I disagree, cross platform is indeed important since we are not just talking in terms of PC OS here. Only xbox360 market is DX driven and the others tend to be opengl. In fact the very reason MS released the xbox (ver 1) and started down the path Carmack said they would (and was one of the few who could really make a difference who opposed MS moves early on in a very vocal manner and put his money where his mouth was by proving how opengl was indeed just as good).

Instead the guy pulled a knife, subsequently had it taken off him and stabbed through the shoulder PAST the hilt. Unfortunately I know or am related to a fair few people like that and am definitely not that way myself but know pissing them off usually leads to more hurt. Sure if you have the skills go ahead but generally the less aggressive types usually get the floor wiped with them and I've had enough knives pulled on me for jack shit to know my method works as I have fewer scars than incidents where thats happened.

Nah doesn't always work like that although it may in some cases for the most part from what I've seen it has the opposite effect. It makes it worse since if people assume the other person may be armed etc it can make attackers more aggressive and unreasonable, second unless people have higher skills in using said weapons it's just more likely to make people more angry and pissed off than before some granny pulled a blade on unsuspecting mugger who'll then get more unreasonable. The amount of people who pull knives only to get them used on them is known to be pretty high. Friend of mine did a few years for stabbing a bloke in the shoulder with a blade he pulled on him, before the knife came into play he was simply just going to hit him (a long story that starts with heroin and ends in prison haha).

Too many FOSS projects suffer from groups failing to pool resources for no (good) reason I can see. I've noticed it a lot in terms of photo and graphics design programmes. If people got together and combined forces then it would be win win IMO since the product would become more successful and refined for it and due to that stand its ground more effectively against the real opposition (ie. running in native windows environment). So why not unless you're somehow trying to compete against fellow projects with similar goals and thereby giving MS an easier ride than if skills were combined. Cedega I never thought much of since wine I generally found better and free so I didn't use it for long (admittedly was some time back). Other bonus point for wine for me is using single application in place of 2 since I use wine for none game stuff too.

hate to piss on some peoples little parade but the old model of essential aminos is out of date. Sure it was what I was taught in uni (biochem degree but that was 14 years ago) but friends who are lecturers have told me since it's been somewhat rethought and many don't believe it's what they originally made out. No ref on that since I couldn't be arsed looking further TBH since it isn't of much interest to me personally. Even in the old model which I do remember meat ranked pretty poor in the protein scales, and I'm talking about scales produced by meat eating biochemists. Funny enough the closest thing to egg (the top reference, specifically cooked egg white since uncooked is less bioavail and lowers score) is actually quorn (the raw fungal hyphae not the finished product. Problem I seem to remember my lecturer mentioning was the RNA content was high but they blitzed it with UV to solve that issue. Unsure how much this has changed these days but I remember that little gem of a module made all the "pro meat" and "soya has everything you need" veggies STFU leaving those of us who keep our dietary choice personal free to get on with out lives without preaching. For the record I am vegetarian but whether others chose to eat meat is their choice, I'll even cook it for friends and family since they cook vegetarian stuff for me. May seem hypocritical but my choice is my personal choice and I have no intention to force it on others. Before the old nugget plenty of animals die in vegan food production comes up, whilst this is true people overlook the fact death toll is higher for meat since animals don't photosynthesize last I checked so the same is ture of the production of their fodder and energy waste is higher so it's true point but invalid one for the purpose of pro meat argument as it actually weighs in against the pro corwd who often state it seeming to have little understanding of consequential reasoning.

  10. misleading and meaningless on IBM Makes a Super Memory Breakthrough · · Score: 1

"run on single battery" is misleading as they don't specify cell chemistry or density. It could be an industrial style cell with ultra high density but many will probably think in terms of a single commonly available commercial cell like alkaline primaries or something. Even then they may mean pack of cells since many act like mobile phones, cameras, flashlights, laptops and so on run off a single Li cell when in fact those packs are comprised of multiple single cells of some kind of rechargable Li chemistry (such as ion, LiFe, poly, LiCo and so on). The other thing is even if it was off a single cell (eg. small but high capacity regular commecial cell such as an 18650) then we're talking about running the memory alone and plenty of present day appliances manage to run memory off such small amounts of power too. Even if we compare it to regular comp memory which has low power requirement (mine uses 2.5v) and doesn't draw that many amps really it isn't much different although it's not quite few weeks on single cell level admittedly, under load at least.

