I'll admit to being a junkie for the eye candy. Does anyone know when we will start to see this stuff included in the major distrubutions? A few months, a year?
I work for a large company (about 2500 employees in IT alone). Our policy is to do very little outsourcing. We only out source the types of tasks that are well defined, most of it in legacy support. Out sourcing works very well in these situations. Any new development is kept in house where it can be better managed, and changes can be made faster when requirements change.
Out sourcing has it's place, but it should only be used in certain situations.
Thats why I never bought into that "Microsoft killed netscape by bundling IE" bullshit. I never used IE because it was bundled, I used it because it was better and didn't bork my box like NS did.
That may be true for you and many others. But the majority of people who buy a computer are going to use the browser that comes pre-installed, because they don't know about anything else.
Think of all those people that buy a Dell or a computer from Best Buy. Do you think they are going to go download and install Firefox instead of using IE, when the icons are all over their desktop?
Actually, I'd say that most large companies (like the one I work for, about 40,000 desktops), are currently testing SP4 for Win 2000. Large companies are very slow to move to a new platform.
If you RTF.P (Read the Flippin'.plan), you would understand why it isn't released at the same time world wide.
Everywhere else will probably be Friday, August 13th (que Twilight Zone Theme) or close to that date, with just a few exceptions (e.g. Russia and Poland). This isn't because we don't have love for you folks outside the U.S., but the localization and manufacturing process takes a bit longer outside the U.S. where we will have JVC run 24/7 to get the units built. I guess the European manufacturers prefer to give their employees nights and weekends off. Go figure!
They would love to release it the same day world wide, but it's just not possible. And the thought of making the US wait until Friday the 13th for this game, well that's just crazy talk.
Like others have said AVS Forum is the best place to research. We recently finished our basement and I decided on the InFocus 5700. It's not true HD resolution, but HD does look awesome on it. I also looked at the Infocus 4800 (similar to the X1), but I saw rainbows with it's slower color wheel.
The most important thing is to see each of the major technologies (DLP, LCD, LCOS, CRT) to decide if the tradeoffs of each will be a problem for you.
Have you seen a good HDTV setup yet? I have a Infocus 5700 (not true HD) projecting on a 119" screen. Even though the projector isn't true HD resolution, HD simply looks stunning. There are several sites (1, 2) that have some wonderful HD screen captures. Take a look at them, and tell me HD is a waste...
It's been mentioned already, but I thought I would share my own memories about "text based interactive fiction".
I read all of the choose your own adventures. And I cheated at all of them. I would have all ten of my fingers marking different parts of the book. I wanted to make sure that I didn't "die".
It was alot of work, but I always finished those books with the most points possible (and I learned a great life lession....or someting).
Anyway, I could never finish hitch hikers guide, because I couldn't put my fingers in the disk, damnit!
How could you link directly to Google on the front page of slashdot? Couldn't you have used a mirror? Do you realize what will happen if Google gets slashdotted? The entire internet infrastructure will come to a screeching halt! You insensitive clods!
Do you have to worry about any liability when you are a sole proprietor? If you code something bad, can't your customers come after you? Even if you are in the right, the legal fees could get you.
Is there any advantage a LLC would have over a Sole Proprietor in this situation?
Can't find string terminator '"' anywhere before EOF at JavaComment.txt line 13.
Mark also took his millions and started hd.net, a pioneer in the HDTV arena.

Um, the article was about HD-DVD, I was pointing that out to the parent.
There is a very good resource that covers alot of the topics being covered here. Here is a link to the God FAQ.
...everyone knows that the robots are going to fix all the problems in 2035.
We are talking about HD-DVD here, the quality is at least equal to HDTV, with the potential to be better (depending on compression).
Most are still small, with revenues well under $50 million.
If only my small company was making well under $50 million...
You claim to be a geek/nerd, but yet you have a 6 digit slashdot userid (129189). How do you explain this discrepency?
Gimme some sugar baby.

Says battery temperature is -34.5 (is that C or F?)
Seeing how it says -34.5C I'm guessing that would be C.

This is typical of every large company...

1) Go to about:config.
2) Select "Print Preview"
3) Crash.
On Firefox 0.8 on Windows 2000.
Hrm...I wonder if this will work on my machine.
Open a new tab, type in about:config, click on Print Pr
"What if you received a magazine that only had stories and ads that you were interested in and pertained to you?"
It's called Maxim.

My wife told me she wasn't going to get any more if I kept reading slashdot. Problem is she doesn't know where I'm getting it from.
