's my definition of "right to life": The right to decide about one's own life.

    As it is...
People die in all sorts of ways, including suicide. We can't stop those tragedies.
People live though great suffering with no living way out. We can stop those tragedies... but we're not permitted to.

The law against the right to die by one's own choice is immoral.

Sure, but try writing those classes in JS with proper scoping, hard typing, speed from compilation, etc. It's not designed for that. Different tools have different uses, where each tool has its own strengths and its weaknesses. And that is why C++, C#, Java, etc. won't be abandoned for a long time.

I doubt that Apple will allow any scripting language on iOS anytime soon, or later, possibly never...

gives you a client which could potentially run across iOS, Android, ChromeOS, OS X, Linux and WIndows from substantially the same codebase.

That is why I really hope that the Mono project manages to survive. (Looks like Xamarin might save it.) Sure, it uses different UI tech for different platforms, but the business logic can be reused. And who knows... as Mono matures, perhaps the Mono team can consolidate UI building too.

Of course, scripting and HTML5 have their strengths, but I think it will take a little longer than one might expect before they're fully supported on all mobile platforms ('cos of Apple and the sheer volume of functionality in HTML5). Although they're great for UI front ends, they're not really suited for serious business logic, IMHO.

A jock is someone who likes to use his brawn.

A nerd is a geek who has a strong topical focus.

You're a geek if... - you study some field of knowledge (real or fantasy) because you enjoy improving your knowledge/understanding.
    - you build things that require thought (whether electronics, computer software, or even advanced and complex Lego structures).
    - you like to have cerebreal adventures (ex. roleplaying, sci-fi/fantasy fiction)
    - you like to think up better ways for society to work.
    - etc.

    You're a jock if...
    - you do physical activies because you enjoy improving your physique/looks.
    - you build things that are strong (whether powerful engines, noisy engines, or even building strong brick walls).
    - you like to have physical adventures (ex. jumping off high places, chasing a ball)
    - you like drink up and socialise
    - etc.

Most of us are a combination of both. The question is how much geek vs. jock you are.
Does your geek side overwhelm your jock side, or does your jock side overwhelm your geek side?

On the topic of further education: If you went to college/uni because...
    - you liked to learn and understand, then you're a geek.
    - you just wanted the degree, then you're not a geek.
Even if you didn't have higher education, if you like to learn, then you're still a geek.

So, if you like to think, but can't be bothered studying, then you're only part geek,
and if you're "opposed to knowledge wherever it occurs" then you're not a geek at all.

    - Calculators use so little energy that a small strip indoors is enough to power it. Laptops are still not solar powered because the amount of energy required has so far been too much for solar cells to produce.

My point is that, in terms of heat, laptops and calculators are very different.

Have you ever used a laptop in the sun? I have, when sitting next to a window where the sun shines in. I soon move because the laptop gets uncomfortably hot. I don't know how bad that heat is for my laptop, but it's considerable, and I think it might be too much for the little fan, so I'm not about to test it.

That's something that really bugged me with the prequels, as the prequels completely ignored all the existing fan fiction out there.

In my view George Lucas needs to make use of what he already has, decent stories. But I guess he's never bothered reading the fiction of his own fans.
