    CROSSFIT is awesome.

It's just a simple (ha!) 20-30 minute workout a day.

In the last six months I've gone from 1.5 to 13 pull ups, from 210 to 285 deadlift, and other similiar gains.

Most of all, I feel better, I have more energy during the day, I sleep more soundly, and even though I work out by myself in a home gym, I feel connected to the crossfit community through the message boards.

The workouts will hurt you, but you'll get an amazing sense of accomplishment.

I doubt that's why it's up there on google (it's number TWO on google, and nowhere to be found on Yahoo).

The site has a google page rank of 4. A page rank of 4 and good Search Engine Optimization is all it takes to kick a**. Now, if you had a page rank of 1 or 2 and you still got to the top of the listings, I'd be very interested.

Keyword density certainly helps, but having OTHER sites link to yours (giving you the high page rank) is what helps the most.

As for the Search Engine Optimization on that site, it's certainly in the 'grey' area, if not altogether in the 'black.' If google asks, you'd be hard pressed to explain away the site actions.

Also, linking to the site in your post would have increased the page rank - having a 5-score comment (I think everything above 3 is indexed by google) means that as far as google is concerned, slashdot (a site with a page rank of f'ing NINE) is linking to YOU. That'll bump you up a lot if you post enough with your sought-after key words as the text in your link.

One thing to consider is the friction MS would have to FIGHT to be allowed to release its source code. The US government uses Windows almost exclusively, because of 1) the top brass are more familiar with it, and 2) buying into the whole "closed source is more secure" mucky-muck.

Should MS talk about releasing the kernel, there would be generals and politicians in an uproar, and would be screaming 'No, no! National Security!"

It would take a lot of explaining to convince them that malignant hackers couldn't exploit a new hole and tunnel in to mess up a batallion's paychecks.

The thing is, at any given moment, you have about 600,000 users connected to the Morpheus network. And they were averaging about a million downloads a week.

So, whatever protocol Morpheus decides to use will suddenly have millions of people on it.

I like the gnutella network, and in fact I really like how in accessing it, Morpheus is using its 'supernode' technology (only computers that meet certain speed/connection requirements become nodes). Searches are faster, because you're not waiting on someone with a 56k dialup to process your search request before he passes it on. (by the way, I hear that BearShare is going to, or has already started, implementing this same idea to help stabalize the gnutella network)

But my main point is this: whatever network Morpheus decides to use, be it fast track, gnutella, something else, or a combination, there will instantly be a large amount of shared files on said network.

So, in my interest of finding the maximum number of DivX movies possible, I think I'll probably stick with Morpheus for the time being.

I do hate the damn popus, though.

  11. Re:How much is a full-page ad... on Amazon: Linux Saved Us Millions · · Score: 1
This is a fabulous idea. Although it will cost a bundle ($162,557.28 was quoted) This kind of money certainly exists within the Linux community. We are the developers, programmers, etc. that are the backbone of Linux.

Now, if this full page ad should come to fruition, the resulting MS "pay no attention to the OS behind the curtain" backlash and subsequent press releases would cripple the software giant in ways that would be EXTREMELY satisfying to watch.

But think of the implications. As far as I know, this sort of thing has never been done before. By which I mean that you don't see ads for linux put out by the parent company, simply because there is no parent company. There is no $multi-million PR budget to put out sappy commercials - everything that anyone has ever heard about linux is simply word-of-mouth. It's amazing that all the press coverage of linux is due 100% to it's own merits, and nothing else. So, if we started a fund to collect donations toward putting out this ad, that IN ITSELF would be newsworthy. It would take quite a while to gather the cash, but the news stories and desired effect would start way before the acutal ad comes out.

Then again, with all the worthwile charities out there right now, maybe this idea of donating for an ad might not fly. But we could change the world! Imagine a day when 50% or more of businesses use Linux....

Fantastic Ideas, and I believe that the $1 mental cut-off would work on the consumer's end. However, this $1 would in all likelihood be paid by credit card, in which case the credit card industry takes 25 - 35 cents plus 2.5% of the transaction. The outcome is for a $1 transaction the receiving party only gets about 68 cents. People still might pay $2 for the same services, however, in which case the artist/online distributor gets $1.65 to go crazy with.
