Part of me feels like that even at this early stage the idea at MS is to add even more whiz bang bloat to Windows Next by "taking advantage of dual-core chips." Let the applications take advantage of them and the OS be a translator.
once moms and dads start finding that the 49.99 they just plunked down for johnny (or even lil jill) can't be played on their new 2006 Windows XP Dell without spending another couple hundred on Vista come late 2007.
Additionally when it comes to PC games, if you're worried about cramming four people around a monitor then you're not playing the right game. PC games have been online for over a decade. Any developer, indie or otherwise, that decides to only offer up 4 player multiplay on a PC that requires four people to cram around a monitor probably SHOULD follow the advice of the article. They obviously are not developing to the strenghts of the platform and lare doomed to failure.
Jesus man, they were testing the theory of relativity for flaws, they just asked a buncha people some questions and these were the results.
I myself buy Nintendo consoles first, have owned at least one of each Gameboy iteration, and even have a couple T's in my closet that have the classic Nintendo logo on them. I don't like Smallville and only moderately enjoy the quirkiness in Gorillaz tunes.
Hypothesis busted. It isn't a big damn deal.
Whenever you read an article like this just remember to add "Of those surveyed, we found..."
Especially at the 20 bucks a pop method that I keep hearing rumored Valve will use. Particularly when it will just amount to a few linear shooter levels.
Meanwhile I continue to play Gal Civ II over and over with all the different outcomes for 29.99. Or even Civ IV for 50 bucks is a better investment.
I don't think this is a full update of all the games shown. The numbers for say SWG only go on the chart as being through July of last year. Read the news blurb on the main site, it says this is a partial update with data through Jan '06 and he is working on a completely new release of stats to be out soon. (hopefully)
you're missing the point. the best part about these sort of projects is that you don't NEED a dozen devices plugged in to play all these games. in a way it's utilitarian and resourceful. it's why i put a chip in my xbox so i can just switch it on and not have to mess with all the controller cables, power cables and switchin around my a/v config just to play a game. i keep all the legacy systems and games in a closet that isn't used anyway and just play games without the fuss. i have even put some gameboy games on there so i can leave it in my bag and don't have to pack it up whenever i want to take it with me.
It makes sense on paper, but SOE f'd it up. I hated crafting because the it worked. I'm talking about the UI and the actions involved. The act of playing that role was so screwed up and such a time sink. However, on paper, having the ability to craft all of these items and have them be more than just a decoration for the house (ie., useful) is a good idea.
It was the same with combat. The ideas that were there at launch were interesting, but executed so poorly. People say that that pre-cu combat was more fun than CU or NGE (some would say more fun than those combined). But clicking actions to queue them in an unlimited box is mindless.
The skill system was way better than now, but there was way too many professions and skills. Particularly when it came to melee. But in general, it felt like there was so many skills I wouldn't have been surpris
SOE's biggest problem is implementation. Their games do have interesting ideas peppered through out, but it's like their development teams either don't get the time necessary (my first choice), or don't have the skill, to build them into intuitive features.
I don't really think it is that big of a deal. to my understanding the DS doesn't use any region encoding so if you want one that badly, buy one from lik-sang when they drop in Japan
I keep seeing these comments, but even if this thing did happen (hahaha), @ 750 a pop, what you are saying is your company would be too cheap to run more than one for redundancy?
yes but WoW is designed with long term playability in mind. do you think someone is going to pay a monthly sub to play madden 07 which they will then trade in? or worse (for sony), play on xbox for the one year fee? and with WoW you buy one box. if sony does monthly, they expect people to buy 3-4 games a month plus their sub? uh, no, sorry. with WoW you spend 50 once and 15/month. not 50 (or 60 if next gen prices average that) dollars every time a diff. title comes out plus the subscription fee.
For keeping me safe from seeing a pair of breasts. Because you aren't very good at keeping me safe from much else.
Seriously, it shouldn't be the government's job to keep kids away from porn. It should be their fucking parent's job. So China's argument is still BS to me.
"Google's acts of "driving people to its site" do nothing for Google's bottom line. Google, like Yahoo!, is an advertising company..."
You contradicted yourself. Driving people to their site is how Google generates advertising revenue (maybe not all of it, but enough to impact thier "bottom line"). You didn't think all those ads on the right of your search results were free, did you?
Is it me or does it seem that when it comes to Google, there is a stigma that every service they roll out should be awesome and immediately utilized - oh but wait - they can store my data for 30 days? Hrm, I don't know. It is Google, but that doesn't sit right. But it is Google. Mm, Google.
For real, just don't flippin' use it, viola, no more concerns over the privacy of your data. (At least with Google.)
This is slightly off topic, if this guys computer policy said "Thou shalt no play solitaire at work." then Oops for him. But this partly made me think of how things always seem to work at companies I have worked for
Smokers usually take 3-4 or more breaks a day for a cigarette and no one ever complained. I never understood how when I would take a quick break to check personal e-mail, this was any different than some stinky bastard standing out in the snow or rain, spending at least 30 minutes a day total smoking. When did they earn special privilege for essentially slacking off?
The best part is is that this story is about a government employee being canned for playing a game at work. Two things come to mind: If you don't want them playing it don't give them access and 2) Like even the mayor himself hasn't screwed up on the job, probably with greater impact. It's funny how grunts in government jobs tend to be made examples of when their bosses may very well be even bigger screw ups.
There are a lot of outlets for parents to find out about the games they buy their kids. However, as usual, the media and "family values" groups are looking for sound bites and blaming the industry itself. Far more useful ones than a sticker/label on the box.
There is no reasonable way the ESRB could have known that the "Hot Coffee" content was there. This is mostly Rockstar's fault for A) Lying about it in the first place B) Leaving it there to easily be uncovered.
But most of all it's the fault of people who are out to help protect everyone else, for keeping this alive. FUCK OFF. I don't see things the same way you do and neither do millions of other people (if not billions), just fuck off, ok? Let people control themselves and stop trying to tell society how it needs to behave in order to appear, at best, that we are a civilized people.
Millions die from cureable disease, hunger, and from having to drink from water sources tainted by billion dollar companies that spew shit all over us, how the hell can this be the most important thing that we should be worrying about?
Personally I would like Blizzard to silence all groups and make people actually play the game and a role they don't play in life. Like another poster said, I play to escape reality (I don't play WoW anymore, but still). I don't want some turd on his soapbox shouting about the return of The J Man. Why do people have to drag their lives into everything. I don't want to associate with crusaders in the game, I want to be involved in a different reality. Kick them all out is what I say.

Man I can't wait until 2261 when they change Uranus's name in order to put an end to stupid joke's like that.

But for us poor bastards the eBay prices of the G4 Mini's now makes them much more palatable for those that just want one to play around with

Or until online distribution supercedes the need for Wal*Mart

Time to break down and buy a new NEC dvd writer before they are jacked up the ass with DRM restrictions
An all day battery life while sitting on your counter top in suspend mode.
Wait wait, how did he win? The Super Bowl was broadcast on ABC this year. Shouldn't that be "Disney Corp"?
I don't really think it is that big of a deal. to my understanding the DS doesn't use any region encoding so if you want one that badly, buy one from lik-sang when they drop in Japan

"... Lucasarts will ...pull the plug entirely rather than let the brand get diluted by a bad player experience."
Have you seen Episode I? Yeah, he made TWO more! There is no concept of "pull the plug" to avoid a bad user experience.
