Indeed, I just pointed this out to a girl I met the other day. She has a degree in sociology and while studying her thesis centered around media's impact on our culture. She had no idea the MPAA ratings were completely self-imposed.

I bought a used MacBook black off a kid on CL a month ago for 500. It was about 6 months old and in new condition. Why so cheap? He had gotten a work laptop and only used the MacBook on and off. Then stopped altogether when he forgot his password.
5 min Google search and another 5 running through some steps, I had reset the root and all local account pwds from the console (his g/f is pretty hot).
If you're that worried, I'd suggest using something like a TrueCrypt container with a seperate password to dump important things you keep on your laptop.
Anyway, yeah I coulda wiped it too and been set, but I was curious to see if it could be done. I sold it a few days ago for 900:)
Was language discovered or invented? What you scribble on paper in either realm of language or math are inventions of man to facilitate the passing of ideas/discoveries. This method of description is the invention.
Too paraphrase some Buddhist thoughts on the idea of value, the only value anything has is that which we create for it. Nothing has intrinsic value until individuals express value for it.
Applied to math, you could say mathematics is a series of definitions we've created to describe an observed phenomenon or hypothesize the existence of an as yet unobserved phenomenon.
But what the hell do I know? I'm neither a philosopher or a mathematician.
Ubuntu does the same two things to me. Gnome windows will fade out for no reason for a while (with Compiz on) or not respond without it, then a min later work fine. This is on my dual-core desktop with an nVidia 7900 card, 2GB high end RAM and a 10k HDD
And occasionally Nautilus will refuse to show me the contents of even the root filesystem as well as other mounted drives.
Don't get me wrong, I use Linux all day at work and only use XP at home for games. Just saying
Are we going to find life on other planets but discover that high intelligence is rare? By high intelligence, you're talking about the dolphins right??
I have a Dreamcast too. What it does require is a lot more elbow grease to put together a disk that works. Or, I can dump everything to the 200GB drive in my Xbox and not fumble with a bunch of CD-R's
Agreed. We just got bit by that shit upgrading to Viz Studio 2008. Some functions in a library became deprecated and things in new builds were not working. On the plus side, it was stuff that had been built in for internal dev purposes, but apparently they don't have access to change the library. Instead certain devs get to redo their stuff.
I can see the point that a license alone should not dictate the tools used, however on the flipside, is there really a reason NOT to use an open language? C/C++, Python, Ruby, Perl, (now) Java, etc etc etc... It's not like these languages are fresh from the lab. Each is a bit more than "time tested".
I have a feeling it's more about getting people that don't know any better to switch over to a new platform than how much it costs them to run that "old" one.
I am putting together puppet to manage our Debian boxes. It works with Linux and Mac OSX (according to the site, we don't have any Mac OSX machines for me to test the reality)
1.) Explain why their pda will no longer sync with their calendar, mail client, or transfer files PDA? You mean those things that no one uses anymore? I thought that's what cellphones were for. And you can't even sync those to Windows most of the time.
2.) Explain why they can't just plugin more than two monitors and just get it to display without editing config files Buy a 24"+ monitor. Problem solved!
3.) Explain why they can't use that one application they NEED for work that only runs on Windows. Because the developer/vendor of that software has little interest in providing their product to as many people as possible.
4.) Explain why they can't play [latest high end game] All the latest high end games work fine on my X360/PS3
5.) Explain why [latest high end hardware] doesn't work in Linux at all. See #3. However my 7900GS nVidia card worked much, much better than "at all" under Linux when it first came out.
6.) Explain why their cheap no name printer doesn't work with linux out of the box. There are no name printer companies out there? All I see are HP, Epson, Lexmark, Canon and maybe Brother. All makers of which I've gotten to work out of the box on Ubuntu.
7.) Explain why the pptp linux client is such a pain in the ass to use. I think this is a bit above even the slightly above average Windows users needs. Everytime I've used PPTP anyway it's been a pretty piss poor experience. Probably best we keep newbies away so as not to tarnish their first impression.
It occurs to me that our economy may be in a bit better shape if, you know, we paid less in taxes and had that money spend on frivolous shit. I suppose either way it ends up in some fat cats pockets (via government contracts or purchase of goods, what's the diff how they get it, so long as they get it!)

Crazy.
What I am disillusioned with are ignorant users, incompetent management, and the "politics" of business

I think this works it down to a pretty simple formula.

They got it out before EA could really make moves to take them over and quickly cash in on others hard work.
Kiss my ass EA.

Good gravy, man. Hopefully English isn't your first language or you're 8. Otherwise that was just severely painful.

I solved my need for pick and play gaming with a modded Xbox. ROMs, MAME and it makes a decent media streaming device.

Well said. Couldn't agree more!

So essentially customs is allowed to shit all over the 5th Amendment?
Way to totally deflate an opportunity for unfounded, emotionally driven whining by a buncha lifeless nerds with facts. Now what are we going to do?
Jerk.
Oh that's BS. That's like saying I am culpable for giving a convicted armed robber a gun and he went and robbed someon...
Wait. Fuck.

Microsoft thought about this. In the latest update, they've decided that to improve security, they'll disable all input devices on your computer.
By making a users computer useless, the goal is to get fewer people using computers, thereby reducing security problems.
Best comments ever
