Especially now that Timothy is back. Any post that does no toe the Liberal/"progressive"/anti-religious line will get modded down and the chance that you will ever get mod points becomes non existant.
Since I only buy industry standard hardware, my warranty is the same, no matter what OS is used. Of course if I ever delt with a "major" like Dell of HP that might be different, but as long as I build my own, who cares?
I work on the "majors" everyday in a white box store as the tech. I have had Linux running on every brand out there. Not a big deal at all.
Does anyone have a better answer than price to the following? Why does HP insist on using that half size power supply that is so bad tha E Machines gave up on it? I replace HP power supplies 2 to 1 over all the rest put together.
"It could be argued (I stand to be corrected), that Windows was the only GUI not led by, or written by someone from Xerox..."
Gates and Jobs had people working together during the design and coding phases of the original Mac. Jobs later claimed that Windows was a blatant rip-off of Apple's work. Most people from that time period considered Windows to be a crippled clone of the Mac OS.
If you read my post, not one M$ cert was listed. Anyone should be able to keep current with their certs. Cisco and Novell are both better for employment than M$.
Here in North Carolina, you are better off getting a Networking associates degree at the local CC than a four year degree. If you double up with a programming degree you qualify for 80% of the jobs out there but only if you take advantage of the certification tests, CCNA, CNA, CNE.... Any ed + a cert that says you at least have a specific clue is worth more than any general degree.
Amazingly the only employer that consistantly requires a BS in CS is Red Hat.
BS = bullshit MS = more shit PHD = piled higher and deeper
My Dads favorite saying to anyone that thought general knowledge was a qualifier for any job. He made his students learn and think. His MS and PHD candidates could do any needed test in the lab themselves without help to prove their Thesis. He was: Dr. Boyce C. Williams Professor of Agriculture NMSU (1/1955 - 4/1985)
He probably has 25+ pieces of unnessesary crap running at startup.
Why does every coder that writes a Windows app think it has to run at sartup?
The only things that should ever run at startup, in the background, are: AV, mobo, video, sound, and anti spyware. Anything else is a waste of resources.
You got it. As a computer tech that has to fix Dell's that come into our white box store, I will say that Dell has no concern about performance. Their P4 3.2Ghz machines are slower than most AMD Athlon XP 2400+ machines I've seen. I wonder if Dell has a clue what performance is?
And like all fads, when people fugure out it's a fad, it dies. People never admit to buying a fad item six months later because their embarrassed to have fallen for that crapola. This is just an electronic version of the pet rock with sex added to spark interest.
The pet rock was THE greatest maketing scam of the twentieth century. Wish I'd thought of it.
Norton has gone so far down the toilet since Symantec bought it out. When Peter Norton ran things it was some of the best DOS and Windows utilities around, now, about a third of the virus infected machines I see in any week have Norton AV letting them in. Pull the HDD and plug it into the test bench box, scan with F-Prot and move on. Anyone doing tech work needs to look at the IDE to USB kits available. Time savings for under $40, no need to reboot the host when checking a drive.
Shameless plug: F-Prot is the best Win or Linux AV that I have used. In 2.5 years I have never seen a virus get through. All the demos(3), work machines(4) and 2 servers at the white box store I work at have it and my boxes at home use it too. Mine are dual boot, one RH9/WinXP and one Suse 9.1/WinXP F-Prot works great on any partition it runs on.
Did you know that your fingerpeints went straight to the FBI database? Just like they have since the military started collecting them. They are used to run a check for past criminal activity and another check for the same when a security clearance is needed.
Everyone that gets arrested gets fingerprinted and the prints go to the FBI.
Now where will the DNA data be stored? Same place as the fingerprints have been for over 50 years. Not that big a deal. Mine went there in '76 and were checked again in '77 when I went to Submarines.
Amen to that. The astronauts and engineers at NASA have always been topnotch people. The mid to upper level "suits" on the otherhand, are "the problem". Beaurocrats are the same everywhere, they will never make a decision that they might be held accountable for. Heaven forbid that I make a decision that might make the program look bad, inefficient, wasteful....... I might get fired.
