  5. Get the best of both worlds... on Tackling Open-Source Book Projects? · · Score: 5, Informative

Bruce Eckel publishes books (like "Thinking in Java") as both a free online book, yet sells the printed copy. What he does is publishes the book like normal, but also makes them available for free on his webpage. So if you ever need it to reference, you can jump online to read it. And to support him, most people buy a copy of his book. Its the best of both worlds.

Another nice advantage is he has books that he isn't finished with available online ("Thinking in Patterns" is one of his), where people can read it and give him feedback before he takes it to the press... Check grammar, find things that are easier to reword, play around with his example code, etc... Its almost like an open source project right there. And he makes money on his books (cause, any java coder that has read "Thinking in Java" owns a copy. Its like a Bible for Java).

This may be a technique you may consider...

What I'm really interested in is how 'trolling' will affect the future cultures.

Because people can hide behind usernames (or anonymity) they are usually more forward and aren't afraid to start a large fight. How will this affect future generations? Will it make it more violent? Or, maybe, the personal (physical) confrontation will cause more shyness and less violence.

Its interesting how we blow off the 'troll phenomenon' on the internet (although, they tend to remind us they are there with their goatse ascii art), but it may cause a major change in society!

Don't do anything too hairy with the Win2K boxes (to get it so you don't need to worry about crashes), but MS makes good GUI's. Its easier to understand point-and-click with people that don't know how to use a mouse, than command line execution in a shell window.

Sure, you can spend mucho time getting SuSE (or GNOME) to have nothing but point and click, but I ask one question:
What do you have more of (or, more freedom of)?:
Time to setup the systems, or
    Money to buy the systems?

  17. Re:The first Slashdot troll post investigation on Oracle Breakable After All · · Score: -1, Offtopic
    • 1. Duh. Of course more moderator points are spent modding people down. Thats because there are unfortunately more trolls and crapflooders than there are insightful posts.[...snip...]

This isn't the solution to the problem. If there are more trolls & crapflooders than insightful posts, its not just a coincidence. Obviously, something has gone wrong with slashdot (perhaps the choice of articles? Perhaps something else).
But adding aggressive moderation and (corruptible) absolute rule is only making the problem WORSE. More people are becoming trolls and crapflooders because of it.

    2. Logged in people are modded down faster than anonymous cowards. You really mean to say that logged in trolls are modded down than anonymous trolls, right?

Anonymous needs to be looked at first. Logged in trolls usually get -1 fast, so anonymous needs to be checked first (plus, when people have karma and want to troll, they click the infamous "post anonymously" button).

    3. Once you have a karma of -4 or -5, your posts have a score of -1 by default. Who cares? Once a post is -1, it can't be modded any lower, so why would someone bother modding it down even further. I'm not sure what point you are trying to make here, but you make no sense.

When someone logs in here first, they may not know the etiquette of slashdot posting, and after 1 (yes, just ONE) down moderation, they auto-post at 0. Its hard to recover from something like that.

    4. Substituting Windows for BSD to make a Windows is Dying post is not clever. The only people who would think the sex with goats post is funny are the trolls themselves. But again, subjective.

Just try and bash windows. Make it semi-on topic. You'll gain all the karma you want

    5. Now this is really funny. You are going back to a poll which took place before there even was moderation. How could people even know they didn't want what is here today?(hint: it wasn't even an option).

True, but this is a poll that needs to be redone to see what the community wants now.
