You (pi radians) think you're fighting against content control.
No I don't. My post was saying that it is much better to try to fight such actions than to roll over and accept them (in this case, turning off the TV and walking away). If you think that they will stop at just TV, you just being ignorant.
You're getting duped if you think you have the freedom to watch a show without ads. You're accepting a straw-man definition of "freedom" so you'll keep watching what they want.
This has nothing to do with me wanting to record a show and watching it later. I am very much aware what kind of corporate crap they put out on TV. But for this thread, it's neither here nor there.
And don't patronize me please. I will once again say that the only reason I posted was to say that just ignoring the problem won't stop it. Once "they" control what you can't record on TV, it'll move to other mediums (hell, it already exists on video-tapes, DVD's and CD's).
Just walk away. Wait for the withdrawl to fade, and see if you miss it or not.
Just so you know, I own one TV. It is connected to my DVD player, VCR and PS2. I don't get cable. I don't watch TV when I'm at home.
Next time don't make such blatant assumtions. you'll be wrong more often than not.
So your solution is if you enjoy something and someone comes alaong at tries to capitalize or restrict on your enjoyment, just walk away and do nothing?
Why should anyone give up television? It's great that you're being all "holier-than-thou" about TV, but many people do enjoy it.
If that were the case, I'm assuming you don't listen to music anymore, watch movies anymore, play video games and surf the intern--- wait a second! Obviously you feel that content control is only applicable on things you don't care for.
This kind of action should not be ignored. Every medium that "they" restrict will just lead to more power for "them". Selling your TV doesn't solve the problem, it just gives "them" the go-ahead to do this to something else.
The only issues I have are the poor fools (myself included) that bought MacOS X beta (~$40), then MacOS X (~$130) then the 10.1 upgrade (~$10 shipping) and now 10.2 is a kick in the teeth.
Umm, hate to tell you this, but there WAS a discount for everyone who bought the Beta then had to get the first version. Just because you missed you chance (due to ignorance or just plain laziness) doesn't mean Apple ripped you off.
No, it is only for one user license. But the OS doesn't check for serial numbers or anything, so you'll be fine (but crooked) ifyou just buy one and install it on both computers.
So what if your $5 lemonade is awful? It gets sour quickly and has a terrible aftertaste. A few times you buy this lemonade and the glass you got it in has a hole in it and your lemonade spills out. Since this $5 lemonade company has removed all other competition through "hard work" and now demandes that instead of charging for every glass, now you are charged for every sip you take.
Not only that, but in the future this $5 lemonade company won't let you but anything else except for their lemonade in that glass. So your stuck, paying for every sip of lemonade and then being forced to drink more and therefore buying more.
Yeah, that great. Because this lemonade (with that extra sugar that you can't remove from it) has given you cavities. And since you live in a non-socialist country that allowed the lemonade maker to thrive no matter how corrupt their practices are they have destroyed all other alternatives. By now they also own the water stand and are probably your dentist.
So thumbs up to you dude. Great insight on it all.

I just bought the unlock license for QT 5 Pro a few weeks ago.
It would have paid off to do a little research. Since the QT6 Public Preview release like a month ago it's been a well known fact that you would have to buy a new license for QT6Pro.
It's too bad you didn't, but luckily it's not a HUGE cost, just a pain.

Well, if I were you I'd run out and by a lottery ticket.
ME crashes all the time on my buddies computer, you could get it to do it on command. We finally upgraded it to XP and it doesn't crash.... as often (now and then it likes to just stop responding, and it seems to delete a couple DLLs every little while).
But like my dad always says, if your machine isn't crashing, you're not working hard enough.
Ha ha ha, check out this guy! He uses REDHAT!!!! Ha ha ha ha ha. Get a real distro! Sucka dj!
But with all seriousness (is that even a word?) it is quite true. There is far too much "civil war" between users and their differring distros. People need to grow up and realize that everyone is right, with the exception of all of those Mandrake users. It's just so stupid. Oh, and I can't stand the arrogant Slackwarers. Oh and Mac OS X isn't Unix. So quit pretending you hippie freaks!
AAPL is always saying things to the effect of "we can't tell you what is is, but prepare to be blown away" and "it'll be way beyond anything the rumor sites are reporting"
If by "always" you mean once, then you're right. Usually Apple stays quiet. They never say anything. Then last year when MWNY2001 was closing in people had HUGE expectations (read: G5) and when nothing was announced there was HUGE disapointment (read: booing Steve). 6 months later MYSF2002 was coming up, Apple planted rumors about iWalk, then hyped up the show to beat every rumor site. They released a G4 LCD-iMac. No one saw it coming (until Time Canada pbished their story on it).
