10-14 new linux exploits which dont apply to 95% of linux users. I'm on the debian security mailing list and almost every notice they send out is regarding a package I dont use (on a package heavy box even).

Look at it this way, when you say "linux exploits" you are not only talking about kernel issues and quality packages but every half-baked bit of code to come out of a college dormatory. If you include all the windows shovelware in with those exploit numbers I venture to say that you would see a very different picture.

ATI likes to play the catchup game. They tend to release a comparable part some months after nvidia sets the new standard. On the rare occasion when they actually surpass nvidia (I'll take your word for it the 8500 is faster than the geforce) it's by some negligable amount. Shortly thereafter nvidia releases their next gen card and blows everyone else out of the water.

I used to stick up for ATI but those days are long gone. They have nice features but abysmal driver support. You get to make lovely decisions like "driver A - TV tuner + crashing" or "driver B - no TV and no crashing and gfx glitches in games"

  19. One thing you have to remember about consoles: on The Battle Of The Consoles: From Atari To The Xbox · · Score: 1

The popularity of consoles varied dramatically from region to region.

Just to give a few examples:

Turbografx-16 was more or less a flop in north america but in Japan it was *the* most popular system of its generation.

Genesis aka Mega Drive did quite well in NA, Europe, and Japan although it was definitely second fiddle to the pc engine.

SNES aka superfamicom had to play catchup as genesis had a huge head start on it but by the end of the 16-bit era this system was probably the most widely supported. My personal belief on how genesis managed to lose the crown was segas lack of a good 6-button controller when fighting games were at the peak of their popularity (yes I know one eventually came out but it was too late).

To sum it up I certainly agree with you that there is no way SNES should have been left out. As far as which systems were "successful" it all depends on what market you are talking about.