Two simple proofs: 1. Who ordered an out of spec (temp) launch? People afraid to look bad because weather was not controllable and would make program look bad = Challenger.
2. Who refused to believe that a piece of "frost" could damage a wing and refused to even consider checking it out? They had no way to fix it so if it is not acknowleged nothing will happen, take the chance = Columbia.
Putting the engineers in charge with astronaut advisers might work, it sure couldn't be worse that what we have now.
You might be true;y disgusted to know how many machines are still coming in with it on them today. At least half the ones I clean up every week have NewDotNet on them. You would think some would learn over the years, but it sure doesn't seem that way.
I do more of that now than I did three months ago. It is helping, but some of these people are just hopeless. I've even taken a few machines to the point of my own. The only way to start IE is to run Win update or find the.exe file in the tree.
He was pointing out the co-responsibility of the fools who run zombies because they won't pay attention or try to learn. It takes both parties to create machines where the best/simplest/cheapest solution is reformat/re-install.
When you explain the cause of the problem and give them tools to keep it fixed, when they come back and Ad-Aware hasn't been updated in 63 days and they have 4 - 7 toolbars, I just ad 15% to the price of doing it all over again. Call it a stupidity tax.
I don't understand that one getting hammered the way it did. The people who foist this crap should be tied to a tree and fed ex-lax for a week. The users who allow it should be taught responsibility while wearing a shock collar. You just called the thundering herd of dumbass a thundering herd of dumbass.
I work in a whitebox store and spend 80% of my time cleaning this crap out of boxes. I tell them where it comes from: ALL pop-ups are EVIL, ALL toolbars are spyware. At least 20% will be back in < 3 months with the same problem(gee I don't know where the 6 toolbars came from?). I will not let any computer leave the store without Ad-Aware and Spybot installed, yes even a brand new one, and the owner instructed on updating and running. With some it helps with others nothing will help till they make the connection between clicking this crap and paying me money.
That you can bribe one or more members of any Legislative body anywhere in the country. Cubic dollars always gets the attention and wins most of the time. In this case, any legislature that passes a bill like this should be impeached for gross stupidity.
"Somewhere between the 70's and the 90's, we all collectively lost an intelligence level that our prior generation had."
Blame the NEA. When I was in Junior High and High School (Grad. HS in '74) Every teacher had a degree in the subject they taught and a minor in Education. The NEA got together with Universities and went to every state legislature and conned them into requireing every new teacher to have a Bachelors in Education. That created larger Education departments at Universities and sold more degrees. Today our kids are lucky if their teacher has a "minor" in the subject they are teaching. I wonder where the root of the problem is?
I do agree with the theme that all kids can't be taught the same. The worse thing is not failing those that deserve it. "Keeping their self-esteem up" is more important than teaching them something. Thats just Liberal crapola. They will earn self-esteem by actually acomplishing something. Anything not earned is meaningless.
Of couse the general trend in the USA of not holding anyone accountable for their own actions is the basic problem. You can always blame someone else for all your problems, or your upbringing, or aliens, or.......
Especially now that Timothy is back. Any post that does no toe the Liberal/"progressive"/anti-religious line will get modded down and the chance that you will ever get mod points becomes non existant.
But very appropriate:
I know I'm being paranoid, but am I being paranoid enough?

It takes a lot of salt to make a pile of bullshit that big palatable.

When was the last time M$ released something that wasn't a "real" beta? XP is still a beta.
They are running the greatest scam in software history: get people to pay you to do the beta testing!
I have a firewall in my router (netgear). Would never consider one from M$ as it's likely to have as many holes as Winblows.

Of couse the definition comes from that great arm twister himself, Lyndon Johnson:
An honest politician, once he's bought, he stays bought.