So Apple's strategy has been changing. No one knows what's going to happen in a week, but mark my words, Apple is on the ball will rumors.
It being effectively shackled by a dumbed down user interface that cannot be easily[1] disabled or swapped out for another would probably be the biggest point against it.
typing in >console then logging into the system and typing startx.(assuming you have installed XFree86, which was just as easy to do on my mac as my thinkpad.)
It is not difficult.
Only their very latest PowerBooks include a built in AirPort interface card.
Nope. On the 800MHz version it is pre-installed. That's all.
My PowerBook gets about 2.5 - 3 hours
The iBooks really do get amazing battery life. Power books are powering a screen that's much larger and a processor that's much more power hungry. The iBooks really do kick ass in reality.
Ummm, so thats it for my minor corrections. The rest looks right to me. =)
As a side note, Apple certainly does some things differently. Compared to some PC companies it is a nice change, but the term innovative is used far too often.
What investment? The one from five years ago, which Microsoft no longer has? Apple (last month actually, is when the agreement ended) is once again free from MS's "grip".
Apple has already shown what they think of DRM. They put stickers on their MP3 players not to steal music. They will always do as little as possible.
If I click on the unsubscibe link, my email comes back undeliverable 75% of the time, and I seem to get more spam each day!
Ahhh! That's the worst thing to do. All of the ones that DON'T come back undeliverable now know your email address is being checked and read. Not only are you telling them to send out more stuff to you, but they can sell your address to others for a greater amount of money. Never ever ask to unsubscribe. It's better to just right a filter that deletes it immediately.
PS2 is like you'll have to buy these $50 games and then pay $10 to each of the Publishers for the right to play on their network! No thanks to that, 3 games = $150, $10/month * 3 * 12 months = $360/yr, $150 + $360 = $510/yr just to play 3 games on the PS2.
Where did you come up with that? I am sure for some games it is true, but not all. Example: Tony Hawk 3. It only costs the price of the modem and a broadband access to play online (a one time purchase). Most games will probably be like this.
So in closing... just stop being ignorant... I'm tired of ignorance on Slashdot, are we a community of well educated tech people or are we a community of ignorant bafoons that have nothing better to do at work then spread FUD.
Well then here's an idea. You stop being so ignorant first, and the rest of us will follow suit.
It really should be an option to have that disabled though. The Quicktime Pro package is not really needed by most general users, and the annoying pop-up is just that, annoying.
Will Apple MPEG-4 interoperate with other MPEG-4 technologies?
The MPEG-4 specification is large and contains provisions for many technologies. However, any.mp4 file containing compliant MPEG-4 video and AAC audio should interoperate with QuickTime 6. If you find any interoperability issues please let us know.
Other technologies that report to be MPEG-4 compliant, yet are not contained in an.mp4 file, will not interoperate with QuickTime 6 or other MPEG-4 players. Divx and MPEG-4 from Microsoft are common examples.
Well, there you kinda of have it, no. Although I heard that DivX5 will be completely compatible. But I don't know for sure.
Apple decided to actually follow standards, and not just jump on the "buzzword bandwagon" and do their own thing. Only time will tell if it pays off.
Mainstream "image" is very different than you think. Nobody thinks Linux sold out. The average person thinks Linux is some simple computer company that they don't need to know about.
Story time: I had the same perseption you had. I figured everyone had some concept as to what Linux really was. But after talking to some people (a little less computer literate than my pet dogs) whom I don't usually hang out with I was shocked. I was trying to explain whats up with big business in the tech sector (namely Microsoft and AOL) and they just wouldn't believe that you can get software for free (and not pirated). I quote "No one is making it for free. Linux would go out of business if they just let anyone use their stuff."
Forget IBM, Dell, HP or Apple. There is still a misconception about what Linux is. That is STILL the first hurdle it needs to overcome.
I was about to say the same thing. NetMD players are amazing. Their music quality can range from better than CD (if you're recoding live or via the optical input from a better source) to just as good as MP3, depending on what compression you choose. The media cost under $5 and you can fit 4 full albums on each disc (they are rewritable) Half the size of these MP3 players and the NEVER skip. I skate and listen to music and not once has my music missed a beat.
There is no reason for someone turn pass this technology up.
Interesting that you brought up the term "holy war". I just read a great post over at MacCentral by an individual who goes by the name objectivist. Well worth the read I think.
Just took a look at the ads on Apple's site. All of the interviews focus on people from the waste up, except for the woman who is totally anorexic(Liza Richardson), where the camera operator focuses on her entire body including her pencil thin legs.
How is her body any more camera friendly than the others?
Yeah, I noticed that too. Although I'm not too surprised, I think it was a bit too obvious of a move. But what can you say, thats today's advertising for you.