  11. single is where the money is on Single-Player Game Model 'Finished,' Says EA Exec · · Score: 1

Even since multiplayer stuff starting getting bigger it has never been the driving force behind real games I've found. All the really involving ones story wise, gameplay wise or genre breaking types have been single player exclusively or with 1P as focs and a tacked on MP as afterthought. For example Morrowind was awesome and certainly didn't suffer from lack of multiplayer. In fact it flowed well due to it and multi would have wrecked the experience somewhat. Compare neverwinter nights pure SP compared to doing the same SP campaign coop and unless it was a small group of folks you knew it was always less involving and crumbier gameplay from those deadweights who always let you down to those who deliberately ruined play and that is BEFORE connection and ISP complications and price. Even stuff with tacked on multi was much better in 1P alone such as flashpoint. SP was very involving particularly the first and resistance campaign (red hammer was still good) and although I liked it online it was never close to the 1P experience. It was one of the few to not appeal to the kids so not as much childishness and swearing needlessly as other games attract so was more 20 to 30 somethings like myself at the time but still lacked. Single doesn't date as quick either, you're not dependent of others to be able to play either which makes big difference especially with older stuff. All developments and experience seems heavily weighted to single player and those where multi is good experience it is often because of a good single player mode as multi is coop focused single player campaign coop such as ghost recon, raven shield, neverwinter etc and when you pick a real life friend or relative to play along side. IMHO the big multi only experience bores me quickly and is shallow, such large numbers of strangers is too many variables to ensure a good deep gameplay experience. Still EA is one of the worst for quick buck cash cow flavour of the month releases and designing a good 1P game takes something EA have never really had (save MOHAA but then the team left and formed infineon ward).

I'm in the UK and online prices are good enough if you shop around and steer clear of fleabay. For big orders and especially if need decent components I tend to use digikey but shipping and so on mounts up to make it not worth it for bits and bobs. Mauser have some alright stuff too along with other stores but again they are better for bulk orders. For small bits I use either my local shop (independent owned) or from places with regular p&p and low price branded stuff that have no minimum order, that way I might be paying an extra £2 compared to if I'd ordered the same stuff in a bulk order but if I only want £5 of bits then paying £50 to make a big order worth while isn't really worth it. Maplin however are utter sh*te when it comes to quality and their prices are just bloody silly. Even rapid online have better quality cheaper and they are far from the best place.

Here in the UK I only buy my chilli from independent middle eastern and asian stores since nagas and habaneros are cheaper and they do more chilli varieties in my local ones and compared to the rubbish tesco sell are much much hotter. I've tried packets and packets of the dorset naga variety tesco sell and they are much weaker then decent bonnets and cost way over the odds at nearly £1 for 2 or 3 (I can get about 12 or so for that price but hotter nicer flavour ones). Now pure capsaicin is another matter. A friend of mine I studied with who also loves hot food tried some that was in the lab and his reaction convinced me it was a bad.......... very bad........... idea. Out of the ones who do steal what they would have bough many do end up buying it and simply use the free copy as evaluation. I don't tend to steal music since if it's not worth buying I don't think it's worth my time listening to really. Some artists I have downloaded to see if I considered it a worthy purchase since I can't return jack shit to an actual store counter due to "piracy" the way I used to be able to hence driving me the piracy route. It seems to many to be a black and white issue, people, all my friends and family included, tend toward either having no privacy concerns what so ever and completely devaluing privacy or going to the extreme of verging on paranoid about their details. I am not overly concerned about such things myself, but this doesn't mean I have no concerns. I don't use social networking sites of any kind and don't throw many of my details from name and dob to place of residence around unintentionally and only use when needed. Privacy should be a concern though, I have nothing to hide but that doesn't mean I don't value privacy despite invasions of it would just turn up I'm a pretty regular boring person. In fact with harsh honesty I'm probably statistically more interesting and unique in that I'm more boring than your average person. I'd agree there is little complete privacy left where internet and shared data is concerned. Even if you never use a computer and work for cash in hand alone there is still medical records, police and other records etc etc. Short of opting out of the system completely and not functioning in regular society you can't avoid it and becoming invisible in that way actually brings attention that would be deemed more sinister by many that hiding in plain sight would avoid. I do use google for some things including 2 gmail accounts but the extent of my use and manner in which I use it just means it works for me and the info I've shared in the process makes it worth it for me I feel. I am not so black and white and sit more in the middle, there should be educated choice though and not blantant disregard for what details we share with the world. For the record I do use 2 gmail accounts for some (not all) things and shop online etc etc but adblock and script blocking is common sense to me since evn though I have nothing to hide I don't see any reason of value to me why I should unwittingly share my details with everyone.
