So much for playing games online, downloading game demos
Not that I'm keen on the idea, but if you look on the other side of the fence... The computers and network are for educational purposes, not personal entertainment.
I'm sure the conspiracy theory people will see this as a suggestion by Microsoft to stop students from getting those pesky Linux iso images.
That is the dumbest thing I've ever read. How often do you download Linux ISO images? Its one of those "Hey, if I mention Linux, maybe I'll get posted" lines. It was unneccessary (but surprising it wasn't michael, to be honest).
Everything game-wise is written in DirectX. DirectX != SDL. So, you either have to hire game coders with experience in a multiplatform engine, or port (rewrite) the entire game to sell to Linux users (which will hardly be profitable, and, therefore, not worth the effort).
Think of MS like the tobacco industry!
Its bad for you.
Everyone knows it.
Yet there are millions of smokers, kids learn it early, there are thousands of Tobacco farmers that would be out of a job, and the industry is so big, no one could topple it.
I'm sick of hearing zealots spout crap like "Wait until DRM is in, then everyone will tell MS to shove it!"
MS is a superpower. If they told everyone they plan on cornering the stock market, and taking over the world, people STILL would be buying their product. Face it people, if there is going to be a change, it will happen slowly.
I'm not saying Linux is bad, or that there is no way it will ever take over MS, I'm just saying don't expect it to happen overnight (or in the next 5 years, for that matter).
Its more along the line of coding on the engine, not necessarily using it. The reason they use the word "seat" is because everyone will probably use the same source in some type of source control on a server, so its the same code, just used on different 'seats'.
$100 per 1 person license. A 'seat' license is a license for a person. So if you have 5 developers, all that need the engine for coding, you need a 5 seat license.
What difference is this linux game, and garage games "$100 per license of the Torque engine (with all tools) and garage games will publish the game", deal?
And... the developers probably have to hold onto day jobs, so it'll be VERY difficult to produce anything graphic intensive (well, it can happen, but the graphics will be FAR outdated by the time the development is over).
AND... the standard game developing ratio is 10 graphic artists/animators for every 1 developer. Is there going to be enough artists for the project??
The fact that the Two Towers is nominated for best picture is news for nerds... barely. The rest? P'shah!
Its about as newsworthy as the superbowl (and not for the commercials and a comment by michael insulting anyone who is a football fan... which I am, but michael's already commented personally to me, so I don't mind).
Russia is suspending its space tourist program, for fairly obvious reasons
I'm glad the airlines don't stop all planes when one crashes.
Seriously, though, I'm almost positive that anyone that signs up to be a space tourist signs some document stating that there is a chance of death, and the russians can't be held liable.
I don't think that its "obvious" they should stop it. Everyone is aware of the dangers of space travel. This isn't the first time an accident has happened in the space program (especially russia's).
I'm walking in a park when all of a sudden my cell phone catches a distress beacon...
Its a better one player game

When you play "The Sims" you get multiple people you control, and a whole environment you have a decent amount of control over. You garner people, make two seperate people and make them fall in love, introduce a third to start a fight.
When you add the 'multiplayer' experience, you add in two things that are negative to this style of game.
Loss of Control
and Competition
Now this simple game has become Everquest when that isn't the whole point of the game.
Honestly, AI can only get you so far. If you truely want an infinite game, you need a MMORPG where everyone plays the part (not some 1337 d00d trying to PK j00!). AI can't compete with the human mind (at least, not at this time).
. But you shouldnt have insulted "Deity Michael".
He insulted me first.
But if this is for the dorms and such - no, you're wrong. People in college aren't learning 24/7, they do have some type of free time.
Its still the campus network. But, if bandwidth costs are part of your dorm expenses (explicitly), then its fair to cry foul.

Do subscribers get input when something goes wrong, or are they, like regulars, just left in the dark?

Its a step. Why must it be 100% linux or I'm gonna bitch and moan?
My mom used to tell me to be happy with what I got. You got it on linux, quit whining.
Thought of a good analogy after hitting submit.

I'll reply directly to you for my question...

Actually, if you use the 'Torque Game Engine', (which was used to develop Tribes2) at $100 a seat, Garage Games will publish the game for you...
If you just interrupt the telemarketer with "Take me off your list", it'll take a week of calls... MAYBE two, and it'll ALL STOP.
I haven't gotten a telemarketing call in years.

Sorry about the redundant post, but slashdot wasn't displaying the posts after they got submitted... was wierd.
Anywho, mod it down.

Well, putting ST in left field by not following the ST universe isn't good either...
Look at ST:V
Not to mention releasing it between the new James Bond, and the Two Towers was just plain stupid.
What's the criteria for a book review to get a front page post vs a sectional post?
Slow news day, eh?

I just love the fact that they don't plan on killing half their bandwidth in a cost-cutting move, like some websites I visit *cough*
