    Black and Middle Eastern esports fans are conspicuously missing.

    Hispanics make up 17% of the US population and aren't mentioned at all. What's up with that?

    Those of Middle Eastern ancestry make up .42% of the US population. That would be 4 people at a 1000 person convention. The small percentage makes it very easy to skew the over/under representation.

    The best (?) thing about Windows 8 is that you get a task bar on every monitor. Great if you have a couple big screens. The magic corners with no visual hints has to be one of the worst ideas they've come up with. Killing metro apps is fun too. There probably is some more intuitive way but here's what I do :-( go to the upper left corner wait for the screen image of the desktop to appear flip back to desktop mode by clicking on the image go to the upper left corner wait for the images of all the metro apps to appear right mouse on the metro app you want to kill and select close.

    "sport" has multiple definitions. The modern, urban, head-to-head competition is only one. Hunting, fishing and other behaviors are included in some of the definitions of "sport".

    You're comments are a reason that companies drag their feet on enhancing safety. They could do the right thing to add more safeguards. Then some will take that to mean they were defective in the past, and sue. We're actually creating disincentives for companies to improve. The auto insurance IIS safety standards are one of the few places where we provide incentives for companies to improve. I'm kind of surprised it hasn't caused lawsuits "you sold me an x that wasn't as safe as y". Hmm, maybe CYA causes the car companies to have crash testing as early as possible the product cycle to avoid that.

    The government was trying to move to more COTS products instead of home grown so that they could push crypto across the government. USG goes to RSA and says "we'll use your product as a standard as long as you use this algorithm because it meets the minimum standard. We'll pay you to integrate it". RSA would analyze the algorithm and put it in based on assurances and the level of analysis they were capable of. They take the money and release the new product. There were a bunch of crypto export restrictions at the time. The government lessens export crypto restrictions because every country already has the main algorithms and their mathematicians and they want to know what algorithms people are using.

    I'm no scientist here, but the moon's mass I believe would be critical to it's stability in orbit.

    Ugh. Note: The moon is under continuous bombardment form interplanetary dust and rocks. Note the giant craters on the moon. I really don't think a mining operation is going to change the orbit of a planetoid any time soon.

    Pickup trucks did catch fire in the garages. The cruise control stayed live when the car was off. Some rubber part could get a hole in it. Gas would leak through onto the live circuit causing a fire. There were sever pretty burned out garage pictures during that time. It didn't make a big splash because no one got hurt.

  11. Engineers created RADAR to make it easier to find and kill people. That work wouldn't have been done under the ethical guidelines outlined by some. I on the other hand am fine with something that makes it easier for the other guy to get killed before I do. I'm also fine with using that technology to get from place to place in peace time.

    I really like my macbook matte 15" with the "betweener" 1680x1050 display. Microcenter has late 2011 apple refurbs for $1399. I have one now and thought about getting another one. They are upgradable with better than normal resolution and the anti-glare screen. It would be a "two year old design" - new machine without USB3.0. GOM18LL/A

    Maryland has a new "rain tax". Well only certain parts of MD have the rain tax. The state levied the tax but has never determined how the money will be spent or what can be done to lessen the impact of runoff on the bay. It was supposed to help with runoff remediation but now its just a tax.

  16. Dump H1B. Instead of giving out Visa for foreign nationals, we should try to KEEP foreign graduates in this country - make it easier for foreign students graduating from US colleges to live and work in the US.

    That's an interesting idea. You would be retaining people that have already spent some time integrating into the society.

    Except they don't. Where is this mysterious foreign worker that works for less money under the H-1B program? I've never met one, and I think I know why: The terms of obtaining them require that they are paid the same as anybody else working in that particular job.

    You've probably never actually talked with folks brought over under H-1B. We had folks, a couple jobs back, where the customer ended up telling the H1B contracting company that they had to pass through more of what they were charging to the folks doing the work. They got 40% raises still leaving them below market contracting rates. The customer was happy because their contractors were happier and they still saved money, probably 20% over US.

    I don't believe it given the speed at which science advances and the amount of time it takes between experimental steps, publication or analysis. Have you ever worked with the US Government? A two week delay has the same impact as one of us taking a lunch break at work. We can only blame that for the delay when we're behind or are trying to make a point.

    Good grief. The European, Russian, Arab, Chinese, et al, are all pushing to monitor everything that goes on the wire. Look at the "Great Fire-Wall of China". There are plenty of Easter Europeans that commit code to open source projects. Are you assuming Russia, et al don't put in traps and back doors? The West Europeans are no better. The UK, for instance, has one of the densest CCTV networks in the world.

    How many vehicles are under $15K? Even a Civic (my minimum vehicle) is about $17K. ABS, more Airbags, Bluetooth, Real stereo, better crash protection. Its amazing how much technology goes into a base vehicle.
